  1. If lighting is dull or insignificant then it will affect the urge to breed. Also, to be considered is what chemicals or such are in the garage that may prove harmful if vapours escape.....and no cars to be driven in and out because of exhaust emissions. Again you still have to prevent rodents.
  2. To be considered if keeping birds in breeder cages on a patio............. 1. ESCAPES.....make sure door to breeder cage and to nestbox cannot be lifted. Birds will break out and others will break in. 2. PREDATORS.............rats, cats, and birds ( such as hawks, crows and magpies )................all these creatures can get at the birds. Bird neeting the patio may have to become an option. Poison rodent traps will have to be put out. Neighbours cats will be attracted and hunt at night. 3. VERMIN.............mice and rats will be attracted to them. If Mice go through the cages there will be illness and death to the birds by contaminated food and water. Mice are very capapble of running verticall up brick walls and jumping onto the cages.
  3. Dave, could we see the new plans for the future expansion of McMinn's Budgie Mansion ?

  7. There are some breeders lines of birds that do contain the fertility we all hope for. I find over here that anything from Gary Armstrong has FERTILITY PLUS firmly embedded in the birds. I never have issues producing quantity chicks from Garys birds.

  11. Can you set up a hospital cage for him. A cage with a warm lamp next to it ? 4o watt globe ( not energy saver, but incandescent globe ) ........... could be anything. without vet diagnosis anyone's suggestion re meds would be hit and miss.
  12. Daves advice is very good. Might be the best way if you remove the hens for a break in another cage as well as remove the nestbox.
  13. YES she is a she .....congratulations
  14. Is she likely to be eggbound ? When was she breeding last ?
  15. Omelette has laid her second egg and it looks like its a double yolker I cant remove her from the breeding cage yet to stop this third round of eggs, as the youngest chick is a little too young for dad to take over the feeding. Omelette isnt good at letting him in the nestbox. In another week I can remove her and let the dad continue and I will foster any eggs that are there. She started egglaying this time.........a little too early
  16. dont get excited about all those eggs..............only a few are fertile
  17. Got the price for the slab organised. Most prices came in at over $1500 but one contractor said $1020 so he has the job. Ken has to lay a small retaining wall first, so the slab is about a week or more away.

  20. Another pairing Lacewing hen with her cock....grey green cinnamon /split lacewing So far two chicks. Both chicks seemed to have plum eyes at hatching so I was thinking they were cinnamons. But the eldest has eyes opened today and has red eyes. So lacewing ?
  21. I quite often take a special baby out of the nestbox while I clean the birdroom, and I pop him on my shoulder or just inside my top for body warmth and cuddles. It helps them bond.
