Tried doing search on topic nothing came up of help I saw...

Got frustrated this morning as I took away two overdue and dead in the shell eggs, the thing I have noticed are chicks are fully developed and few days off hatching when they mysertiously die....was from my favourite pair...these two!!!

Does this happen alot and you guys just go Oh well... or is there anything we can do do help it from happening or things to watch out for!!!

Cheers

Dan

Cause is NOT only deficiences. Sometimes mothers get off the eggs due to a disturbance in the night, other causes can be spinning the eggs by getting off them too quickly at nestchecks, dads can addle them by getting in the nestbox and being clumsy. Chicks can die in shell due to polyoma virus ( french moult ), psittacosis going through and a multitude of other reasons.

The saying..........DONT COUNT YOUR CHICKEN BEFORE THEY HATCH...........always rings in my ears. Its the very reason I do not mark eggs with dates and hold my breath waiting for hatchings or getting upset when they dont. I only count a breeding as successful once a chick fledges.

But I am a NO NONSENSE practical kinda gal.......thats just me :D

After breeding budgies for some time you get to be just that way Kaz. Soooooooooo many different things can happen to developing eggs/young chicks even older chicks - once they are out of the nest or better still, in the aviary, you know they have hatched out okay! :)

Are you adding vitamin B12 to your water? It is the best thing for helping hatchability.

You can get liquid B12 from Elenbee,i put a teaspoon into 2 litres as i don't think the mixture is as strong as it should be.Just a tip for you NOWBUDGIE ,a couple of days prior to the eggs hatching get the sitting hen out of the nest box into the breeding cage and give her a spray with water, does the same job as dipping the eggs in warm water as some people do.This is just an easier way, works for me ,Thank Garry Hyslop for that one .

I've had to remove 3 eggs today that were between 5 and 3 days overdue. One was accidently pulled out of the box by mum with some nesting material and broken. I checked the contents of the egg before disposing of it and it looks like it stopped growing maybe halfway through the incubation process.
