Breeding Calendars
There is an 18 day diferent from the top row to the next row down. Eg if the egg is laid on the 20th September the egg should hatch on the 8th October.

New Avairy
I have added an extra timer to the light over the bench. It now comes on automatically 5 minutes before the main lights go off and then 20 minutes after that. This gives a staged decrease in lighting before the night light takes over.

Bird Room/breeding Room?
You will need to put in a window. Cut through with a 4" grinder with a metal cutting wheel. Frame with aluminum "U" Channel. Bunnings will have it. Then frame inside that with Aluminum angle and then the mesh.

Bird Room/breeding Room?
Sound good. Glad I could have helped.. This was the breeding cabinets when I started. It measured 1200 x 1200 (roughly) It was set up in the pergola. The flight was on the outside of the shed. I eventually moved everything into the shed and cut through the wall to make the flight bigger.

Can 2 Spangles Produce A Albino
If the eyes are cinnamon not red it could be a DF Spangle. Young DF Spangles have cinnamon eyes that go black as they develop.

I would prefer to use TBP but have the age of the birds as in BT. At the moment you have to calculate it separately. BT reminders on egg hatching, ringing and fledging is good too.

Spangle Budgies

Just Hatched
Neat are you feeding the parents on some good protein? If not Boil an egg for 20 minutes, cool, grind up the shell and place in a warm (100degC) oven for 1/2 hour to dry out. Add with some spinach leaves, parsley, carrot, beetroot to a blender. Add the dried out shell and brend till a rough texture not too fine. If you have some Calcivet, add 5ml per cup and give about 1/8 cup per day per pair. I add a small amount of hulled oats, just to get them interested. This will give them Protien, Vitamins, Calcium and minerals. Good for growing chicks.

Rats Again
Kaz, I just saw this. I am so sorry to hear about it. I had rat problems early last year and the trap seemed to sort them out.... But??? Dave told be about getting a small sponge and adding a bit of Eucalyptus to stop Bugs getting into the seed. I glued a bit on the top of the holding bins. I mix this seed together for the birds, you can smell the Eucalyptus. .... since then I haven't seen or caught any rats. Last year I caught 9 rats in three weeks. I didn't think about the Eucalyptus until now.. It could have helped keep them away.. The tray stays set but has been emptied for over a year. Might be worth a try. .... oh and the birds don't mind the smell or taste at all.

Spangle Budgies
My spangle pairings at the moment are 1. Yellowface Grey cock to DF yellow hen (cock has very good features that I want to put to the spangles) 2. Spangle light green cock to Opaline light green hen (Two good lines that I am trying to bring togeather, the cock is split opaline so I will get Opaline hens and normal hens. Hopefully the Normals will through good spangles) 3. Spangle light green cock to Spangle Opaline Grey green hen (Same as 2. The hen of 3 is the sister to cock of 2. The Cock of 3. is brother to hen of 2.) 4. Spangle Sky cock to Spangle Opaline Grey Green Hen. (cock is a Church and O'Rielly, the hen just won best old spangle of show. Her brother was Champion Young bird of show last year. The hen is sister to hen of 3) 5. Light green cock to Spangle light green Hen. (Uncle to niece) 6. Spangle Opaline grey green cock to Dominant Pied light green hen. (Cousins, cock is son to hen of 4.) 7. Spangle Grey cock to Spangle Sky hen. (1/2 Brother to 1/2 sister) As you can see I have some interesting combinations. Each has a reason. Wether to bring to lines to geather, add features or to line breed. I also have pairings of Recessive Pied to Split, Recessive Pied to Recessive Pied and Recessive Pied to Dark Eyed Clear. I also have Dominate pied to Opaline, Dominat pied to Dominant pied and Dominant pied to Normal.

I like the idea of the small cupboard for the rings TB. I might steal that one off you. Very Good.

Spangle Budgies
Can't argue with you there TB. It's been the pairing to opalines and badly marked normals that have resulted in the poor marking. The pairing to opaline to help increase the sizing has had it's draw back. I have been talking with Jeff Attwood regarding the pairings and he suggests the old ruling of Spangle to Normal to better the markings isn't correct and we should be looking at Spangle to Spangle. Yes there will be DF Spangles, but whats wrong with that??. DF Spangles back to Normals will give good wing markings and good spots.... Bullseye spots .... not the full ones that are now being seen.

Problems I Have Faced
Well in a way it is a lesson on what not to do and also Culled the weak. The rest of the birds should be better off with the knowledge I have learnt and there health should be better. TB she gave me 11 chicks.
-
Normal Vs Melanistic Spangles
Melanistic spangle usually have full mask spots where the normal should be bullseye spots.

Euthanasia
My wife has been on life support for 5 years now with out it she has 13 days to live. I had a friend of my fathers on the same life support, he decided it was not worth going on and turned it off. He lasted 15 days. So sad. Life can continue with the proper support. But when it comes down to budgies it is a different story. Life support is not an option. I tried for a week to keep two birds alive and because of my work they slipped away. This is when Euthanasia is need for those that wont naturally make it or can't make it with the time that we can afford them. It is sad. I have Euthanasia a number of birds. The first has effected me to this day. I had one that I should have Euthanasia but watched die, a slow death and that was fluffy. Never again will I let a bird like that suffer the way that bird did.

Euthanasia
May I put forward a catch 22. The Hippocratic oath is that you must prolong life and decrease suffering. But in many cases to prolong life will increase suffering. Sorry but I am for euthanasia. My wife is terminally ill and this is something I will need to address in the future. I want to grow old with her but I do not want her to suffer.
