Hi and welcome Captain Heff, great that you are researching a bit first. You've got the right idea about the cage and perches. Toys ? They like those linked rings, wooden ladders, pretend budgies that loop over a perch and bob back and forth. Little plastic lattice style balls with bells in. No mirrors or other shiny objects they can fall in LUST with  No sandppaper sheets for the bottom of the cage and no sandpaper perches. No grit. Good quality seed blend, fresh fruit and vegies, corn silverbeet, grated carrot, grated raw beetroot, etc Our FAQ section has advice for bringing home a new budgie and much much more here.... http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/faqs/ We have members on here who mnay be able to help you select your new friend.........PM Daz and Dr Nat in case they have a baby budgie available.
  5. Can also be about cage size. Birds bought from larger places such as aviary space and into smaller cages often do this.
  6. I try to keep them in the kindie cage for 3 months or so, or till past their first moult. They have stayed longer in the kindie cage through winter as its been so cold outside. Some youngsters went out in the aviary earlier than others depending on how well they were doing. I lost of couple of babies in the aviary when the weather was at its worst this year though  Cant wait for the new flights to be finished. Waiting on the concrete guy now.
  7. Pity about the hen Dave. Some of them show signs too late to step in and help them out
  8. Close up photo of the white and blue pied's cere please ?
  9. You will get pied babies...........rec pied to rec pied will give 100% rec pieds.
  10. Recessive pied males do not have blue ceres.
  11. I did a topic on here re seed in nestboxes. I put it in when chicks are around 2 weeks of age. ARTICLE HERE http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....c=22446&hl= Its added to nesting materials really, not only seed in there. I find best nesting materials to be.......( no particular order ) 1. flaky bran ( available from most bird supply shops ) 2. rolled oats ( porridge style, full sized or quick oats ) Both kinds edible, Keeps nestboxes dry and clean
  12. Have an icecream tub or small bucket with shavings or nesting materials in it. Get the mother to go into the breeder cabinet. Remove chicks to the other container. Remove soiled bedding/nesting materials. Replace with new bedding and replace chicks. If you use a concave and thats all poopy use a paint scraper or similar to remove the build up and replace.
  13. A couple of my favourites
  14. Me too Shannon
  15. 2 chicks and four more eggs to go.
  16. Sibling from second round........
  17. Its about the breeding season and the birds being ready for the nationals. Not to do with the actual year. We are amidst a change of ring issue dates.
  18. There is no date on the ring that tell you which part of 2008 it was hatched. You need breeders records for that.
  19. More photos ............not sure which is which
