Hi all,

Hope some of you may be able to answer a few questions for me in relation to a budgie.

Story is I work in wildlife rescue and my focus is on birds. Today I went to the "rescue" of a baby cockatoo. When I got there he was in fact a pure white (albino) budgie! Lol.

I am assuming he is an escapee pet. He is quite young and still growing some of his flight feathers which are still in their sheath. He caught me unexpectedly and gave me a rather nasty bite which is quite funny considering I have so far avoided the nips from cockatoos, corellas, tawnies and the like!

He was apparently being attacked by noisy miners and came close to being road kill after two cars went over the top of him.I placed him on heat and within a few hours he was up and eating and chirping away. It is also pouring rain here in Sydney so I am of the opinion he is one lucky budgie.

I know nothing about budgies and want some information so as I can rehome him to the best person. So,

1. Are they solitary or do they prefer a friend?

2. Would it be wrong to rehome him solo?

3. Do they like alot of human interaction if by themselves?

4. What do they eat apart from seed (tried apple without success)?

5. Why is he shredding the newspaper on the base of the cage?

6. Why does he seem so intent on wanting out of his cage?

7. How do I identify the best budgie owner for him? What should I be looking out for?

Any information would be of help. Thanks.

Hi

First thing to do is find out if the owner is looking for it...........check all online and newspaper adverts.

secondly HE is more than likely a SHE as albino is a sex linked gene and more chance its female especially based on the biting it has displayed already. For confirmation post a clear photo of the cere above its beak ( use no flash on the camera ).

Intent on wanting out of the cage indicates the freedom she has just had or having come from a larger space like an aviary.

Please in the meantime feed a good quality budgie seed.

as far as everything else goes.......I say please make all attempts to find its real owner first. Too many people who find birds dont do enough to return it to its owner and thats very sad for whoever is missing it.

Thank you. I have been out early this morning plastering notes on posts. Unfortunately she was found on a long road uninhabitated by anyone which runs along a railway line. I have decided to run an ad in my local paper as I would like to return her to her rightful owner.

Will upload photo later.

Hi all,

I know nothing about budgies and want some information so as I can rehome him to the best person. So,

1. Are they solitary or do they prefer a friend?............................................A friend, either human or budgie.

2. Would it be wrong to rehome him solo?............................ ......................No, but see above.

3. Do they like alot of human interaction if by themselves?..........................Yes they do.

4. What do they eat apart from seed (tried apple without success)? ...........Any fruit/veg, Hard boiled egg. NOT Avocado.

5. Why is he shredding the newspaper on the base of the cage?................It's just something to do to pass the time.

6. Why does he seem so intent on wanting out of his cage?........................He's probably just exploring. He will settle soon..

7. How do I identify the best budgie owner for him? What should I be looking out for? ..Someone with knowledge of budgies.

Any information would be of help. Thanks.

PS seems Kaz answered your questions while I was writing my post.. Apologise for any repeats.

Yours B.J.

It is so nice to hear a lost budgie story with a happy ending. :D

By the way, did the owner tell you whether it was a male or female? Just curious.
