Checking Some Fruits, And How Do You Feed It To Your Budgies?
My boy enjoys rockmelon, watermelon, strawberries, cucumber ...no that last one is wrong, he doesn't enjoy it is LOVES it! Broccoli is a big favourite. I wouldn't recommend capsicum...simply because I would suspect it could be a bit much....they say don't feed birds onions and I would think capsicum could be the same? I could be wrong. I got a stainless steel fruit kabob holder from the pet shop the other day (AUD 4.95) and it has no sharp edges or anything like that...you just thread the fruit on it and attach it to the cage. Before that I just poked the fruit into the side of the cage, sometimes holding it with a clothes peg. He loves to sit on a half slice of cucumber too and peck away at it (I should post the video...he's so adorable).

Budgie Owners Wanted!
Done it. You know, you should ask if people have other companion animals....because it does impact on how often budgies get out of their cage for exercise. Good luck with your research. Cheers

Worried About Paddy...new budgie
He's a lovely little thing, congratulations! Give him a few days of being in a calm environment and I'm sure he'll pick up...from his perspective he's been wrenched away from his flock, had a haircut and then gone to a new home...it's all so overwhelming for the little thing. I offered my guy fruit and veggies from the get go but he didn't touch them for a couple of weeks...but I still think it was useful to put them in there as he had the opportunity to get used to seeing them...he's eating like a fiend now of course. Same for toys, he had a ladder and a hangy thing with a bell...the ladder he played with in the first couple of days, the hangy bell thing he has only shown any interest in during the past week or two. Good luck, you sound caring so he's a lucky boy.

Cleaning Cages
It *sounds* like a lot of cleaning but it isn't - I do it all before my breakfast in the morning and only takes 10 minutes and a full clean only takes around 20 minutes (full clean happened today). Cucumbers are my Gill's most favourite food - cut off about 3cm length, then cut in the middle (keep one half wrapped up and in the fridge for later) then either put a slit in the remaining cucumber and pop it on the bars to hold or put it on the table and your little one will totter over and eat away. Also, you can just cut thicker slithers and pop that in the bars. He loves Love LOVES the cucumber seeds and the skin although, I must admit, I'm a little concerned about the effects of that on his tummy so he gets to induldge in a little skin but not too much. Ops, you have 40 budgies? ayecarumba...in that case I'd just slit the cucumber down the middle and pop both sides (seed up) in the feeding tray. I can by the photo that your little one already enjoys his red foods....and his face is stained....expect the same with cucumber

Cleaning Cages
This is what I do: I have one budgie and I keep a bit of butcher's paper on the bottom of his cage (above the grill) which I change daily. His ladder is longish so it holds the paper down plus, with the summer heat, I've had a small bowl of very, very shallow water in the bottom as well. I wash his water container every day as, with it being wet, I don't want it to get 'furry' and I change his seed (ensuring I wipe the feeder down if any poo gets on there). If there is any cucumber juice on the bars (my boy loves his cuies!) I give that a wipe and if there is any stray poo clinging to his perches, swing etc that gets wiped off as well. Once every 2 or 3 days I take the bottom tray out and toss the stray seeds into the garden. Once a week I take his cage out the back and give it 'the treatment' - a nice scrubdown of every single surface followed by drying it lightly with a towel then the rest is up to the sun. The budgie, meanwhile, is inside having his out of cage time and playing with homever is babysitting him A little cleaning everyday, just like you do now, seems to keep the cage reasonably clean.

Big Fat Budgies
I know what you mean <nods>. My boy was (and still is) 'bigger' than all the other birds in the breeder's aviary - they looked 'refined' whereas mine was stockier.

Heatwave Coming...
We just suffered the heatwaves in Sydney.....last Saturday was particularly bad. My lad spent most of his day inside his cucumber and I had the rotating fan blowing on him with a cold damp towel draped over the top of his cage....but I was wondering how people with aviaries deal with their birds....I know these are native Aussies but the heat would be unbearable for the poor things.
