$15 Pet-Shop Bird
Hi, this was an old post but things seem to be about the same. Still only get $10.00 for birds, $5.00 for greens. Pet shop sell them for $30.00. Don't know what they have against green, if we don't breed the greens we don't get the splits, pied's, yellows etc. some of the pure greens are fantastic looking birds. I guess it's all down to what sells and what doesn't.

Budgie Died Suddenly?
Hi, sorry you lost your Charlie. It's very hard to say what it could have been. Sometimes they just "drop off the perch" so to speak. Even though he was only young there may have been some problem you couldn't see. Just keep an eye on your other birds in case it was anything sinister that caused it, that may affect your others. Keep a good look out for any signs of illness as they can mask it really well. Hopefully it was just a sad little death that just happened.

Blocked Vent
Sorry you lost her Paulie. It's a shame we can't save all of them.

New To Budgies, Can Someone Please Help Me Identify What Colors I Have
Wow, it didn't take them long to try it. Same with corn on the cob, I put it on the dish and stand back. Some have tried raw beetroo,t just cut in half and let them go for it, they usually look like they have been in a massacre but it wears off.

Blocked Vent
It may be she is egg bound Paulie, it is fairly rare apparently to have a constipated bird. It sounds like she may have some sort of problem that I think may need vet. advice on.

Clip Or Not To Clip Wings
I think it is a personal choice. Maybe you can leave pet in cage, while kids are in and out and only take it out when its "birdy time" when kids play with bird and stay inside while it is out of cage. Or only have bird free in one room with door closed so it can't escape while it's out of it's cage.

Is This Normal?
Sounds like your little one is a bit stressed, which is quite normal. I agree with the others just leave him to sit quietly and get used to his new surroundings, as long as he has food and water, that is all he needs at this point. Once he has settled he will be more active and feed, just keep it calm and quiet around him until he decides to start chattering etc.

New To Budgies, Can Someone Please Help Me Identify What Colors I Have
Hi, you may have to try several times before they will accept the new food. Mine love silver beet/spinach especially if I hose it first and leave it wet, they then try to bath on it as well. If they have been in dark sheds they may not have had access to direct sunlight, which they need for vitamin D I think it is, it's really important for them for breeding and general health. As her beak will continue to grow you may be able over time to get her beak into a more natural shape, it may reshape itself if she starts to chew on branches etc.

Pairing Question
First I would set up separate breeding cages, 1 pair per cage. Water seed etc. nest box. Add the hen you want to breed with, AFTER A FEW DAYS/WEEK , Pick out a cock bird that you think may make a good pair, add Cock bird to cage, wait to see if they are going to bond, MAKING SURE BOTH ARE IN BREEDING CONDITION AND AGE (12 MTHS OR OLDER). If after a few days they ignore each other you may have to swap birds and try again, they usually bond if it's one to one. Then let Mother Nature do her thing. Good luck.

Dead Chick
Hi Rhiannan, Maybe by hatching at night it may not have been covered by Mum and died from cold. Your 4 day old would have increased in size rapidly after hatching, hence the size difference. There are lots of things that could cause a death, it could have been exhausted from hatching got cold etc it's hard to say. Just keep an eye out for any more problems as others hatch. We all get the odd chick death or d.i.s. but usually it's the exception rather than the rule. Good luck with next 2 eggs. Just adding that if first chick is 4 days maybe 2nd was overdue or maybe one egg in between didn't hatch as they usually hatch in 2 day intervals.

Good Food And Food To Avoid
Avocado is toxic to budgerigars. Go to F.A.Q. (top left of page under picture of birds). Go to food and nutrition, then safe plants/food etc you will find a-z list of toxic/non toxic foods. Check this list before giving new foods as sometimes the least likely thing can be dangerous or fatal. In general, good seed mixture for budgerigars, cuttle-fish, calcium/Iodine bells for calcium, fresh veg's, on list e.g corn on cob, spinach/silver beet, carrots, tops as well. are just a few you can try. Millet sprays for a treat. Fresh water, clean cage, good food and company and you should have a contented little friend.

New To Budgies, Can Someone Please Help Me Identify What Colors I Have
Well done with the clipping job. She will have to be better able to eat now. I think I would give your new birds a drop of Ivamectin on back of neck, which should help clear up any worms etc they may be carrying. That should help them pick up, plus good seed and veg's etc. I would give them calcium/iodine bell or cuttlefish, shell grit etc. to help keep their beaks in trim, even a bit of tree branch, safe ones naturally. Does your white hen have red eyes or was it just the camera? I thought, if your hen will let you, if you had a really fine "rat tail file" you may be better able to shape her beak a bit better with that. Now you have trimmed it it may wear down itself with her able to chew on things a bit more. Keep us posted on how she goes.

One Budgie Cage
I agree place perch's so bird has to fly from one perch to the other (for exercise) not just shuffle along perch. Otherwise it looks great.

New To Budgies, Can Someone Please Help Me Identify What Colors I Have
Hi, I cannot give you accurate mutations either but some lovely birds. Did you quarantine your new birds away from your existing birds? This is most important to prevent any disease effecting your aviary. Although the breeder said your bird with misshapen beak is okay she doesn't look like a happy little bird I think a beak trim is in order asap. If you don't know any breeder e.g in your area who may know how to clip her beak, it would be a vet visit I'd say. It looks more like an overgrown lower beak, don't really think it's mites causing it.

Mess-Free Cage
Hi, Your picture of feeder looks like a great idea if you are only having one or 2 birds in a cage. The seed husk must be removed daily or it looks like they have heaps of seed but could be all husk and they can starve. The "messy" bit would be the seed husk if you can contain much of it in that type of feeder it should be okay. If you line the tray of your cage with newspaper it saves a lot of mess, you just remove it and replace with clean paper as needed. I'd clean cage at least once a week. It depends on how many birds etc if it looks messy give it a clean is the best advice. You will get some feathers when they moult but that's to be expected. Good luck on finding the right little bird if you decide to get one. (If you can stop at one)

Hi Everyone! I'm New And Look Forward To Learning Lots Fm You&
Hope this helps a bit. JG. Welcome to bbc. reading is the key to learning about everything on budgies. You should find anything you need to know in one section or another on here. Then it falls into place as you try your hand at breeding. Good luck, keep posting for answers if you get stumped on an issue. (We all do at some point)

Breeding Season
Lovely lot of chicks Budgie Lov3r. I think the cockatiel has an identity problem, great to see they are so compatable in the same aviary. Your violet y.faced cinnamon looks interesting, can you add more pics as they fledge ?

How Many Babies Can One Budgie Feed/ Can Budgie Raise Chicks Without M
Wow if she has 2 eggs already in 2 days she didn't waste time did she. I usually have mine in breeding cage for a week or two before any eggs turn up. If that's the case just add food etc for her and see if she is going to incubate eggs or not. She could lay more yet if she's in a cycle. I have read that one mating is enough to fertilize a clutch so you just don't know. Keep posting as you go, it could go either way. Make a note of dates so you know when eggs are due (18 days after they're laid usually in 2 day intervals) If possible I'd mark each egg so you know which are the oldest etc. first couple may be fertile/or not but next ones could be/or not. Trial and error at this stage I'd say. Good luck with her. Just to add I would not try to get another bird at this stage as they wouldn't be bonded etc. maybe your cock bird may be found with a lot of luck.

Found
She looks like a mature bird not a chick, she also looks in good health so maybe she got out in a storm or wind etc. if you can't find her family maybe Smokie would like her in his. l.o.l. good luck either way.

First Ino Chicks!
They are pretty tough little things, I have fixed a broken leg before so if it's just bruised and swollen it should go down after a few days, if skin is broken i'd maybe treat it with betadine e.g. just in case. Photo's sound good.
