Learning Genetics - Where Would You Start?
Hi, as a complete novice at genetics, if you read through the "pinned" articles at the beginning of this forum. Mutations/Varieties/genetics. There is a wealth of information within those topics. I'd start there. I breed pet types so haven't delved into genetics much.It gets very involved so if you can grasp the basics, you could work up from there.Good luck hope you get further into it than I have as yet. L.O.L

Sick Budgie
Good news, fingers crossed for him. Did she say what she thought it was? Hope it's not a contagious to your other birds.
-
Sick Budgie
Put him under a lamp for warmth, do you have any meds like Ivamectin? It could be air sac mites or some other infection, If you have the Ivamectin one drop behind head. You will have to act quickly to save him, hope you can find a AVIAN vet for him or see what others advise. Do you have cement floor in Aviary or soil?

Carrots
For my aviary I just pull a carrot out of the garden, soil and all, leave the tops on and my birds go nuts over it chewing the whole thing to pieces. I have one yellow pied who has a huge orange bib when she's finished, she loves it. If I use bought carrots I remove tops wash them in case of any pesticides etc. then give them to the birds whole.

Feather Mites?
It's hard to tell from picture. are you sure he just isn't moulting? If you look under f.a.q. you should find something on feather mites etc.

First Time Breeding
It should be around 18 days from when egg is laid to hatching. After 5 days or so WITHOUT handling egg, (you could addle eggs) get a small torch and shine light from back or side of egg if it's fertile you can see a pinky look with tiny veins starting to appear. Fertile eggs will appear a solid white while infertile eggs stay a clear pinky look. If she has 2 eggs she may lay more as they lay every 2 days, if your not sure when she laid 1st egg I'd check after a couple more days.

Baby Budgie Beak Problem
It's a bit hard to tell what problem may be. Can you get a picture of it? I had an older bird who's lower beak somehow became detached and I didn't notice anything until it died, on checking I think poor thing starved because of it. I don't know what happened it must have got caught somehow I think. Are you sure crack is in beak itself? Maybe parents are a bit over-enthusiastic with feeding.

No Wonder I Get Confused.
Thanks Finnie, they are all out in flight now, I've taken out my cages so they have full aviary to fly in. Haven't counted but seems to be a lot of cock birds, AGAIN. Such is life !!

Hi From Spain
Hi, In Australia we use photobucket to upload pics. don't know if it's world wide? You need to upload pics to p.bucket and then have your post ready and open on b.b.c. also, you can then copy the I.M.G.code on picture in photobucket and paste it into your b.b.c. post hope this helps. I had a lot of trouble working it out but got there in the end. pics must be uploaded at 640 x 480 max. good luck.

Poison Seed Again
Well B.J. it's good to see companies recalling their contaminated products. I don't ever remember seeing peanut products in bird seed in Oz. but it's good to see someone was on the ball. Would like to think same would apply here if there was a problem.

Returning Breeders To The Aviary.
Not a problem, mine get quiet excited and noisy when a pair come back into aviary or I add new babies from kindy cage. Haven't had any fights etc. Just a lot of noisy birds for a little while then back to normal.

Please Tell Me The Sex Of These Budgies And Maybe Age
Better picture. of them both. I'd still say Green male, not 100% but I think mauve/grey is female and both, seeing bars on green in this picture, about the same age. Probably about to go into 1st moult. Don't know where our resident experts are but they would tell at a glance exactly what your birds are. Both look quiet at home, pretty pair as well.

Will There Be Trouble?
If you don't add any breeding box's you will probably be okay. There's trouble with hens over nest box's, but if there are none, not a problem. USUALLY.
-
Yes Or No
With those measurements it should be big enough for 3 birds. As long as you remember to quarantine the new bird AWAY from other cage for 3-4- weeks to see all is okay. As long as there are no nest box's you should have a happy trio. I think I'd add another male. Pics when your ready would be good.

Can Someone Please Tell Me The Sex And Maybe Age
I'd say Green is cock bird, no 2. grey? Hen. Green looks older than grey, grey still looks to have baby stripes on head so under 3 mths. my guess only l.o.l.

What Wormer Should I Use?
Great looking Aviary/Flight. Is it indoors? Do your birds get access to sunlight? If you have all pet birds it should be great. Good to be able to watch what your birds get up to. P.S. I wouldn't worry about the one you lost. I had one fly past me in Aviary screeching and fell to floor dead also. I think it's just an odd event, you'll probably have the rest for years yet.

What Wormer Should I Use?
Same here, yes it is one drop on neck for Ivamectin. Can you walk into your cage/aviary or not? If you can walk into it, you can use a small net to catch each bird to treat them. Obviously they don't like it, when you catch them (with a glove on if you have hens l.o.l), it would be easier with 2 people, I manage by myself by holding bird and gently blowing the feathers up so you can place drop on skin. If you have a large cage you would have to have a 2nd cage handy, indoors so you don't loose any, catch each bird, treat it and place in 2nd cage until they are all done then return them to their original cage. Hope this helps.

What Wormer Should I Use?
Hi Phoenix, To each his own, I personally dose all my birds with a drop of Ivomectin (for birds,it may be sold under another name there) I do mine regardless, whenever I bring a new bird home I use it. If you have any other problems it may clear them as well. I leave them in quarantine for 3-4 weeks to make sure they are healthy before adding them to Aviary. I don't know the tortoise wormer but it's horse's for course's, I'd only use a specific bird wormer for birds, reptile wormer maybe toxic for birds and vice versa.

Freaking Out When Entering
Hi, birds that aren't hand reared/tamed etc. will be very flighty for a long time in the Aviary, mine have gradually got used to me going in and out. I can't handle them but an odd one or two come up very close to me for a "chat" which is great. As you get new chicks if you handle them a lot from the nest box they should be more tame in the flight.

New Cage/aviary
Just some clever computer skills F. Panda. if only it was that easy. l.o.l.

How Much Time To Give A Pair?

Suggestions Please
Hi Nadene sorry you lost your beautiful hen. Glad to see you have support from your club members. Maybe next meeting e.g. someone could show you how to use a crop needle. I've never used one either, saw a great video how to do it bit scary but would be a good skill to have. Maybe vet could have a med you could put in their water? Good luck with rest of your birds, hope you can pick up some great birds from club members.
