Scarcity Of Mutated Varieties
Well my theory would be that we as humans have a dominant gene and recessive gene, dominant being more common and recessive and being scarcer for e.g. Brown eyes are more common in humans as these are the dominant genes and blue eyes are recessive, and then hazel, green and other eye colours, there are many other examples such as ones like the hitch hikers thumb gene. Anyway, budgies and other animals have dominant and recessive genes just like us, and green is probably the dominant and blue recessive, and then you can compare other colours like the cobalt vs. the lutinos and albinos etc. some are just more dominant in the genes than others. So if that didn't help, think about this. Although the parents are both lutinos, you could still have a Cobalt as that may be the dominant gene so mums gene would be l (little l for recessive, and l being lutino) and C (Capital C for dominant genes, and C being cobalt. So she has both genes, one being recessive and the other being the dominant. Now the father had the same too, now they are likely to have out of 4 babies 3 cobalts and 1 lutino budgie. Now if that doesn't make since i'm attempting to add a table/diagram that clearly shows how it works. Sorry for the lecture. Fathers genes C (for dominant cobalt gene) l (he also has a recessive gene) Mother genes C (dominant gene) l (she has the recessive gen too) the two parents are then taken and crossed with each gene in a 2 way table and these are the genetics that occur after the cross. CC, (so this chick would be cobalt) Cl (this chick should be cobalt) Cl (this chick should be cobalt) ll (this chick would be a lutino) Out of 4 chicks these are what genes they COULD have 3 cobalt's and 1 lutino budgie, and could happen in any order, and or more of one or the other, but that gives a rough idea of how and why there are scarcities of some colours.

Yes, I am not sure exactly what you mean either without a photo.

New Male, But Previously Bred Female
Thanks robyn, that is what I am attempting now, and they appear to be bonding, however I cant tell with my albino male as he is albino he doesn't get the coloured nose, how do you tell when he's in condition?

Sick Budgie - Diagnosis Unknown
Sorry for that news. It is very likely to though that she was born with it, though you did breed her and are more likely to know the genetics of the parents, so that's an unlikely possibility.

New Male, But Previously Bred Female
Thanks everyone, I have been monitoring them, and I hope that the female wasn't the one who killed her previous mate, as he had been pecked at, however there was a butcher bird there at that time, I now shoo them off instantly.

New Male, But Previously Bred Female
Hello everyone, I have a male budgie that has never been put down to breed as he is my pet, now I want his genes to continue, however the female I intend to use has attempted to breed before but the mate got attacked by a butcher bird (evil beaks that they have), and was wondering if you can I guess re-mate her? The male is always active and often just annoys other budgies, there have only been a select few budgies that he doesn't try to dominate. Can I calm him down to be a good mate and parent if they can breed, or is it not wise to breed with this male? Thanks, Budgie_Mad.

Moving A Hen With Chicks
I have moved mine before, nothing bad happened, and hey one of my cages bottom fell out and the female was in the box and they continued (none where hurt, thank goodness). However you don't want to disturb them too much, if you do ensure you do it quickly and smoothly.

Breeding Pairs
Mind you though that is when they become bonded, I know I tried to breed for 2 years before I got my first egg, however I was colony breeding. The bonding process could be a day to a couple of weeks I guess, just however long it takes. The females cere is almost rough or flaky I would say.

Breeding Pairs
My first advice is to definitely feed them fruit and vegetables, my birds like broccoli and silver beat, also silver beat helps them get into breeding condition. Secondly - leave them be, don't disturb them. Ensure that they are both in breeding condition, female will have a dark brown cere (nose) and the male a deep blue. About putting them together, you can just put two together, but you must ensure that they are not fighting, as they can kill if they don't like each other. Lastly, I strongly recommend not colony breeding (all birds in one cage / aviary) as this often leads to death and blood. If you have any other questions just PM me.

Budgerigar Calendar Competions

Male To Female Ratio In An Aviary
Well, myself and other breeders I am sure of, recommend that you only breed females 3 times a year at the most, as it is a very stressful task for them. So they can breed more often but, you will notice that she is in condition when her cere is a dark brown

Rainbow Lorikeets
They are amazing. I was going to buy rainbow lorikeets, but I didn't have the room. I would be interested into breeding them too though.

Over Weight Budgie Can't Fly
Do you know if it has flown before you bought him? Just to make sure, his wings aren't clipped are they? Try to get in contact with the previous owner and see if he flew before, it may be a genetic problem, or it could just be he just can't fly.

Budgerigar Calendar Competions
I'm sorry everyone else that entered for this month, but I have to vote mine, the others are so cute but I want at least one of mine in the calendar. Votes will stop on Thursday so we can get a lot of Christmas entries. Love the photo Robyn, however for other people if it is possible could we have them longer rather than wider as these are hard to put on nicely especially if they are very tall and very skinny.

Totally agree with the others, almost all of my budgies did that, except for one he is very out there though.

Budgerigar Calendar Competions
That's cute birdlove. Hello all, I was wondering, who would like Decembers picture to be Christmas related and who wouldn't? I am also putting some of the holidays on there like Christmas and New Years Eve. Just be aware that this calendar is made for and from Australia, so if there are wrong dates, you may need to change them your self if you live in another country. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Breeding Budgies
You could just take the parents away, if they are going to fledge. They may not be ready. My budgies constantly chirped sounding like they wanted out and the mother sat at the entrance but they fledged a few days later.

Newbie
It seems that Charlie is one of the most popular budgie names, I wasn't going to say I had a Charlie, but i did too (RIP both Charlies). He was my first and always my favorite, and no one could or can ever break the bond we had with each other.
