  1. Here is the aforementioned cinammon cockatiel. He'll be moved out to the aviary first thing in the morning. His song whistling skills are amazing .
  2. A couple of photos to show the extent of poor Ringneck's plucking . I decided to call him Bobble because with the big feathered head and bald skinny neck he looks like one of those bobble head toys :fear. Poor thing. I'm gonna try to find him one of Kimberley's knitted doll jumpers tomorrow to try modifying it for Bobble to wear.
  3. Big Mac . I post ads on Gumtree, in the local Thursday Ad paper and on Petlink. Plus word of mouth gets around through people who've surrendered birds to me in the past. Oh and I've listed my name and number with several vet surgeries and pet shops. You'd be surprised how many Pet Paradise type shops get birds brought in. AV, if people need to rehome their birds and you can't or don't have the room, please give them my name and number. I'll PM it to you .
  4. From what I've read, the genetics of cresteds are quite complicated. I found this very helpful: http://www.bestofbreeds.net/al-nasser/article4.htm
  5. Okay, if I ever need to rehome him again, I'll let you know. Right now he's doing great. He's used to being in with budgies and is sitting cuddled up with my rescued budgies. My own breeders I keep in 2 separate aviaries away from the aviaries that house the rescues. Today's rescues are a second semi-tame rainbow lorikeet and a 9 year old cockatiel. To my surprise, the tiel whistles trumpet tunes and Pop Goes the Weasel. And probably others I haven't heard yet. He was a family pet for 9 years but now the have a baby which keeps getting woken by the tiel. I'll be putting him outside later today. Photos of both birds coming tonight . LOL the tiel just started making a phone ringing noise. I love rescuing birdies!!
  6. He needs to be in a box of some sort that allows heat in from a lamp. Line the box with a towel to keep him warm. He shouldn't be eating seeds at his age. He needs hand rearing formula. This comes in the form of a powder which you mix with warm water and either feed by spoon or plastic syringe (with no needle of course). Since you can't view images here on the site, perhaps view these. You will need hand rearing formula something like these: http://www.kimani.com.au/Images/neocare.jpg http://www.tkpoultrysupplies.com.au/x-scri...images/harf.JPG http://vetnpetdirect.com.au/files/P/t_17314.jpg Mix it according to the instructions on the packet. And definitely take the bird with you to work if you can, keeping it warm along the way and feeding it every 4 hours. Good luck.
  7. Hi Guys. I came across this site which gives instructions for making dozens of great budgie and parrot toys. Everything from swings, playgyms, chewables, bead toys, wooden toys, plastic toys, you name, it's there. I'm going to make some for my Quakers . http://www.cheepparrottoysntips.com/toyindex.html
  8. Oops, I forgot to reply to this sorry Kaz. I've been using a little bottle of....I'm not sure what the brand is, but it's a common one from pet shops and vets. It's for scaley face. I trim the excess growth off hte nails and beak, then apply the scaley treatment with cotton buds. I've been doing it regularly for a year but I'm not getting anywhere. I've heard putting a fine layer of cooking oil on top of their water dish coats the beak in oil and somehow kills the mites. Is this true?
  9. Good idea Sunshine . I have myself listed with a couple of vets and registered pet shelters to foster and/or adopt birds in need of a home, and I advertise on Gumtree, Petlink and the local classifieds.I would like to find out how to officially register as a bird shelter, and complete any necessary courses to do so. (By the way, mods feel free to move my topic on rescued birds to this category- I didn't know it was here). Sunshine, do you run a bird rescue shelter too?
  10. Aww that's great . I love my Quakers. They're so full of personality, and very cheeky.
  11. I love the look of the males, especially whites and pastel blues. I've had quite a few Ringnecks in the past. I've actually had hundreds more rescues come through my aviaries, but I don't have photos of all of them, and some have been passed on to new loving homes.
  12. That really is awful and irresponsible of the petshop. But like krosp said, good one you for listening to our advice and taking it to work with you if you can. Leaving the baby alone that long at home is not right. It should be fed every 4 or so hours, and kept warm with a heatlamp, especially since it doesn't have any feathers at all. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
  13. Yes they should soon, assuming he doesn't pluck the new growth. I'm thinking I'll raid my daughter's doll box and find a little knitted jumper for him. He won't survive a Melbourne winter otherwise. Aside from the plucked feathers, he's in perfect condition. He'll make a great breeder again if we can pair him up once he's feeling better. I have such a soft spot for birds like him .
  14. Aww, well thankyou . Today's rescue was an unfortunate green Ringneck cock. He was partnered and had several clutches before his partner died. The stress caused him to pluck himself completely bald . I was also given 6 budgies, mostly skyblue spangles.
  15. Here are some of my past rescues: Punk (who came with 2 other tiels). Custard (pictured with Punk) and her partner (in the background) came to me 2 weeks ago. My beloved JoJo who was only with us 2 months, but took captured my heart and took a piece with him when he passed away in February . (Now I'm crying, doh!) My first rescue, as a teenager in the late 90's. This is one of only a couple of photos I have of Rosie the Rainbow Lorikeet. She used to lick my face and glasses. She was birdnapped from my grandpa's aviary in 2003 . Olive and his/her 2 sisters came to me with 3 Cockatiels, from a woman who had all 6 of them plus another 6 or so birds crammed into a cage together . I only wish I could have rescued the lot, but she didn't want to give them all up. Beaker the hybrid Lovebird came to me in February from a sick woman who didn't have time for her anymore. An un-named Cockatiel, who has since gone to the home of a friend of mine who wanted a tame bird. He whistles, imitates the phone ringing, and the sms ringtone on the previous owner's phone . I posted videos of it on Youtube under the name "Mynuttybirds". Canary the yellow Ringneck, who went to a friend who breeds them so she could be with other Ringnecks. Ruby the 3 year old female Eclectus. She had been moved from home to home for a long time, and was once tame but had lost trust in people. She'd been carelessly thrown in with a male who had ripped out all her tail feathers. She'd been mistreated in other ways too. So when I adopted her in February, she was rather scared and aggro. It took her a month to open up and become comfortable with us, and even start talking. She loves to chatterbox at dusk and fills the whole house with "HELLO RUBY!!! HELLO RUBY DOOBY DOOBY DOO!".
  16. No, we don't actually have WIRES here in Victoria. I'm not officially registered anywhere, honestly because I don't know how/where to go about it.
  17. I run a bird rescue organisation from home. I take in birds that have been found, rescued from places, from owners (like the elderly) who can no longer care for them, etc. I've been given Budgies, Quakers, Cockatiels, Quails, Greencheek Conures, parrots of different types, Lorikeets, Lovebirds, the list goes on. I have such a soft spot for rescued and unwanted birds . My rescues are all kept separate from my own budgies. I got a call asking me to take in a Rainbow Lorikeet from a single mum whose neighbours had complained about the squarking. So this afternoon I went around to pick him up. He was in a small bare cage outside with one perch and nothing but single ratty toy. The cage was filthy, foodbowls and tray hadn't been cleaned out in a long time, and there were wasps EVERYWHERE. Allover us, the birdcage, in the water, ugh. Plus her 3 dirty smelly barefoot boys ran around hitting eachother with poles and sticks, running into the cage. (They also tried to get in my car and grab stuff, and whacked the bonnet with sticks  ). The bird apparently spent most of the past 2 months covered with a sheet to prevent squarking since the neighbour's complaint. Poor thing. I brought a corn cob with me and gave to him, he pounced on it like he hadn't seen real food for a long time. Now, I'm not one to judge people on how they live or what they look like, but seriously the way some people think it's acceptable to treat birds really makes me angry . Not to blow my own trumpet, but I think the me coming along is the best thing that's happened to this Lorikeet. His name is Chewy, and is surprisingly tame. In the car on the way home, the cage was lying on it's side and the door slid open. Next thing I know, Chewy is on the back of the passenger seat dancing up and down and talking, rather proud of himself . He apparently swears too, which I haven't heard yet . We're building another aviary at the moment, so he'll be outside there soon with plenty of space, toys, food and some great mental and physical stimulation. I'll keep this updated with my rescues as they come in .
  18. Whoa . You must have a lot of budgies. Are all yours paired in breeding cages or do you have some in aviaries? I buy my seed 20kg at a time from a place about 10 minutes away. I store it in a big sealable plastic rubbish bin and haven't had a problem.
  19. How do you mix all those colour together Dr Nat? Perhaps put them in a mixing bowl? Seriously though, what pairs do you start with?
  20. My hubby makes that at work, so I could make a whole flock of black budgies :hooray: .
  21. So what was the deal with the feathers? It was a chest crest? And has anyone in Australia seen budgies like this? I'd love to get my hands on one or two!
  22. Lol Travis for a girl's name. Where'd you come up with that? I'm gonna keep an eye out next month for a Sun Conure hen at the Peninsula bird sale. Are you going?
  23. LOL I did think of Elvis, but not sure yet. I'm pretty sure I'm calling the hen Fluff .
  24. I couldn't tell you the first thing about pairings. But I love this hen, she's gorgeous .
  25. I posted these in the other thread, but I'll put them here anyway. Half crested sky blue 06 cock: Fully crested (DF spangle was it? :boogie: ) 08 hen:
