Gum Trees Called "koala Food"
The ones we have have kind of oval leaves and flaky bark, but the higher up the tree you go the skinnier the leaves get, until they are about 1.5cm- 2cm wide. I gave it to my birds and they are fine. They ate it and I use the branches as perches.

Blue Feet
No they are not working for me . Yes it seems that pink feet belong to the fairer colours, or with birds with more mutations, but not consistently and blue feet with birds of less mutations? Maybe?

Why Genetics Does My Head In....
So we have to get rid of yellowface type 2 dogs and cats? :budgiedance:

Peach,black,they Dont Exist Do They.
You'd think they'd be able to spell "Budgerigar" right don't you? I don't know if I could trust an article that had such bad spelling.

My Horrible Day That Ended Up With A New Budgie- What Is She?
Aw. That is so sad. Sorry to hear about your babies. You're welcome. I have been living with 2 weimaraners for the last 2 years (my flatmate's dogs) and they have more titles in their name than I do or ever will!.

Blue Feet
Sure that'll be very interesting. Make tiny pictures like I did.

Blue Feet
Well, blue feet has only appeared in my males so far. Maybe pink feet is sex linked. That makes more sense, however it doesn't explain how a blue footed boy then got two blue genes from his parents who between them had only 1 blue foot gene. It would make way more sense if Saffy had grey feet, but I'm sure she had pink feet. That's why I was wondering if anyone else had genetics of feet for their flock. I am thinking that grey footed birds would be split. But whether they are split for blue feet or pink feet is the key. But it seems to work as a co domininat thing. However it the colour relied on many genes, then those theories are shot. So far all my blue foots have these things in common: They are boys and they are spangles. That is it. My pink feets are all spangles and yellowfaces.

My Horrible Day That Ended Up With A New Budgie- What Is She?
If it's from the vet then it is fine. I was just worried you might be spraying her with fly spray or something! (You never know!). Yes. Collies aren't allergic to it as such, but rather they have something different in their blood brain barrier that lets ivermectin into their brain. Ivermectin works on parasites by affecting their nerves and causing paralysis, whereby they can be expelled easily, can't hold on to the host any more or die from starvation etc. Because collie dogs (and any collie cross (and sometimes other dogs)) have a more permeable blood brain barrier to ivermectin than most other dogs, the ivermectin gets in their brain and paralyses them and they die from suffocation. So I definitely agree with your stance on not using ivermectin in your house. (I'm not sure if the same problem happens with other forms of avermectin (that is not a typo (original form begins with an 'a')), but it may be best to avoid moxidectin, avermectin and anything with 'ectin' in the title (I'm on holiday and don't have my notes with me )) It is possible to save a collie dog that has had ivermectin. We were shown a case of a collie who ingested it. They kept him on life support and everyday he got a little better, but it took him 11 days of hospitalisation to recover (which is very expensive, but if you love your pooch... ), they just had to wait for the ivermectin to leave his system. Because they are paralysed they cannot move the muscles in their ribcage or their diaphragm to breath, so they suffocate. I just thought you might like to read a little more on that for interest's sake

My Bird Is Bleeding!
You can also use cornflour if you don't have white pepper.
-
Blue Feet
Well it seems that blue feet is not dominant as it appears out of pairings of non blue footed birds.

Lovely girl. I don't think spraying her with pyrethrin is a very good thing to do. What brand was it and what was it intended for? Pyrethrin poisoning is possible.

Why Genetics Does My Head In....
Ah yes, good ol' DNA and genetics. If you are interested they teach it in first year papers at universities. You can do courses extramurally if you wish. As part of our course we had to take papers about the cell and its functions (including reproduction of the cell) and genetics. Fun times. It is actually really interesting stuff and for anyone keen on the genetics side of thing in breeding budgies I recommend taking a course in it. Extramural is the way to go if you don't have time to go to university. Not only is it informative, but you learn some really interesting things, like how they can make flies grow legs on their head instead of antennae. Why snakes have no legs and how certain mutations (like albinism) occur. It really brings your level of understanding dominant, recessive, co-dominant, linked, and sex-linked genes to a very indepth level. You get to learn how certain genes affect the body to produce the mutations that can be seen. Like how mutated genes produce mutated proteins that function differently to their proper intention, because of their different programming which caused a different shape. Fascinating stuff. I recommend doing a course in it or taking a few papers, it really changes your way of thinking.

Melbourne Meet Up-
I'd love to come MB, but unfortunately my schedule just doesn't permit
-
Decisions...
If MB is happy to look after him and your other birds while you are away, then that problem is lessened. There is still the issue that you are not seeing it so much, but to be honest I think that having MB (bless her) as a back up birdie sitter lessens that strain, that I talked about in my former post, a fair degree and makes it much easier on you. There is still that degree of uncertainty, but however not so bad now. (I'm trying hard not to taint your decision)

Captive Foraging With Squee
That is really cool Chryso. Thanks for sharing. We all know what my budgies are getting in their cage tomorrow! Just recently I gave my budgies a small branch of eucalyptus leaves each and they absolutely destroyed them. All I found the next day were little tiny pieces at the bottom of their cages. So that is another fun thing for them to do and is nutritious also I believe?

Clueless Breeders
Yes I agree with you too Dean. When you own an animal you have the responsibility to the animal to learn about its proper care and welfare. When I was a kid, before I got a new animal I would always go to the library and get out every single book on that animal and read up on it and not just because I felt I should, but I loved finding out how to care for them and how to spoil them silly and make their environment as fun as possible. I've read almost every book on small pets possible as well as some dog and cat ones. And for all the pets I do own now, I actually have a book for each one. Even my fish! I even read books on ferrets even though we aren't allowed them here. So I just find it kind of strange that when people get a pet they don't educate themselves. Even when I pick up a wild bird or chick, I'm quick on the internet to find out how to care for it.

My Bush Budgies Breeding
I always handled the babies in the same room as the nest box and never had a problem. The hen could always see what is happening. But I think aslong as there is a chick in the nest box she will feed it.

Question about eyes
Yeah in birds with "no iris ring", their iris is just a dark grey brown colour.

What In The World Is She Doing?
Sometimes girl budgies like to flirt like the boys. I have 2 girls that like to do that. They are my little tomboys.
-
My Bush Budgies Breeding
Handling the bub every day while letting it still be fed by its parents still results in a very tame bird, as tame as hand reared ones. I think they are even better too, because they still know they are a budgie so they don't have so many behavioural issues. I have heard that handreared hens can become quite bitey too or are more inclined to become bitey.
