Try again Ralph. When you measure you need three measurements.... Height width and depth. You havent said what the two measurements are and you are missing the third measurement.

More Boy And Girl Questions...
Despite old wives tales told like "Budgies mate for life " etc Budgies are not monogamous. they dont pair for life and they arent "faithful"to each other. Its our perceptions sometimes that make us think this because we see them pair up and are so cute and loving with each other. If budgies paired for life how on earth would us show breeder be able to pair them up for breeding with our selection of partners and swap partners with them at a moments notice ? Good thing they dont pair for life Your budgies are feeling frisky thats all and no amount of you thinking that certain budgies are a paired or bonded couple will make it so long term. They will swap it all around at will

Budgie Breeding
Hi Nathan budgies dont get fatter when they are expecting to lay an egg. You may see an egg sized lump at the vent area under the tail within a day of laying an egg. There should be no nestboxes anywhere that underaged budgies are so be very sure you dont add a nestbox or encourage to breed any budgies that are under 12 months of age.

Mystery's Chicks
That's the whole problem! The dad was supposed to have been cinnamon, but not one of the chicks had plum eyes. So then I began to doubt whether he really was cinnamon. The greywing is a bonus, because even though the hen is greywing, I didn't suspect that the cock would be. Do you suppose that sometimes a plum eyed chick could have such dark eyes that they don't look plum? But then, they'd still have to look cinnamon when they feathered up, wouldn't they? So I'm back to the same conclusion. Either there are no hen chicks, or the father isn't cinnamon. A greywing who is carrying cinnamon will hatch with plum eyes. A top breeder over here had a clutch of chicks from a very expensive bought in greywing and to his horror discovered the resulting chicks hatched with plum eyes meaning the greywing bought in at great expense was split for cinnamon. Chicks looked greywing but upon closer inspection had a hue about the feathering that showed that were cinnamon greywings as well. He was not impressed. Cinnamon isnt something greywing breeders want mixed in with their greywing breeding plans. For you to see cinnamon mixed into the your greywing feathering might be difficult for an untrained eye.

Short Legged Opaline Pied.
Nothing to do with opaline but maybe a doubling up of inherent faults by wrong selection of parents. Budgie is also long flighted. Another fault.

Mystery's Chicks
Terrific to see you have greywings Do you recall if any had plum eyes at hatching ?

My Aviary....start To Finish
Moisture isnt an issue like a basement would have. Floor in there is polished floorboards so I guess sweeping and vacuuming should be easy. No gaps between floorboards and the skirting boards on the wall. Windows each side of the room for crossflow ventilation. My intent is only to use it till it gets too cold for breeding so its only for maybe three months or so. Fingers crossed

Winter Breeding
Most people dont breed through winter as your chance of losing newly hatched chicks is greater. BUT it all depends on your breeding setup. Some breeders have warm breeding rooms

Wanted Budgies
There is always budgies available for sale. Just state the area you live in and see what comes. Also you may want to consider joining a budgie club and that will give you lots of contact with breeder to buy birds from as well as educate you on what to look for in a good budgie.

Girls Ignoring Boys?
If the boys show they are intent on something more serious than the kiss and cuddle routine and the female is not either old enough or in breeding condition then YES she will back off, ignore, or peck at his advances. Too many people get breeding condition wrong. If they are old enough dont wait till the cere is chocolate brown and wrinkly as thats considered too far past breeding condition. Timing for a female to put her down to breed ( if old enough ) is when the cere is starting to brown up but still light to medium brown and certainly not dark and crusty. Dark and crusty is at the stage where its about to peel off and reveal the white blue underneath of a hen not in breeding condition. Also no breeding while moulting. Moulting is not in peak condition, they get cranky too, and you should wait. Sometimes the birds know better than we do about ready or not. This is not to say if any are underaged ( physically and mentally ) and want to breed we should allow them...because its up to us to be their minders and make them wait and make it safer for them and more successful for them and us.

My Aviary....start To Finish
Thanks Amy, for the offers of the pavers, but with no garage up yet we have no space for anything extra, and since I havent yet got a plan for the new birdroom, I will have to play it by ear once its under way. Ken's freaking out about me using a room for a birdroom, mainly because of what he sees as dust going through the house, but I will put some dust seal strips on the door. He also thinks the cats will whinge and sook at the bedroom/birdroom door. here is where the room is bedroom 6 which is 4.3m by 5.2m. I did consider blocking off the hallway door to that room and adding a door from the garage instead and making it a permanent birdroom. If it was up to me I would but Ken isnt all that keen on the idea.

My Aviary....start To Finish
Budgies are jumping out of their skins to breed. I missed pre Christmas breeding due to getting ready for the move to the new house. Our old house sold the first day it had a home open and five lots of people wanted it so that drove the price up which was good As I dont have a breeding room here at the new house I was going to use part of the garage which will be my leadlight workshop, however I have discovered is rampant with mice in there and no real good way to stop them coming in. Also of concern is the fumes from soldering and soldering fluxes that can be harmful to the birds. Much to my husbands dismay I have chosen to use one of the spare bedrooms closest to the garage to make a breeding room. It will be only temporary until we build the garage for the cars and I can then build a new breeding room with whatever space is left between it and the aviaries. So, later today I will move the breeding cabinets in that room and set it up. Catching birds for breeding now.

Hi Steve, you need to look in the FAQ section and read an article called CARE OF BABY BUDGIES IN THE NEST.

Aviary In Progress.....
Did you know that rats climb through trees and shrub and get onto the roof of aviaries ? Your trees and shrubs are close enough. Also the roof of your aviary is close to the wire ( not much if any OVERHANG ) so anything that gets onto the roof will climb around the wire front of your aviary spooking your birds. Suggestions..............time to cut back some trees, and or sheet the roof with lots of overhang so they cant go straight to the wire. Same with hawks and other predatory birds....that will be on your roof and easy access to the wire to get at any birds on or near the wire. Hawks can strike the wire and impale any birds on the wire with their talons. Have seen it happen...three show budgies in one strike form a hawk hitting the wire. Check through the trees and shrub as rats actually build nests in them and breed in them.

First Breeding Journal
How did you apply it, and what size are the birds ? The drop of ivermectin is rated to dose an average 30 gram bird. Some people apply it using a cotton bud. In my opinion using a cotton bud means most of the dose stays in the cotton bud. I applied ti to two of my show budgies, and I used a syringe. I lifted the feathers at the back of the neck, and my dad let a drop form on the end of the syringe, then gently shook it to make the drop fall onto the skin. Again I ask Squeak.........how big are your birds. If larger than the 30 gram bird they will need two drops.
