  2. Hi

Hi and Welcome! "Commander Tucker," I love it! (not "Trip"? lol) You cannot blame yourself for the little hatchling; after all, if breeding goes well you will have to check the babies every day and put them back and normally the mother will waste no time checking them and feeding them upon their return to the nest.
  3. Hi, and Welcome! I hope you post pictures of your pair soon. I was in a *slightly* similar situation of having pet birds that bonded. I had them for two years before putting in a nest box. Prior to putting in the nest box I tried to research thoroughly to prepare myself; even so, I'm sorry I didn't find this forum first, so you are in the right place!! I am very, very fortunate that everything went well and we have 5 gorgeous happy playful youngsters.... BUT there are so many things that can go wrong so the best advice is to take advantage of the FAQ and all the good information you'll find there.
  4. Mr. Carrot Face is priceless! lol
  5. No advice or info for you, just wanted to say he is adorable... and very lucky to have you as his best pal after his early trauma!
  6. Grate the carrot on to a large flat plate, finesliced some spinach/silver beet, mix through, mash a boiled egg and mix through, add the corn and sprinkle birdseed over it. They will eat it. Feed early morning or at 4 pmish .....their natural feeding times. I give a similar mixture (except not corn every day). I used to give it first thing in the morning, but I find they "dig in" much better after they've had their afternoon airing and come back to the cage. It's different for you aviary folks, but mine like to come back to something yummy in the cage after flying around like maniacs.
  7. Congratulations, I got such a kick out of that photo!!
  8. Fantastic! It's clear you love your photo models :happy-dancing:

  10. Adorable! The fledgelings did/do the same thing with the ladder, especially to nibble on the feet of whoever learned how to get to the top rung!!
  11. Oh my. Do you have natural branches?... I'd worry if she fashions a tiny whip. I hope he has a safe word!

  13. What beauties ... great to scroll through the "then and now" photos, without the waiting!

animal_luver I use this bird bath... Lucy is the brave one taking a first dip. For first inspection I think it helped to have it right next to the perch as Horton is very "cautious" shall we say. While dad was in with the 6-8-week-old chicks I put one in their cage on a hot day, with water barely covering the bottom. After dad showed them how, they fought over a chance to jump in and walk around. But I did remove it after 10 minutes or so.
  15. My son names all our pets (except our rescue Aussie, Sarah, who came pre-named, lol). But for just the budgies: Horton = from the Dr. Seuss books Lucy = from "I Love Lucy" one of his fave shows and their babies: Nibbler = direct copy from Nibbler the Rally Bird, a little budgie that says "Let's Go Mets!" on a Mets blog (scroll down to hear it! http://brooklynmetfan.com/ ) Simon = for Simon Pegg Stewart = for Jon Stewart Colbert = for Stephen Colbert Xena = for the youngest, who was such a little fighter in the nest!
  16. Good for Toshiro!
  17. There are some great ideas here! I plan on using some of these ideas to add to a cage-top jungle gym I made last night (son is kind of "over" the rods & spools thing, lol) .... short video of it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMFvuHRzgrk http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v317/wanda23/junglegym.jpg
  18. I'm sorry about your babies, I was wondering why the sad face in your profile. I hope things turn out well for Sunny and Butter, that Butter is quite the handsome fella!
  19. haha, that's cute!
  20. Thanks nubbly5, very interesting! I'll just keep an eye on him then ... must stop hovering! lol

    how lovely
  22. Thanks for responding, I'm ashamed to say I don't know!!! I don't have one decent picture of his cere going back 2 years! I think I should relax and stop being so paranoid then.............
  23. Hi, dad has taken over with the 5-to-6-week chickees since last week and mom is in a separate cage now. Is it okay for the blue in his cere to be so clearly demarcated like this? He gets seed, Kaytee pellets, spinach, millet, & Abba 92A mixed with grated carrot. There's cuttle bone & mineral block in there as well. He supplement-feeds only the youngest on a regular basis; he'll "oblige" the next 2 youngest once in a while. He's a good boy, active with a lovely temperament and not overly harsh on the discipline  Searched around but can't find a topic quite like this... the closest being the discussions about testicular cancer?
  24. Thanks nubbly5, I know--- I couldn't figure Simon out as he was so easy-going with his siblings (male?), and yet (before the separation) mom was singling him out and chasing him from any perch down to the cage floor (female?). The camera is just a Canon G6, a few years old now, but I set it to "macro" and also "burst" (when you depress the button and it shoots continuously) ... so I can get 5 or 6 shots in a row. For a few of the birds I can kind of see the nostrils breathing in successive shots! And you can see their irises checking you out up and down as your shooting, etc., pretty cool. It just raises your odds of getting at least ONE shot in better focus, right?
  25. Any news? I'm hoping the guy did "man up" after all...
