Pink Budgie Nest 2012
Hi Maddy, Budgerigar breeding is no easy task, and full of Heart breaks. You might find its a timing issue , because if your hens are laying then you have to look at the cock birds. I have 22 cabinets down , 4 did not lay, the rest laid, of these 5 have fertile eggs, now I need all these eggs to hatch if im to make anything of this round, but I can bet that wont happen. Keep your chin up , throw the eggs , pluck the vents and hope for the best in the second round. Also I dont think the weather we are having here at the moment is helping, the birds just dont seem to be moulting properly, and so not coming into full condition.

Coccidiosis
So in the end what happened was , we had some terrible weather extreme hot then cold , smashed the recovery with some of the birds , I took them off Baycox as some birds just werent responding and put them back onto a double strength Sulfur in the water for 3 days. So all was well let 5 birds go last weekend in the flights , Kept another 10 in the house this week due to the extreme weather changes , all are fine and will go into the flights tomorrow. Unfortunately lost 2 more due to megabac. Renee the only way I work out if internal damage is done is by breeding the birds , under breeding stress you find the weak birds . I used a product called turbobooster on the seed , fed continually this will put weight back onto the birds. Great for recovery.

Coccidiosis
Lost two today Renee. But I also took two out of the nappy cage and put back in aviary . Some look great , some not. They are getting seed but in a feeder jar so there is less contamination as sick birds like to sit in the feed bowls. They are getting millet sprays every day , the real sick ones (3) are getting crop feed twice a day. Aviary floor is checked and any droippings are dusted over with Lime. Tomorrow is the last day of meds, then they will go onto mulit vitamin and probiotics.

Coccidiosis
Thanks for the tip TAZ , I have a Map Gas tourch I use for bathroom renovations, will give it a go. No I think that is for Megabacteria. I know many breeders give their birds lemons but it is the acid content that counts and some oranges have more than others, don't they? I would have thought bitter oranges were best - though I'm only speculating. Matt, how is it going today? Hi Renee, Lost one more today, 2 more dont look good, Problem is they have lost alot of weight and who knows what internal organs are damaged, But not giving up. All birds in aviary seem okay for now , all got millet sprays to make sure they are eating and are all now on a course of antibiotics to hold any secondary infections at bay . It was Hot here today and humid tonight, very still and im right on the coast , so all birds would have got a good dose of meds today. On the flip side 3 chicks hatched today . Garden lime is basically calcium carbonate depending on what and where you buy , so safe to use . It must be the white fluffy powder type, I buy Yates garden lime. Brickies lime or Hydrated lime is garden lime heated to an extreme temperature which changes the molicular structure of the lime , so dont use this for the birds.

Coccidiosis
Thanks , My fingers are crossed. I have 7 bad ones up in the house , all got crop feed with meds and food twice today Caught up every aviary bird and assessed each one today , Some looked good went into a separate flight . this flight was cleaned sprayed and garden lime put all over the floor. Baycox in water. Others that looked a bit off , signs of dropping changes and stained vent feathers went into a different flight that was cleaned and sprayed and garden lime put over the floor. Baycox in water. Then the last 12 just dont look right to me , so they were plucked slightly, put into a nappy cage with a fall through bottom for the droppings and Baycox in water.

Coccidiosis
Well it is entirely my fault , No new birds for over 18 months. I believe since I had it the first time there is a higher chance of getting it again, its funny how you can breed birds for over 15 years or more and never had a disease like this, until its brought into your aviary by an outcross. Last monday it was really hot here, thunderstorm Monday night , hot and humid than all week, on night was 20 degrees over night. This is what triggered the bug. Unfortunately I was very busy with work and not on the ball .

Trichomoniasis In Budgerigars
When you buy meds from Rob Marshall he supplies 1 and 5 gram teaspoons. Its one Teaspoon, which is 4grams to 2 litres of water. No Matt, I believe you are mistaken. The turbosole jar comes with a white 1 gram teaspoon. If indeed the dosis was 4 grams per 2 liters then the instructions would be 4 teaspoons per 2 Liters. But it is not. Here is what is says in the online book regarding Canker - Trichomoniasis (Canker) Outbreak An immediate emergency response is required when canker (Trichomoniasis) is suspected as the cause of deaths in a crowded young bird flight (refer to Chapter 30 pages 392-395 & figure 30k: "The Budgerigar" book). Exact Instructions for Canker Outbreak Individual Bird Treatment Isolate and treat all sick birds in heated hospital cage(s). Premix 1 level teaspoon of Turbosole into 4 litre of warm water and use this water to prepare the Emergency Rescue Formula as per normal Emergency First Aid instructions (refer to Chapter 19 pages 243 figure 19b: "The Budgerigar" book). Updated Emergency Rescue Formula Ingredients: This recipe is enough for 4 birds. Adjust the quantities accordingly for greater numbers of birds. 5 teaspoons ER powder 2 drops Quik-gel 10 mls of warmed Turbosole Working Solution made from mixing 1 level teaspoon (3 grams) of Turbosole into 2 litre of hot water. 1 crushed Cank-R-tab dissolved into 1nl of water. Crop feed each sick bird 2-3mls of this Emergency Rescue Formula each 8 hours for 3 days or until they are eating well. Birds that fail to respond within 72 hours will not recover sufficiently to breed again. Flock Treatment
Add Turbosole (1 teaspoon per 4 litre) and Quick-gel (1mls per litre) into the drinking water of the sick birds in the hospital cage and also into the drinking water of all flights. Make this up fresh daily for 5 days. Follow a full Breeding Health Programme for 6 weeks using KD as an acid water cleanser (see Chapter 31 pages 403: "The Budgerigar" book).
Expect more birds in the flights to become sick over the next 2 days and remove these to the hospital cage for treatment.
Disinfect water containers using KD each day for 1 week then weekly for 3 months.
Move recovered sick birds to holding cages for observation. They should stay here for 3 weeks before returning to flights. Here they must receive Turbobooster E-powder and F-vite to dry seed mix daily and Turbosole for three consecutive days (followed by Quik-gel (2ml/500ml) for 3 days) each week for 3 weeks. All other birds in the flights should receive a similar treatment but they start one month after the first course of treatment.
Follow-up treatments using Turbosole (1teaspoon into 4 litres) are required to prevent reinfections and should be given when canker outbreaks are more likely to occur. Critical months for canker outbreaks are January and August. Prevention starts by administering a 5 day long course of Turbosole each 3 months to coincide with January and August treatments. Well I just got it out of the fridge and it says Budgies and parrots, 4 grams to 2 litres , I think you need to check the spoon sizes.

Are Pine Cones Safe?
Hi Budgie Gal, those pictures in that link are mine , I dont do anything to the pine cones , I pick up the green ones on the ground , put them in the sun to open and dry , then through them in the cage.

Trichomoniasis In Budgerigars
Turbosole for Canker Give 1 teaspoon (1gram) into 2 Liters of water for 5 days. Refer to page 43-46 of the Budgerigar Medicine Book by Rob Marshall The average teaspoon is usually more than one gram....is turbosole lighter than most meds ? Its one Teaspoon, which is 4grams to 2 litres of water. Also who is Sally O'Dwyer ?
