Pretty And Lemon
Hard to tell without front on shots to see stomach colour, but you could have anything with that combination. I mean, you have a YF2 sspangle that is split to recessive pied mating with a grey sominant pied opaline. What could come up, *** anything. I am not even sure how to guess here. let me start with these things Chick 1 - grey based, spangle wings, no clear bars on head due to the pied, Chick 2 - YF2 blue based pied - very few markings due to pied nature, yellow has washed thoughout the body, so YF2, but you can see some grey/blue on the rump Any help anyone?

Budgie names
i name my birds after physical characteristics, or even personality traits Macaroni and Cheese are named due to their colour - they are yellow face type II blue based dominant pieds, the look like a mottled creamino with these strange patches of seafoam green and bright blue. Zeus was named as he looked regal and electric. Zeus the Greek god was famous for thowing lightning bolts, so with his electric colour and his looks, it suited. Milly was given to me by a friend, who is a massive bulldogs fan (rugby league team). they wanted to name it Willie after a star player Willie Mason, but I pointed out it was female, so we comprimised on Milly. Humphrey was my first bird, and he was a little strange at times. I named him after Humprhey B Bear. the song goes... "he's a funny old fellow is humphrey" Mel and Kim are identical sisters, so they were named after the identical sisters who were singers in the 80's. Tralia was named after her father, Ozzie. OZ-Tralia - see where I am going. Kau'i means beautiful in Hawaiian and it suits the bird it belongs to. Angel and Sunshine were named after their colours, many of Zues' offspring are/were named with greek names such as Mercury, Aphrodite, Athena, etc. the injured leg burd was the daughter of Zeus, so she was pegasis, also for her peg leg. Nibbler is the sone of Zeus and Milly. Even as a young bird, he was never afraid of me. If I put my hand near him, he would nibble on my fingers, from the time he first started to feather up. Nibbler was the only name for him. Hugo - who knows what Mum was thinking, Sherbert - my sister is responsible for that one, Butternut - term of endearment, princess - same reason as Butternut. Romeo and juliet were named by my sister as they would always sit kissing each other when they were younger. Romeo went on to be a stud, kissing and pleasuring many females. Although his son looks different - Romeo is a sky blue, and his son is cobalt, he has the same attraction for the ladies, and thus is named Romeo Jr. last one is Brewster. Her long name is Punky Brewster. She is a yellow face type II and she is blue and green on her chest. She looks a bit of this and that. There was a tv show in the 80's called Punky Brewster and it was about this lost kid who came to live with this old caring guy. The kid wore all different colours and looked a shambles. My Brewster was found by others and then came to live with me. Kind of the same story. I am even the old dude - (Laughing out loud). So there you have it. Colours, personality, parents, even how they come to me influence their names.

Nest Box Material Y/n?
If you add the nesting material at the moment, yes, she may well throw it out. As the young begin to hatch, add it again. She will become preoccupied with the chicks, so she will not throw it out. She will not abandon the chicks, well, not due to the nesting material anyway. The sand/bird paper sounds kind of tough for a young bird that cannot yet left its bare skinned body off the ground. i use wood shavings. they soaks up poo and moisture. works for me. And yes, my hens threw that all out initially as well.

Budgie Type?
I am no expert, but I say he is a grey spangle. His wings have poor markings, but they are there. Now, if they are brown as you say, he could be a grey cinnamon spangle who is poorly marked.

How Much Do Avian Vets Cost?
Hey there, I took my sick birds to an avian vet at Austral. It is out bringelly way. You can look up the phone number there. they were great. All up it cost me $75. That was for the intial consultation, they took her overnight, but a splint on her leg, then there were two follow up visits where they checked on her, and eventually removed the splint. All of them were free of charge. not sure if that was their policy, or for me. I would call them and make an appointment, or even go straight there.

Could I Get Yellow-face Babies?
Norm, This clutch were born in June this year, so they are 5 months old. They have all had one moult, so I would think yes, they have their adults colours. Dave

Could I Get Yellow-face Babies?
hang on.based on what you ahve said, the impossible has happened. I have a yellow faced type II bird and he bred with a skye blue cinnamon wing. They produced offspring that were Yellow faced blue type II that looked just like their dad standard skye blues and a cobalt (RIP Mercury - he died suddenly last weekend) and 1 yellow faced blue type 1. The colour did not bleed through on this one. So how is that possible?

Youngun At Vet
Well, Peggy is back in the aviary as of today. She seems to be a bit jittery, but I suppose she is just finding her feet - pardon the pun. she can balance on her damaged leg, and put weight on her foot, she just cannot really bend the foot, it is always outstretched flat, so she has trouble maintaining balance sometimes. She is yet to remember where the food and drink is, so once she does that i will be happier. I cannot see her getting picked on either. When she has been balancing in a good position and another bird has come over trying to get her to move, she has clearly told them no, and has demonstrated she will fight to defend herself. Mel is back to normal. There is a big moult going on in the aviary at the moment, and a few birds have lost their longest tail feathers. First time I saw them i went - oh no, French moult - but really it was just stupid panic on my behalf. All will end up in smaller cages soon, temporarily, and then breeding might begin anew. Green birds are the order of this breeding season I think.

New Budgie - Help With Care
She is a very pretty bird. Any pics of her back - i am assuming she is a spangle based on the white feathers in her tail. her head marking seems very light, so she could be opaline, or is it possible she is a dilute - her blue is not very vibrant (but then there is the whole flash thing). Ultimately, more pics please "protective mum".

My Youngsters
very cute, but I do think you need some bedding in those boxes, something lile wood shavings

Youngun At Vet
that is what I thought. I think the vet was being overcautious. It is a lot more effort moving the little cage in and out everyday. plus the fact that she gets scared when those damn honey eaters swoop down and attach themselves to her cage.

Youngun At Vet
Well, as I said in my last post, Mel is back in the aviary, and she is all good now. Very pleasing results there. Peggy is in a separate cage with her recovering leg. She has been to the vets a couple of times, bandages removed. The leg will never be the same, but she will not lose it. Scar tissue has formed so the leg is kind of locked in place. She can put weight on her foot, but she cannot bend her foot. She needs wider perches. The vet says she might end up an indoor bird. Not overly keen on this idea. I am going toget my fences replaced soon, and so the aviary will need to be temporarily moved to get access to the fences. This means that all my birds will go into a smaller aviary or holding cages. After this fencing happens, and all the birds go back in the aviary, Peggy might get a go in the aviary. I will watch her over a weekend. I think the aviary will suit her more as she can fly around more, and there are a lot of large branches in there she can perch upon.

Youngun At Vet
Well, Peggy has lost her company as Mel has recovered and is now back in the aviary. The first thing she did was fly a little, land on and eat some corn, then some seed. I am pleased. If she flies, then goes straight to the food, she is obviously doing well. Just waiting for he rot meet up with Kim, then all will be good again.

Youngun At Vet
Well Peggy went to the Vet again today. the vet was happy with her progress, but decided not to remove the splint. Another week in traction for young Pegasis and then we are off to the vet again to have the splint removed. By The Way, the vet thinks that she is going to be a he. I thought Pegasis was going to be female. Have a look, what do you think?

Youngun At Vet
She is a beautiful bird, and she does look much better without the fluffed up, dried medicine cheek feathers. I am surprised how big she is when compared to some of the other birds, she is bigger than her most of her siblings. Since her Dad's name is Zeus, I tried to follow the theme of names. I had Mercury, Hercules (who later turned out to be a girl so I changed her name to Aphrodite), and the exception was Nibbler. Then in the next clutch was Apollo, Neptune, Athena and this little one, who i think will be named...........hmmm, not sure. I know, Pegasus, but he was male horse, so I am going to take on Pegasus, change the spelling to make it more female, and go with Pegasis, and she will get called Peggy for short. There we go Kaz, everyone is happy - (Laughing out loud).

Youngun At Vet
Well, my still unnamed budgie with the sore leg is doing well. She is a noisy little thing, so today i took her and Mel's hospital cages out into the sun for a little while and put them within seeing distance of the aviary. A alot of the aviary birds flew over to see who was calling out - it was very sweet. Had to stand out there and protect them as the damn honey-eating native birds swoop at them and scare them. Anyway, I took some photos to show everyone her situation. I think she will be named after one of the gods, not sure which one though. She is a bit messy as she does not like her medicine, which she gets morning and night form a syringe, and so she often closes her beak at the wrong time, thus the messy fuzzy chops This is Mel, who is much better and might be going back to the aviary come this weekend.

Youngun At Vet
Well, she is home from the vets, with her little leg attached to a splint and with masking tape surrounding her leg and her foot. Too early to tell what may happen now. she is on antibiotics she has to get injected into her mouth twice a day. Another vet visit next Wednesday. she is i good spirits, chirping away happily, and trying to jump around the cage, something she has great difficulty doing. She is shredding the newspaper on the bottom of the cage leaving quite a mess. I will try to get some photos over the next 2 days.

well I just rung the vet and she has a splint on - the bird, not the vet!!! Now it is just a case of seeing if the leg was too badly damaged. fingers crossed. She looks a little like this one now, very similar

Youngun At Vet
Last night at about 10pm I heard a lot of flapping coming from the aviary. I went out and checked and all the bids had moved to one end. At the other end was one bird, madly flapping. Upon shining the torch on her, I noticed her leg was pinned between some wire and a metal support beam. God knows how she did it, but she did. I went in the aviary and retrieved her - no easy feat as it had earlier that day been restocked with all new gum tree branches. On bringing her inside, in between her constant biting, I was able to look at her leg. It does not look good. She twisted trying to escape and their was a lot of blood all over the leg, feathers, and on the cage. Her leg was not responding to touch. I put her in a separate cage with a heat lamp on her. She was eating, drinking, chirping, climbing, but could not perch as she had all the "dead weight" of her un-usable leg. I took her to the vets this morning. The vet said she was going to knock her out then put a masking tape splint on her leg after she straightened it. She will also get anti-biotics. If she regained use of her leg, fabulous. I asked what happens if she does not? She said that if the leg is not getting blood flow, then the leg will wither up and fall off. If she survives, she might make it back to the aviary, if not, she might end up my first and only inside bird. I will call in about an hour to see how she is at the vets. Bit sad. Which bird is she? Well, I do not have any recent photos of her yet, but she is out of the second clutch of Zeus and Milly. She is a sky blue young hen. here is an old picture I will keep you all updated.

I Left Without Them
Thanks for the comments. As for the little ones, I do not believe they had French Moult. I am not sure that the little one that I left behind had it. I think he just may have lost his tail feather, or that he was so young he may have no even grown it out fully yet. I just did not want to risk it. As for names, one of my 2 dogs is called Mactaggert, but I always call him macca, so there is no way that one of them could be called Maca. I think Macaroni and Cheese are the names I will go with. Which is which? Who knows - (Laughing out loud). Now, what about the other one? He/She needs a name. Ideas? I think that since the other 2 are related to food, this one should be too. Since he is predominantly yellow, maybe Butter or Butternut (a type of pumpkin), Flora(sounds to feminine if he is a boy). Ideas?

I Left Without Them
okay, below are some pics of the new arrivals. Any ideas for names? my two white pieds are almost twins, so names of people that are always together would work. My early ideas are Bread and Butter, Dolce and Gabbana, Macaroni and Cheese, Salt and Pepper,
