Am I Doing Something Wrong?
For the past couple of days Dalek has been trying to escape his cage. He has heaps of toys and I let him out for a fly around my room but when ever I put him back in to his cage he tries to open the door and escape again and then sits up on his perch quietly. I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to get him used to being in the cage longer as I can't keep taking him out now i have to deal with school work again.

Grapes....?
He already has some millet spray in his cage and he absoluetly loves it! If you try and take it out to move it he'll sit on it and chirp. xD

My New Budgie Dalek
Thanks. It was the last one in the pet shop. LOL I brought it about three weeks before he was ready to come out of the aviary and in to my room. xDD I'm just a little upset as there is no such thing as a purple budgie. because that would be awesome. LOL

Grapes....?
I was wondering if I'm allowed to give my budgie grapes as a treat. And if I can't is there anything else I can give him as treats?

Smartest Little Guy Ever!
Today I went out with my mum and dad for the morning to get some toys for Dalek. In his cage he only had a plain ring to play with today. I came home this afternoon and found his whole cage desroyed, he had thrown food everywhere all over my desk and was innocently hanging upside down in the corner waiting for me to give him a belly rub. He has only been in this cage for two days and he already knows which three doors open and is now trying to figure out how to get them to open so he can have his freedom. LOL He loves to play chase around my room, the first time he started it I didn't want to chase him because I thought it would scare him, but then i saw the other budgies doing it, and if I stopped he would sit on top of my curtain rod and chirp loudly until I came near him and then he'd fly away. I am just shocked at how intelligent he really is, after having chickens I think i gave up all hope of an intelligent bird. LOL

What's On The Bottom Of Your Cage?
Throw away your sand sheets. They arent needed for budgies and can indeed harm them if ingested. they can also add to feet issues. As far as wearing down nails goes, that petshop blurb written on packets. Normal branches are good enough. A budgies nails and beak will only grow out of size and shape and control if it has a health issue causing the growth. No sandsheets or sandpaper in my aviaries and on their perches and none of my birds have long nails or beaks Oh gosh! I didn't know that. Damn that pet shop lady for lying to me! What do you recommend instead? I really don't want to put the grate in because without it gives him more room to play around in.

Should I Buy A Cover?
Thanks so much Elly. I'll hunt around the op shops and my mums linnen closet for an old sheet. Don't want him getting hurt because the towel sagged during the night!

Should I Buy A Cover?
I have heard a lot of people saying that you need to buy or make a cover for your budgie's cage if you have them inside. I hae just brought Dalek in from the main aviary in to a nice cage in my room. Tonight I have a towel over the cage to make him feel a little safer because the front of our aviary has a tarp over it to stop cats getting on the wire and scaring the budgies. I am wondering if having a cover on the budgie is needed and if so, what kind of things can you use? PS: Sorry if I put this in the wrong section.

Red Budgie
That is one DEMONIC budgie! LOL I am very sad that the blackfaces died out, seeing the pictures of them I was like 'One of them would look lovely in our aviary."

What's On The Bottom Of Your Cage?
In my cage that I have set up for Dalek, I took the grate out and lined the pull out tray with some sand sheets I brought at Coles and on top of the sand sheets I put a little bit of shavings that we use for our baby chicks in their boxes. Dalek seems to love it and it's really simple to clean as I just pull the tray out, tip out the shavings and put soem more in and replace the sand sheets with new ones when they wear down. They are like really soft sand paper so it helps keeps the budgies nails trimmed.

New Budgie Owner To Forum
Hi, I have noticed the same thing with my budgie Dalek, since he's been in the cage he's been hiding in the top corner all puffed up and then ventures down to the bottom. I also know that the birds we have in the aviary do the same thing. And there is always a fight for the corner spots. Rather cute when you wake up in the morning to see them all half asleep in the corners. LOL

My New Budgie Dalek
Thanks. At the moment i'm sitting here with my laptop set up on my desk in front of his cage and he's happily listening to Fall Out Boy with me. Seems he has good music taste. LOL At the moment he's favourite thing to do in his cage is hang upside down from the roof and get a belly rub.

Is My Baby Dalek A Boy Or Girl?
Mum and I are wondering if anyone can tell us if Dalek is a boy or girl. He has just come out of the aviary and sat patiently on my finger while mum took the photos. He is a very mellow budgie and doesn't bite. He nipped me twice and then was like 'Meh *pose*' Man I hate the last image. LOL!!! I have two chins.

My New Budgie Dalek
This is my beautiful little baby budgie that I have named Dalek. I am hoping it is a boy and we've been reading what people have said and are pretty sure he is a boy. He doesn't bite, he's mellow as all heck and he has a purple nose with no white on it. But I just feel like showing him off cause he's my first real pet apart from fish. LOL

Thank you so much. We will handle them when we go in to the avairy and let dad continue doing what he's doing.

Some Advice Please.
Hello, we have a flight avairy and our birds paired up and had four babies. We took two of the babies out and put them in a different cage when we thought they could come out and they didn't eat or drink anything so we put them back in to be cared for by their father. I want to take one of the budgies and tame it and I am wondering if there is any signs that I can look out for to show that the budgie is ready to come out and be tamed to become my pet. At the moment they are flying around freely in the avairy (even if they can only fly short distances) and they are still being fed by their dad, is that normal or should we take them off the parents like you do cows to stop them from feeding from the parent? :/ I am very confused and would love some help and advice please so I can tell my parents and to make sure that we do nothing that is going to potentially be harmful to the birds.

I would love to tame them, but if it is better for them to be left in the flock, then I might leave them in there.

Please Help Me!
Thank you so much Kaz. Our babies were eating but we decided to put them back in to the flight aviary, we were worried that they weren't really ready. And when we did put them back in, they flew straight out of the nesting box and their dad took over and fed them. So we are letting him look after them for now. Do you have any tips for us so we know when they are ready to come in to a nursery cage, or are we able to keep them in the flight aviary?

Please Help Me!
Hello, my family and I have an aviery with budgies in it, two of our budgies decided to pair up and breed. We have only just taken two of the chicks out of the nest and put them in to a nursery cage last night. They are not drinking water and it is a really hot day. Do you have any tips on how to get the budgies to drink water? At the moment the only way I am getting it done is by putting droplets of water on my finger and letting them bite it off me, but i'm scared that is going to teach them to bite me, and I really don't want that. :/ Please help!
