Pink Budgie Nest 2012
Well some of the, are still laying (4 extras today spread out amongst 4 nests) so I think i might just be jumping the gun a bit. I have a hunch that the nest with the fertile ones, the hen started sitting straight away, hence why it's the only one...just a theory

Pink Budgie Nest 2012
Thanks Robyn There are two more pairs in the cabinets now, which brings the total to 9 So the pairs are: Cage #1 YF Dominent Pied cock x YF Cinnamon Hen Cage #2 Green Opaline cock x Normal Cobalt Hen (0 eggs) Cage #3 Normal Cobalt cock x Cinnamon Grey Green Hen Cage #5 DF spangle cock x Blue Dominent Pied Hen = (2 eggs) Cage #6 Grey Green Opaline cock x Sky Normal Hen = (3 eggs) Cage #7 Grey Opaline cock x Green Cinnamon Hen = (3 eggs, 2 fertile) Cage #9 Cobalt cock x Grey Cinnamon Hen = (0 eggs) Cage #10 Violet Spangle cock x Grey Cinnamon Spangle Hen = (2 eggs) Cage #11 Green Opaline cock x Albino hen = (2 eggs) I haven't yet filled the bottom 3 (hence the missing numbers). There is nothing wrong with them, its just a pain to get down there lol But I will only fill them if I need to. So at the moment there are quite a few pairs with eggs, but no sign of fertility. Its getting me a little worried as pairs 5, 6, and 7 laid there's around the same time. I will give them a little longer though. But so far only the one nest has fertile, so I'll see what happens

Pink Budgie Nest 2012
Update on pairs. Cage #2 Green Opaline cock x Normal Cobalt Hen = Hen has been inside box and kicked out a bunch of shavings, but no sign of an egg yet. Cage #5 DF spangle cock x Blue Dominent Pied Hen = 2 eggs, no sign of fertility yet. Cage #6 Grey Green Opaline cock x Sky Normal Hen = 3 eggs, no sign of fertility yet Cage #7 Grey Opaline cock x Green Cinnamon Hen = 3 eggs, two fertile Cage #9 Cobalt cock x Grey Cinnamon Hen = Hen has been sitting in the nest the last couple of days like she has eggs, yet there are none Cage #10 Violet Spangle cock x Grey Cinnamon Spangle Hen = 2 eggs, no sign of fertility yet Cage #11 Green Opaline cock x Albino hen = 1 egg, no sign of fertility yet. This means that even though I only know of two fertile eggs so far, this breeding round is going about 1000 times better than the last just by having eggs lol

Hi Guys :)
This picture is very bright, so its hard to determine male or female. From this picture it looks female, but the even colour could suggest male. Is there a chance of taking a photo in natural light (without being super bright) and without a flash?

Boys Or Girls?
They both look male to me

Killing Eggs?
Agree with Bird Junky. Most likely they've done it either by accident or on purpose, but you will never know.

Question About New Budgie
You should only have to clip his wings if necessary. Like if you let him out a lot and he tends to crash. But I would do the cage move first, get him used to that, then clip his wings

What Kind Of Chicks Can These Budgies Produce?
Haha looks like you've had quite a few problems with that one's gender lol Don't worry, we've all been there So you're getting Male from this forum, and Female from another..... I'm going to stay out of this one lol
-
Boy 'oh' Budgie
Why do you need help? There is nothing physically wrong with your birds. It's like twisted said (sort of lol) There could be two people, one with light legs and one with dark...but they're still people. Read up on the different varieties of budgies and it will all become clear

What Kind Of Chicks Can These Budgies Produce?
I see where Kaz is coming from and it was one of my first thoughts too. You didn't say when you were going to pair them, you just said you were going to. Look at it from Kaz's perspective, she's had to convince countless people to do right by their birds instead of themselves, she was just nipping this one in the butt early lol Also, I'm not sure, but Winter kind of looks like a girl with all that blue around the nostrils

T.v. Commercials
I'm always seeing commercials to visit other countries, its just a strategy they use to boost tourism in different places. I can't say that I've seen one specifically for Canada lately, but I'm sure I have in the past at some time or another

How Old Are Baby Budgies When Sold In Pet Shops?
Gum tree is really good for that kind of thing. Also try the wanted to buy section in the forum, you might get lucky

Building An Aviary
Filling a hollow log with dirt can be harmful as it can grow bacteria. And if they are going to destroy the plants as quick as they do, then you will have to replace them every week. Which could amount to a lot of money

How Old Are Baby Budgies When Sold In Pet Shops?
Be careful when looking for 'baby' budgies in pet shops as owners tend to tell you what you want in order to sell them. You want and try to get a baby that has an 'unbroken cap' which means it hasn't gone through its first moult yet and it is under 3 months old. I would suggest finding an actual breeder rather than a pet shop, as they are going to be more honest with you about a birds age. They will also be healthier, and sometimes, already used to being handled.

Pink Budgie Nest 2012
New pair put down, Cage #11 Green Opaline cock x Albino hen I have tried breeding this cock before and he fertilised 100% of the eggs...it was just unfortunate that the hen knocked the eggs around and killed them So I'm hoping he has as much success this time The albino hen, as well as the other birds in the second quarantine cage, came from R. Waddington. He put them on Doccycyclene (sorry if I spelt it wrong) before I picked them up. So they are all on a probotic at the moment. The hen just has hers in the breeding cabinet

Pink Budgie Nest Renovations
Thank you finnie Yes I was limited my space when the garden was redone and my parents didn't want seed, feathers, and little grass plants growing all about. Also, the previous quarantine spot was also restricted as it was my dads shed and we are still cleaning out the seed lol But I expressed my concerns about the 5 metre rule to my club members, and quite a few of them were limited on space too. They said that they haven't had problems as long as the new birds and old birds don't share water, food, and feed each other etc

Pink Budgie Nest Renovations
Yea I am aware of that finnie, and there isn't anywhere else I can put them...but due to my massive loss of birds, the ones in there at the moment arent my best. My main breeding plans involve the new ones, and their quarantine is almost over ( it sounds careless, but I did time it )

Fallen Into Shadow
Whoever has watched Lord of the Rings will get the title... But I lost my dear boy Gandalf a few days ago. Sad stuff. I have lost quite a few birds lately, but Gandalf was special I thought he deserved a proper mention. Unlike other birds I have lost, he is now buried under the gum tree in my backyard, a fitting resting place. R.I.P Gandalf

Berocca
I wouldn't because it is designed for human consumption not birds. It would probably have additives in it to make it safe for us and give it a taste, so its probably not ideal for them. There are plenty of multivitamins you can find specifically for birds though.

Pink Budgie Nest Renovations
Yep I know what double wiring is and its not needed. It was funny today though because I caught a male on one side trying desperately to feed a female on the other side, with a bit of success

Pink Budgie Nest 2012
Now that I am back into breeding, I have decided to have another crack at a breeding journal. My last one ran dry as the only two chicks produced for that season died. Not only that, but after that particular season I had about half of my good birds kick the bucket, which sent me into a little 'I'm not breeding anymore' spiral. I knew it would pass though. So I'm hoping my new setup will favour me with better results. This is what I have so far: Cage #5 DF spangle cock x Blue Dominent Pied Hen Cage #6 Grey Green Opaline cock x Sky Normal Hen Cage #7 Grey Opaline cock x Green Cinnamon Hen Cage #9 Cobalt cock x Grey Cinnamon Hen Cage #10 Violet Spangle cock x Grey Cinnamon Spangle Hen I have plans for more pairs, I am just waiting for them to come into condition a little more. I also have 11 new birds ready to be put out once they are free from quarantine I have already planned which bird is going where and I'm excited to get started. The albino hen is going with a split Lutino cock I have which should be interesting as she is my only albino

Pink Budgie Nest Renovations
Well, after all this time (and inactivity) I have finally gotten my aviary and bird room up and running. Its cleaned and fairly organised enough now that I don't feel ashamed to share photos. My camera had some over exposure problems in the first photos but I fixed it by the last two. Getting the sleepers down And a big jump to the finished thing Inside the bird room And inside the aviary (now two parts) I have a heap more space now, I can actually use a broom (thats how cramped it was before. I just need to figure out how to give the second aviary part (the one that now has my hens in it) some more perches or a tree branch without sacrificing space. Figuring out an alternative for the first part would be great too as I need to duck around it to catch anyone. The shelf/table in the middle of the aviary is two parts connected through the wire and supported by the legs. The old setup the shelf got rained on a lot and the wood was starting to rot. The Bird room has the 12 cabinets and some space between them and the side of the shed where I am currently storing some wire and mesh. The white cabinets I made are now my storage shelves for food dishes, medicine, writing implements etc. Next to that is the three tier cage frame where new birds are kept (I know the rule about 5 metres but it is not possible in this case). I'm in the process of cleaning out the cabinets which is why there is nest boxes on the ground. So this is what all my hard work has come up with as my new set up
