I always thought dec and black eyed self were the same. Very different Marlon, as previously discussed the DEC needs two recessive genes and a clearwing gene, whereas the Black Eye is a recessive gene and only needs the two recessive genes, one from each parent. They were only discovered recently compared to other mutations, but as they are a much smaller variety than other not many breeders take them up as you could not win Grand Champion with this variety. This accounts more for their rarity than their difficulty in breeding. Feathers. Link to comment

I had two mutations in mind that the picture matched. Black eyed self and a dilute yellow. I've only seen one other picture of a BES so I wasn't sure. Link to comment

I know they are not common, that’s a nice type bird Feathers, do you have more than the one bird…I started to get suspicious that you knew what colour that birds was & was just testing us, when you asked…any more guesses…(Laughing out loud). PS. I thought black Eyed Selfs had no wing markings. Edited May 26, 2007 by Norm Link to comment

I thought black Eyed Selfs had no wing markings. Hi Norm, I have two. A cock and a hen. I will try to get 1 round of splits from them and 1 round together, so I have a bigger stock to work with next season. Elly worked out fairly quickly too that I knew what mutation the bird was. I remember when I first joined, Nerwen I think, did the same thing. I found it was a really good exercise, so I decided to repeat it. The full descrption of BES birds are in this post: http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....topic=15223&hl= A black eyed self bird should have their back, rump, breast flanks and underparts all an even shade of colour throughout. Faint markings are found on their cheeks, back of head, neck and wings. Their eyes are dark with a white iris ring Feathers. Link to comment

It's not a mutation talk of much and at that time the knowledge was unforgotten in the back of my mind. Also I know when I first heard of them I was mixing the word SELF with CLEAR Not helpful. I looked at your other post Feathers & saw the answer to some of my questions. Good idea how your going to breed them, gives you some birds with different genetics to work with straight off. Do you know how close the two you bought are? Link to comment
