Outside Brats Inside
Seeing as I had my outside budgies inside from the storm last night I decided to let them have a fly around with my inside budgies for a nice break. And here are some of the pics that I got. Be prepared I got a lot of pics. The group all together on the play gym The pairs: Izzy and Itha. Izzy happy to finally have his girlfriend/daughter back Isis and Emmett Robie and Kito Albert and Nikio The bachelor and bachelorette: Alo Bacardi on the door handle. Cutey Some flying pics: Everyone freaked out when I got the camera too close Robbie coming in to land. He's like a mini helicopter notice all the seed being blown past Alo and into his face. Nikio with a swift dart Nikio: Mwahahaha mum I'm coming to get you! Isis: Noooo aaagh!!! Run away! Alo swooping to the side Isis didn't quite make the perch, there were too many Doodz at teh base (lolcats speak) Then some cutie pics Nikio. I love how she has a grey coloured beak, rather than the yellow beak. Her mum Isis has a greyish beak too. So I have two grey beaks and two blue footed budgies (blue foots: Alo and Albert) I wonder about the genetics behind both. Nom nom nom Emmett not liking the flash Alo! Floof! Tee hee Bacardi in her wheel (which she just uses to sit in, not run in) Now that you have drowned in my multitude of pictures I hope you enjoyed them.

Avian Biology 101
That is excellent stuff Chryso. Good revision for me Very good and you have written your articles so well. I'll add some stuff that really interests me: Many birds are also able to move their maxilla (upper jaw/beak) separately from their cranium, this also occurs in some fish, whereas in mammals this joint is fused. The temporomadibular joint is also quite different to mammals. Mammals have a very unique jaw, which is one of the many things that define them. A mammalian jaw connects to the temporal bone with the ramus of the mandible travelling up under the zygomatic arch (the bone which forms the lower part of the eye socket in most animals and forms our cheek bone), this forms a complex joint. In birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish this joint is a simple hinge joint. Dog skull Secretary bird skull On your first article: you forgot to mention that the sacrum is also fused to the pelvic and lumbar bones to form the synsacrum. But that is me just nit picking. Good work

A Awful Scare With Roxy
Maybe you could try some mesh screen to block the gap, that way the fridge is still ventilated and Roxy can't get stuck.

Storms In New Zealand
New Zealand is currently under attack from a large storm that is covering the whole country. Roofs have been ripped off, power out and people killed. The majority of the storm, in my area, hit during this morning. It consisted of strong winds that were actually almost picking me off the ground. So there I was sitting in lectures feeling the wind attack the tower, slowly starting to freak out as the winds got stronger. I couldn't sit there and listen while I was imagining my budgies outside in the wind being thrown around. Thus I raced back home as fast as I could, which was a bit of a mission as I had to coordinate buses. I finally got home to find my budgies fine and upright. So I hauled them and their big cage inside the house. They are now currently residing in the dining room, a little perplexed as to why they still have lights on, but safe none the less. Once I sorted them out and cleaned up the cage I decided that since they were inside that now was as good a time as any to remove a budgie from the cage and merge him into the inside budgie flock. This took a really long time to decide!! I wanted to bring in a budgie that wasn't related to Bacardi and Izzy, so that less incest could go on. I really wanted to bring in Robbie, because he is so much like his father Arkady and I miss his father, but Robbie has a girlfriend and I don't really want to split them up ( I feel mean) and 4 is too many inside for me right now. I wanted to bring Alo in as he is tame and very pretty, but he is Bacardi's full brother and Izzy's son. So I decided to bring in Emmett, no relation what so ever. He had started to bond with Isis, but I don't think Isis really cared. Alo is after her anyway so that will give him a chance to finally get a date. Emmett and Bacardi were just starting out as BF/GF when I split them up, so I think she will be very happy that her sexy toyboy budgie will be back. So I snaffled Emmett out of the large cage and clipped his wings (he is so not tame!) and now he is in Semi quarantine under Izzy and Bacardi's cage. Just to keep an eye on him. So After I had done all that I had to catch a bus back into uni and barely made it across the bridge. The bus was almost blown into oncoming traffic. Made it back in time for a class photo and then went on to my practical where I successfully anaesthetised and reawakened a sheep. Got home in time to watch the devastation unfold on the news. It was a very interesting day and my budgies will be having a quiet night in, until, at least, the storm has gone.

A Dilemma!
I believe he is a full body colour greywing. His body colour is hardly diluted at all from what I can see of it. He is the same darkness as my Emmett who has no greywing at all and is a bright green. It is possible he is just a greywing dark green so he appears bright green. But his sheen to me suggests full body greywing light green. Or he could be a cobalt on the lighter side and then diluted out. But his sheen looks very sky blue under that yellow. My cobalt greywing looks like a light blue but he does not carry that sort of teal/turquoise like blue on him that a skyblue does. The bird here seems to be presenting with that turquoisey/teal skyblue colour under the yeallow. However it is hard to tell as we cannot actually see his body colour properly

okay So I'm A Complete Sucker -
He looks just like my royal (formerly fatness) Arkady. Even has the whole feathers over the feet thing going on.

I'm sad because Falconry is illegal in NZ and Aus. I so wanted to do it when I was younger.

Do Budgies Actually Enjoy Flying?
Train him to fly to you on command and give him a treat. Budgies may like flying as much as we like running. Some people enjoy it more than others and you are more likely to go running and keep it up if you have a running partner. It's the whole exercise thing. I notice that the less budgies I have the less flying they do. My outside monsters fly all the time. My inside monsters just like to sit and fat on the perches.

Violet Birds-
Maybe it is a grey violet. Or dilute violet
-
A Dilemma!
Violet can act like a dark factor so it makes the bird look dark as if it has dark factors. This is especially so in green or golden/yellowface birds. It is hard to be sure of genetics with out more offspring and breeding. But I suspect your baby is yellowface type 2 /goldenface (for some reason people think my Arkady is not a golden face and he is way greener and yellower than that, anyhow). However looking back at it, it is quite possible that the bird is actually a dark green darkened by violet factors as it does not seem to have more blue towards the vent. IE its colour is too even to be a golden/yellowface. Could you look at the underside of the wings and tell us if that is blue/violet or green. This will tell us whether it is a green or a yellowface type 2/ goldenface. Anyhow just ignoring the yellow base and yellowface for now. I believe your baby has at least one violet factor to it. Most likely 2. Both parents possess no dark factors nor do they each possess 2 violet factors each as they are both presenting as light greens/skyblues. Thus I believe each are carrying a violet factor. The father could possibly be carrying a dark factor which is diluted by greywing as stated before and this would be more likely as then half the babies would have dark factors. If the baby's darkness was created by violet factors alone then only about 1/4 of the babies would be like that. But then individuals never follow statistics Looking at father's cheek patches - they are not very violet so he probably doesn't carry it (or it is diluted by greywing gene) I think that father is: Full body coloured greywing light green male split to opaline (however he could possibly be a cobalt green greywing split to opaline) I think that mother is: yellowface type 2 opaline skyblue carrying violet I think that baby is: Violet green opaline split to fullbody colour greywing

Egg Absorbed Into Body Cavity
Yes Saffy had this. She was lucky and did not develop septic egg peritonitis and just reabsorbed it. From reading that I would suggest you don't breed from her again then. But if she is a valuable girl then just keep an eye on her. I think it is not too uncommon. Just talk to your vet about it. Might be a good idea to foster her eggs out or if you can't (which I'm sure you can) refrigerate (don't freeze) them until she is well enough to incubate them. Oh just reread your post. She is feeding chickies. Then don't worry She may not actually have this and could just have egg bum because everything has been stretched down there. She just gave birth to several eggs!!! They are big things to come out!! My hens always had a bit of an egg butt after laying. I would think that it is that their tissues have not re-elasticised back to their original shape yet. Yellow could mean yolk, but then you can never be sure. Was she showing any of the other symptoms?

This Week
Today we had an awesome lecture about Raptors and falconry. It was very fun and most interesting. We have a paper that is basically just about wildlife and mostly birds so it is very fun.

Arkady Is Off To The Vet Tomorrow
okay so he went in for his op on friday. Unfortunately during the procedure he had a little bleed out making it hard to see with the endoscope (little camera on the end of a tube that they can insert into the body cavity of an animal and look around). They decided he had been under anaesthesia too long, so they brought him out of it. This means that next week they are going to go in from the other side and hope that he doesn't bleed again. So the poor little fella has an air sac full of blood at the moment. Learnt about some pituitary problems today which share some of his symptoms. But his are so vague he could have anything. Interesting fact I learnt today. Approximately 1 quarter of the human population has a pituitary tumour. These are often asymptomatic and noone notices, but sometimes they can press on the optic chiasma (where the optic nerve comes into the brain) and cause tunnel vision. These are apparently easy to treat as well. They also interfere with menstral cycles and something else as well. I forgot. So yeah, if you have problems in both those areas then you never know.
