Anyone Ever Had A Bird Fall Off Their Perch

Featured Replies

Lemon just did it, freaked the **** out of me. :) She seems fine, woke everyone up however. Because the bottom of the cage has a wire grill I have put a folded tea towel down in one corner in case she does not want to sleep on the perch. Hmmm I know she is an older bird, maybe I should up the vitimans that I give her in her water? or maybe it was just a freak thing. Maybe I am just worrying to much!

What ever caused it i'd definatly say it's not normal :S ?

Does she seem under the weather?

Nope she seemed fine today, and I turned on all the lights and get her out and looked her over she seems fine. At the moment Lime (her husband) is sleeping on the grill next to the tea towel and she has crawled back onto the perch. Hmmmmmm

Birds do sometimes fall off the perch. Even the most co-ordinated little guys can have an unco moment. If she is fine in every other way I wouldn't be too worried, maybe the perch she was on was a little too thin for her.

In the last few years of his life my beautiful buddy Joey fell off his perch increasingly, until he'd do it about once a week. I made sure the perches weren't super high off the ground, and padding sounds like a good idea. But forr him it was part of the aging process.

Mine falls off htings all the time...he's only young so i think its a bit of an over-confidence/lack of judgement thing for him... it is worrying at times (but secretly funny when you kniw there's nothing wrong with him!). The other day he was sleeping, got a bit of a fright adn went to jump to his top perch, totally missed and disappeared to the floor of his cage. All we saw from teh couch was him flap and drop... then his little head peeping up above the base bit of the cage before he shook himself from head to toe and climbed back up. I think he was more emabrrassed that anything else!

Realllllyyyyyy?

Mine don't. Well not that I have seen ... I would have thought that this wouldn't be a normal thing !!!

Budgies can be strange :D I had a budgie once that used to sleep hanging upside down from the perch....like a BAT ;):)

Pretty was more apt to have "night frights" and fall off the perch, Merlin has never had them that I am aware of.

 I can't say i have noticed any of my birds 'fall off the perch' :D

Personally i would associate it with a bird that is sick in some way..... but that's just me

She seems fine and no visable signs of sickness, I did a complete body serch and found no signs of any growths or anything else. There is no respitory issues no issues with her poo. I am going to stick both of them on a broad spec antibiodic and then boost her vitiams for the next few weeks. She is an older bird but I just can't justify taking her to the vet when there is nothing to say that this is more then just her being unco.

I did split her fromher mate for about half a day on Sunday and she sulked and he screamed so I decided it was better for them to be together then be apart.

Actually... I have. Pat did fall off a perch while snoring a couple times. And if they're with another bird in the cage, they could've been nudged too!

You know, when you think about it... Mine sleep on one foot with their faces in the back. It must be normal they fall off here and then!

She seems fine now. Let her out for a fly around and today I came home for luch and snapped this video of them

Which has nothing to be with the falling off of a perch but is cute :glare:

Rang the vet and he said to up her vitiams and keep and eye on her but more likey she just had an unco moment.

It's their quirks I love....

No! Naughty AV. Don't put them on Broad spectrum antibiotics unless told to by the vet. Bad girl. Slap on the wrist.

Not to mention resistance, but antibiotics also kills off commensal bacterias in the gut and may predispose her to gut problems if the wrong type of bacteria recolonise her gut and also make it a little harder for her to digest her food in the meantime while she waits for more bacteria to grow. Therefore making your added vitamins and goodies void or not work as well. Thus unless there is a pathogenic bacterial infection you will be doing more harm than good.

I've fallen off the bed before and I'm still alive :D

Ouch!

The vet recommended it, I have a bird that has the dredded "p" word! They are not in the same room etc... so to be on the safe side 5 days of Triple C as recommended by my local avairan vet. I then have to give her a mix of veggies and protien to re balance her internals. To tell you the truth it's going to take a week for the Triple C to get here so I think unless she does it again before then I might not bother with it.
