Hi budgies are programmed to breed when conditions suit, so they cycle in condition throughout the year. Just be mindful of the weather conditions and breed when it suits you best as they need extra attention when breeding. Cheers Jenny
  4. Wow he is amazing, I have a halfsider Quaker hen but she is not nearly as well defined as that Cheers Jenny

Hi the first one looks like an opaline grey hen, the second looks like a grey male and then an albino hen and the other grey is a little harder to pick but I would say male also. What colour are the parents? sometimes that can give you a clue on the sexes Cheers Jenny

Hi Helen, not sure if there. is a special bird sand as such but your ideas sound fine to me. You could also use fine shell grit instead of sand, you can buy it in large bags at stock feed places usually. I don't think you will need lime if you are using a tray I think people use it in soil aviaries. Cheers Jenny
  7. Hi and welcome, Your original bird I would say is definitely a dominant pied male. Your new one looks to be a male in three of the photos but looks like a hen in photo no.3, it is best if you can take them in good natural light to display the colour more accurately. Cheers Jenny

Hi Sunny looks to be a double factor spangle and the dark markings are suffusion of the colour coming through and nothing to worry about. Cheers Jenny
  10. Hi he looks either olive or violet green they often have a blue cast on certain areas. Cheers Jenny
  11. hilly replied to Sherlock's post in a topic in New to BBC
Hi and welcome, dad is an opaline grey, mum is a spangle opaline grey and the baby is an albino hen. Dad must carry the ino gene and any albinos you get will be hens. Cheers Jenny

Hi he is a yellowface blue double factor spangle and very pretty. Cheers Jenny
  13. Don't panic budgies mate for the fun of it, if you put a box in it will encourage her to lay.
  14. Hi much better pictures this time, your hen looks to be possibly goldenface opaline dominant pied violet but she is also either greywing or cinnamon and may also be spangle she is a very pretty bird. Cheers Jenny
  15. Hi Annabelle and welcome, your eldest baby should just about be ready to leave the nest with the other not far behind are they fully feathered? If so you may be able to put them in a small open box or icecream container on the floor of the cage with seed in it to tempt them to try eating, and dad should continue feeding them, just keep an eye on them and check their crops, they should be full by the evening. As for the hen left on eggs you could try to put them into a breeding cage and transfer the eggs but if you don't want to you can discard the eggs and remove the boxes just watch that the hen doesn't get egg bound if she hasn't finished laying, they can sometimes lay one or two more off the perch. If we don't make the decision when to stop them breeding they sometimes just keep going. Don't let this discourage you from breeding, we all have our ups and downs but if you choose to colony breed double the amount of boxes per hens and you might not have as much trouble, at least with one pair per cage you only have them to worry about and that sometimes is more than enough. I do colony breed myself but I accept the pitfalls that come with it, I also cage breed and that is not without it's problems either. Cheers Jenny
  16. Hi and welcome, Chaos is a greywing skyblue and Sweety looks to be a yellowface dominant pied grey or mauve it is hard to tell from the photos they are a bit small. Sweety could also have other mutations but I can't see her back as she could be opaline or spangle as well. Cheers Jenny
  17. Try offering some seed that has been soaked in water overnight and rinsed well most birds relish this as it is easy for them to eat. Otherwise same as what BJ said making sure she can access her food easily. Cheers Jenny

Sorry to hear about Finnie but she has left you a nice legacy that will be with you for as long as you keep her kin. Happy reminders Cheers Jenny
  19. They both look like boys to me, are their ceres pinky purple colour? Cheers Jenny
  20. hilly replied to Catsol's post in a topic in What Sex Is My Budgie?
    Very pretty
  21. hilly replied to Catsol's post in a topic in What Sex Is My Budgie?
She is a violet recessive pied which can be harder to sex as the males cere stays the same colour as a young male so is pinky-purple and is smooth while the hens are the same as other hens with varying shades of brown and sometimes bluish white, but rougher in texture than the males. Cheers Jenny

It's possible that he just over preened his new feathers as they were growing, they should grow back fine unless he does it again. The feathers are not far from his preening gland maybe the new growth was annoying him.

  25. hilly replied to Catsol's post in a topic in What Sex Is My Budgie?
Hi welcome to the forum. I would say male but the picture is a bit grainy so it is hard to see if the cere is fleshy coloured or light tan, if light tan you have a hen. A few more photos would be helpful. Cheers Jenny
