ah I see Well if you do get some eggs and chicks out of these guys, expect 50% spangles and 50% normals Also, if your hen had 2 green parents and your cock had 2 blue parents, then you will get all greens masking blue. If your hen had a blue parent you'll get 50% blue and 50% green masking blue.

Nesting Material
Its a good idea. It keeps the eggs from rolling around a lot, and also keeps the chicks warmer when they hatch. Depending on what you use it can help absorb some of the chicks waste so that less of it gets stuck on them. Some hens like to chuck every last bit out of the nest box before they lay, and you usually just let them go. But when the chicks hatch its a good idea to put some in there, as by then the hen will be too occupied to throw it out anymore. The most popular type is wood shavings, but I hear of others using rolled oats, like the type you'd find in the grocery store.

Fertile Eggs
That depends. Is the yellow budgie a Double Factor spangle or a Lutino? And if its a lutino, is it the cock or hen?

Pink Budgie Nest 2011
I know how you guys love pictures of little fluffy babies.... This is the only chick in the cinnamon spangle and DF spangle nest. He/she has some yellow feathers coming through so I'm hoping for another DF This is my Grey hen and YF Dom pied opaline nest. This hen won't let me out of her sights which is why I had to take the picture with them still inside the nest. Its also why the nest is not been cleaned yet lol (she bites) But I did manage to ring them without having blood drawn so thats an achievement right there The oldest chick has clear flights so it looks like a Dom pied. The younger one has dark flights so it will be a normal. Both are blue based birds by the look of it, but whether they are grey or blue I'm yet to find out. I'm hoping I'll get a YF out of this lot. Once I'm finished my renovations I have plans to use this green hen. She's only young (purple ringer) but not too young...there is no way I'm risking her life. I got her for free from the chairman of my local club, as well as 2 cocks and another hen of lesser quality ( but good none the less) I want to pair her to the grey green cock directly beneath her. I got him from the local pet shop, so I'm happy with him

Pink Budgie Nest Renovations
I managed to finish the flight part today which made me feel good. The door used to be on this side. Its not the neatest job in the world but its budgie safe which is the most important thing. And now the door is on this side. This is where the shed will join, so that the door opens on the inside, making a safety cage of sorts. That big piece of ugly plastic is there to keep the rain out. When it looks like the weather is going to go bad on me I attach the loose corner to the roof. But once the shed is connected that won't be a problem anymore. This was before I cleaned up as you can see, the tools are still lying around. I gotta say I love being a handy woman

I Have An Egg!
Thats not good. But not blame yourself, you didn't know they would take so much interest in the hollow log, it wasn't intentional But in the wild that is what budgies use to nest, so I think their natural instinct just took over. I would not put that back in as hens can kill each other over a nesting spot. Try getting some shell grit to put in a dish in the aviary to help with calcium. This is probably a sign that your birds are not getting enough. If you deal with it now, then if another hen thinks its a good idea to lay an egg she'll be stocked up Again I'm really sorry about your hen, it is upsetting when things like this happen (I had two hens die within a week of each other not long ago) But They always provide a learning curve for us.

Yikes, at least black house spiders are big but harmless The weather took a turn for the worst today so I won't get to take pictures or work more on it

Fertile Eggs
How long has it been since they were laid nathan? Is the hen sitting on them? If by the 10 day mark they show no red or darkness than I usually get rid of them. But give them that much time as they only start developing if the hen has been sitting on them. When I first started out this was my main reference for when I was candling http://birdys-stirling.webs.com/fertilityofbudgieeggs.htm They are nice clear pictures and show you the first signs of a fertile egg

Pink Budgie Nest Renovations
Yea the spider dance is not a proud moment I have to look around to make sure no one is watching over the fence lol Thats a good idea, I have some of that liquidator. I had no idea it worked on regular creepy crawlies. That will definitely be the first thing to do once this is all finished I can guarantee you that lol Huntsman's are the worst. They just like to crawl on you, plus they're ugly little buggers. Me and my mum have this habit of spraying them so much that they move and there is a clear spider outline on the floor/wall (I think I may get my spider love from her)

Pink Budgie Nest Renovations
I'm working on expanding the Pink Budgie nest which is exciting. I picked up a 2.3 x 2.3 shed from the hardware store and its going to add onto my flight as a breeding room. So I will have two flights and a whole lot of space to store my **** lol So today, I worked on moving the door from the front, to the side, so that it will open up inside the shed. Took me all day as well as quite a few cuts on my hands from the wire, but it looks good. Just needs a few more things to budgie proof it. However, I need to be more diligent when it comes to the gaps in the metal framing as I had 3 spiders come out at me during the demolition process. I even found some nice pictures to share with you all (links because they are SOOOOOO not budgies lol) Black house spider Badumna_insignis_F0862.jpg Netcasting Spider Deinopsis_subrufa_F1688.jpg Sac Spider Clubiona_ZZ143_F1607.jpg As you can imagine, coming across these lovelies stalled my work on the aviary as I would do the spider dance and make a wild dash for the bug spray, then give it a good 10 mins before going back in (I don't cope well with spiders) So I've come to the solution to buy a whole can of surface spray to keep inside the aviary and spray it every week to keep out the nasties lol It wouldn't of been so bad, had these spiders not come out of places I was holding onto at the time *shudders* But once the flight part is done I will take some shots to put up. I still need to put down the foundation for the shed, but to me this is the hard part. So it will be out of the way

Pink Budgie Nest 2011
Just a quick update (sorry no pictures yet ) Pair #3 still has their little chick. Growing well, peeping away. They also have 2 eggs that are fertile, laid about 3 days before the pinky hatched. I'm not expecting them to hatch as they have a while to go, and I did contemplate fostering out the chick. However, the only other pair available was Pair #6, and I have never bred with that hen before (no has anybody) so I wanted to make sure she saw the job through to the end before I trust her with another hens chick Pair #6 has two babies now. Rung the oldest today. The oldest is looking like an opaline. Pair #1 was disbanded by me as the hen ate all of her eggs and I was just getting frustrated with her. I know you can fix it, but she's really not that good of a hen to waste my time with Pair #4 has 4 eggs, 3 are looking fertile which is fantastic. And Pair #7 has nothing since I took out their eggs

The Difference
It is my understanding that fallows are just cinnamon budgies with red eyes, while lacewings are a combination of lutino/albino and cinnamon, so that are mostly white or yellow with pale cinnamon markings.

Sexing Lutino
Thats a tough one isn't it. From the small preview I'd say female, but when you click on them you see some dark purple there. But I'm going to stick with one and say female
