I am just reading this now for the first time, so Renee, you will have to forgive my tardiness in responding.

You know what I don't get Kaz - Why go to all the bother of bringing along tools to unscrew the aviary wire from the frame when wire cutters are much quicker?

if you are trying ot be subtle, than screw drivers are the go. They can be used as part of a long term plan, wire cutters are short term, one off

Cordless drill with screwdriver attachment is very quick..wire cutters on good quality wire would take longer

That is very worrying, Kaz. It was an extremely brazen act. The perpetrators were probably nearby when you went outside. Do you know an electrician or a farmer? Those special fences really hurt.

I've only just gotten to this thread as my internet connection keeps dying. I am so sorry to hear about this Kaz! What a horrible thing to do!

 

That certainly is very daring, doing something like that - I've seen your place and I wouldn't have thought that area would be the most easily accessible sort of place, nor would I have thought anyone would do that at all. Your aviary seemed very secure.

 

It worries me greatly. I hope whomever it is, realises that you will not put up with something like that - its just not right. I didn't think people would be like that. I hope you haven't lost any of your beautiful birds - they are safer with you than out in the wilderness and if the person was trying to "save/release" them, then they have big issues.

 

Sounds bad, but could you maybe stick some sort of barbed wire along the edges where the screws are? Hmmm maybe not such a good idea

I had the same thought, but the "bird mill" accuser apparently lives in the US acording to her profile... but not that that means anything. We all know how easy it is to supply false information on the internet.

No. The first attempt to break into the aviary was in January...........well before any bird mill accusations. Also that person is from the USA.

Cordless drill are very quiet and wont be heard unless you are arounf 15-20 feet away. Torchlight moving around down there would be a good reason the birds were going berserk in there earlier in the week during the night though. If someone was down there using a torch.Neighbours wont investigate noises there either as they are used to us using tools down there and used to the birds noises too.

Sensor lights are great but you'd want to set it up so the dog's can't set it off. You can direct the sensor where ever you like though, so may be an option.

Kaz, I am shocked and dismayed to log on this morning and find this topic. I had figured that whoever was stealing budgies in the news lately would not be able to bother your birds. I guess, like everyone else, I thought you had a pretty secure set-up. Well, I guess you will, now, huh? It's too bad you have to make it so secure that it hinders your own access to the screws. Be careful of that barbed wire, in future.

 

Not only do we need Kaz to patrol the forum to rid us of our mistakes, we also need her to catch the local budgie thief, 'cause no one else has nabbed them yet. Just one more hat for you to wear, Kaz.

 

Anyway, my thoughts and prayers are with you, as this will probably be affecting your sleep for a while.

I have one concern though after reaading through this thread; I only hope the person or persons resposible don't read this forum because they will have been informed of the new security measures and that you haven't contacted the police. Might be a good idea to throw a few more surprises in there and not mention it in here.

If someone has gone to the trouble of jumping your perimeter to gain access, evidently checked out your aviary construction and come back with tools - Why didn't they just access the flights the same way you do via the breeding room? (I'm not giving anything away here 'cause you've mentioned that in your thread about your aviary)

 

As you have intimated, they wanted to make it so that it wouldn't be noticed and obviously been interrupted - if they had gone in the normal way you wouldn't have been the wiser!

To access the same way we do Renee, means crossing our yard and more chance of being seen. Seems whoever has been at the aviary is coming in from the back or over a neighbours fence or another way which I wont disclose right now. Also I lock the doors of my birdroom. Edited January 17, 2010 by KAZ
