  2. Hi Breeding birds in a flock requires the number of boxes should be enough to give each hen a choice of at least of two.. Trouble will be the only out come when two hens like the same box... The sexuality of all creatures is subject to the same vagaries as us humans....B.J.
  3. Hi. Budgies don't build nests, so straw ect not needed. just a little sawdust is enough.. Read through the breeding, feeding & keeping posts on this site for good info....B.J.

  7. Hello. To anyone reading this thread. I have to admit that it is 30 yrs ago that I worked in the feed business so I have to concede that some thing might have changed sine then......B.J.
  8. Hello What she needs. is to be kept away from your face. What seems to be so cute now could cost you an eye from a miss-directed peck or kiss & It wont seem so cute when your busy....The bacteria in the human mouth can be harmful to a small bird. being a different species have no resistance to any germs we may be carrying. Teach her a game to play like the one below.....B.J. B,J's. HIDE & SEEK A simple bit of play enjoyed by all birds once they learn it. You will need a few plastic bottle tops. The trick is for you to hide a tiny piece of a favourite treat under one of the tops & encourage your bird to look for it. Your bird will enjoy knocking over the top to find the treat. When your pet is happy to knock over the one top for the treat, Add another couple of tops but don't let him see which you hide it under. After a few days most birds will knock over as many tops as it takes, to get to a favourite treat. Remember the smaller the treat, the longer the game will last...B.J.
  9. Hi A cheap but effective toy can be made from one of those plastic balls that contain a cheap child' s toy. You will find them in slot machines in or outside shops.. Throw away the toy inside & with a small nail burn several Millet size holes like a pepper pot. to play... You half fill it with millet seed put the two halves together. The bird learns that when he rolls the ball about seeds fall out. This will keep him amused.. You may have to show him how it works....B.J
  10. Hi To avoid problems Cover half the cage with a damp towel so the bird can take shade as it needs or wants to.so when you see the bird taking shade you will know its had enough. Then you don't have to worry is the sun too hot or have you left it out too long....B.J.

  13. Hello Several years ago I bought 4 special cock budgies (brothers). I put them in an aviary with 8 unrelated hens & 12 nest boxes. Hens squabble over boxes not mates. Cocks are quite happy to service any willing hen. While his first choice is busy. From these pairings, I got around 30 hens & out of these I chose 8 of those that looked most like their fathers. The next season I paired in separate cages 2 hens with 1 cock. So I could ring chicks for I.D. purposes. Now I had all the specials I needed... The no-no's of breeding close relatives comes from the fear of multiplying faults. Common sense is not confined to experts.....B.J.
  14. Got to agree with the Nadene. Except maybe the mirror bit, if you take his mirror. He'll find something else You say he's out for an hour fly time Perhaps a little training to occupy his time energy & brain power should help....B.J.
  15. Hi Obviously you can't get him to a vet or you wouldn't be asking... Do you know if it's broken or just hurt.?? Either way if no Vet then leave it. Birds are very resilient. If the worst happens she should be able to manage on one leg...B.J.
  16. Hi In Cage & Aviary Birds week 29 Aug2012. Short piece with photo of budgies raising cockatiel chicks successfully. From eggs to sticks...B.J.
  17. Hi The fact that young hens have a tinge of blue gives, shopkeepers a chance to palm them off as cocks. Judging by your birds general appearance I would guess it a hen You'll find out for sure when it moults out......B.J.
  18. Hi Monica. If your going to teach a budgie. A young one is your best bet. Unfortunately budgies are very hard to sex, before their first moult unless you get them from a breeder who's breeding sex linked crosses ie albino's, etc Shop bought babies don't come with a sex guarantee no matter what they say. Either way I suggest you only get one bird, easier all round to manage. Read up the training posts while your looking. Please don't buy the scruffiest bird cos you feel sorry for him.......B.j
  19. Hi Lov3r couldn't help but notice your birds diet is a little restricted. They need more variety to ensure they get all vitamins & minerals they need. Check out the feed posts for more info asap. B.J

  23. Hi Now that's what I call a question..... If that's your vets diagnosis. How can we who haven't examined your bird contradict his advice. I'm sure your vets not trying to rip you off........B.J.
  24. Hi When you order your rings. You have to tell them what birds there for. They will send you the right size. See adverts in bird mags....B.J.
