IF you pair up 2 Dommie Pieds you can breed a DF Dommie Pied, but they are long tubular birds with Recessive Pied-like markings. Not advisable.

why do you say this is not avisable ren

if you have two very well marked good sized birds with good carictoristics and you pair them up

and get df doms

mabe they not showable but when put with a normal all chicks will be dom so this getting you ahead in your dom pied breeding

most times the markings come out perfict as they carry the perfict marked gene

Agree with GB. Not everyone breeds for show and you must remember that when advising about breeding.

No, no, no, no, no! I didn't mean it like that! :D

By all means, pair 2 Dommies together and produce DF Dommies - the only problem is that they do not look like Dommies and so can be very confusing for the uninitiated. B)

A very good point, which brings us to discussing Phoebe, the hen in nest #2, who is paired with Bailey.

016.jpg

I always thought Phoebe was a double factor dominant pied. But the breeder I bought Bailey from (on the right, above), she though Phoebe looked like dom pied split to recessive pied.

I'm not really sure why. Maybe because some of Phoebe's wing markings go further down her wings than you would expect from a DF dom pied.

So to figure out Phoebe, I paired her with Bailey, and if she is DF dom, then 100% of her chicks will have the dom pied factor. If she is dom/ recessive, then half of her chicks would be dom pied, and the other half would be split for recessive pied.

This is where Bailey's mutations come in. He has a pied spot on the back of his head, which isn't visible in the picture. He also has one clear flight feather on his right wing. (Barely visible in photo.) Visually, you would think that he was normal/ rec pied. But the breeder said he threw dom pied chicks when paired to a normal hen. So we think he must be a badly/heavily marked dom pied.

I have worked out Punnet squares based on the different possibilities, and I came up with the following ideas:

a. If we get a DF dom pied chick, we know that Bailey is dom pied.

b. SF dom pied chicks don't tell us anything, there are bound to be some no matter what.

c. If we get dom pied/ rec pied combos, that tells us that ONE of the parents has the recessive pied gene, but not which parent. (That is, if we can tell the difference between a DF dom pied and a dom/rec combo.) That of course, is the original question about Phoebe.

d. If we get a normal chick with a recessive pied spot, then we KNOW that Phoebe carries rec pied. (Because we already know she doesn't carry normal)

e. And if we get a visual recessive pied chick, then we KNOW that both parents are split for rec. pied.

None of the four chicks is normal, so we can rule out possibility d, and we don't have to worry about looking for pied spots, either.

I'll post some pictures of the chicks, but I think they are too young at this stage to determine much.

These are the best I have so far. But they are outdated, the chicks are older, now. So I will have to go down later and get some better pictures.

okay for starts ren you do know that df doms have iris rings wheres rec pied do not

their you have your diffrentce

a rec pied from a dom breeding may have on eye with an iriss ring and vis a vercer

so sf dom and sf dom giving df doms their is no way you can be confused as their not going to have any rec gene their for the df dom will have iriss rings

but for hearsay

just pretend the sf dom pairing both the birds are infact split rec pied

then you will have possibility of df doms sf doms and rec pieds

nothing else

a combination pied is just name given to the birds from a rec pied dom breeding it just expresses that the bird could infact through out unexpected rec pied if its a dom

if its infact a rec pied it may just look more like a dom in its markings as the markings become spazmotic

how ever all rec pieds will infact go on to have the black eyes regardless of the fact they look dom or they could be dom but carry the rec pied gene which is why the name combo was giving either way a dom with black eyes /rec pied

or a rec pied with dom like markings

very easy once its grasped

you have a definite dom pie chick the second one the first one is a definite rec pied chick

so both are split rec pied

from what im seeing

a rec pied from a dom breeding may have on eye with an iriss ring and vis a vercer

also many DF dom pieds have one iris ring on one eye and none on the other.

Your welcome, Ratzy. Yes, it's been snowing all day, and expected to keep on all night. Good thing tomorrow is Saturday!

My husband and son got the car unstuck without me, so I get more computer time.

But we are supposed to leave in an hour for a dinner event at our church, tonight. We are hoping it's cancelled, but one of our daughters is already there, so some way, we need to get her home. Fun.

I have more pictures, so since I have more time, here they are:

I just realized that my photobucket has all the babies in backwards order, so I think I messed up their pictures in my last post. I will have to go back and check if they are right or wrong. And I don't think I actually have any of baby 2. Oh, I am so not good at this technical  stuff!

In Phoebe and Bailey's nest there are four.

In the other nests: Colleen and Sean have 7 and Finnie and Patrick have 6. (17 in total! )

Yes they do! ;) The bigger the bird, the more bird-brained it gets plus more vulnerable to genetic abnormalities (such as feather cysts) and unfortunately in many cases, weaker and more susceptible to illness.

Update: Last night when I checked the nest boxes, I noticed that Colleen has laid a new egg! Her youngest of the 7 chicks is just 3 1/2 weeks old. I don't want Colleen and Sean to go through the stress of another round, so I'm planning to remove any eggs she lays.

But I'm wondering, if I remove them too soon, will it just encourage her to keep laying more, but if I just leave the egg alone for now, will that cause a problem, too?

I'm considering just leaving everything alone for another few days, and when the youngest is 4 weeks, put them all to the bottom of the cage, and remove the nest box.

So far, the oldest two are staying out full time, and the next two are going in and out, which leaves 3 full timers inside the box.

I prefer to take a hands off approach, but I will be keeping an eye out for any bad behavior on Colleen's part. All advice and suggestions are welcome!

any egg you remove, she will replace.

With the youngest chick aged 3 and a half weeks, ( only some days away from most chicks fledging age ) i would remove the nestbox. Put all chicks in a box on the breeding cage floor and if dad is a good feeder put the hen in a seperate cage out of earshot of the dad so she can rest up and stop her egglaying cycle. She will lay maybe another one or two off the perch but she will stop.

I've had chick leave the nest at 4 weeks but have stayed with the cock or hen or both till they are eating seed... I agree with Karen, any eggs you remove she will replace putting more stress on herself... Remove the nesting box if you can if you can't replace the eggs with plastic ones if you have them...

As long as she is in breeding mode ( egglaying ) and chicks are still either in the nest or coming and going....................it leaves it wide open for her to get nasty and attack her chicks to remove them from her new nest. Can happen and does fairly often.

I think it best the nestbox is removed. Icecream tub upturned on the bottom of the cage...........with seed in it as bedding will work out for the remaining chicks.
