  4. i prefer my way to raise hand reared chicks which is just let mother do it and handle chick dayly for longer and longer i dont have to worry about any food prep then other than daily rounds but this is good for as you say birds that get regected if you do not have fosters but really you didnt give much info i know i didnt learn anything but you use a fish tank and a few picks of other things possable to use you didnt persicafy a brand of food or a certain gage crop needle what i can use if i dont use a crop needle how to mix the food if they need water or not as well and im not being nasty i actually would of loved to see all this info its a good idea you have to show how its done but i still dont know how just brief bit of info can i request you actually do a full step by step how to hand rear a budgie from lets say one week to out and eatting cause to be honest i wouldnt know how to i rely on my foster hens and this info may come in valubale to me one day if it was to the t fully set out and instructed and your way with the fish tank dont add stuff just your exact set up do you use heat pad or not cause if you dont then cool but i want to know how to do it exactly how do i keep bird warm if no pad or do you need one not bits and peaces of what or how you can please the whole kit n cabodale cheers gb

  7. I seriously doubt there would be any evidence of mouse poo in a cage with a base like this it wouldnt be in cage it would be on ground with in amoungsrt the seed and **** but im not ruling out mice just think that with a cage that open draft cold is my first concern but could be mice but i dont think its that Draught is definitely a major factor here one way to combat the draft getting under and in would be to just nail or screw to blocks of wood onto underside of cages and with each block have it have a groove as so you can make one big long tray to pull out and clean or you could do same idea in smaller sections one per cage just place a peaice of paper on the draws so its easyly cleaned daily thats what id do
  8. I seriously doubt there would be any evidence of mouse poo in a cage with a base like this it wouldnt be in cage it would be on ground with in amoungsrt the seed and **** but im not ruling out mice just think that with a cage that open draft cold is my first concern but could be mice but i dont think its that
  9. yes theirs still poo kaz mice poo while eatting walking their poos small but its still their and anyways hens would make dolphin noicse at night if mice bothering them i dont think its mice i just got a report back on my bird as i sent a young ill bird for a full test of everything then to be put to sleep and micro autopsyed came back pneumonia of the chest my avirys got no draft exept one small spot which i will now fix and my flights like laura palma wrapped in plastic yet a small draft was the cause of all my many deaths this past year not on thing else wrong and was not viral litrally pneumonia like people get id cover drafts first
  10. should i try this or could it kill me self confidence in my genetic ability lol
  11. lol it worked though Is that an actual anti-plucking product or just a nasty tasting spray? I have a plucker sitting on eggs that is a great layer/feeder/breeder but she plucks when the pins start to turn to feathers so i usually move her out and let the cock finish feeding to prevent her even starting the plucking process. Would love to see if there was a way to stop her plucking? its an actual produce' on market its around 12 dollors and truely works unless hens really really stubbon you take chicks out when down gets plucked and spray them you have to let dry a bit so chicks dont get chill i only sprayed it ones this did the job i will get name of it tomorrow as its out in shed and to cold for me tonight update on chicks all doing well and time spending with the babys begins on monday
  12. can i sugest you buy some show culls from around your area for no more than 20.00 each you can get some fantastic birds for this price id only get say 4 pair and id be inclind to work out what varierty you like the most you can decide on colour later join a club go to meetings for a while firs though listen ask questions then preper area birds will be kept in and get breeding cabbinits ect then with these birds practise bird husbandry and maitnence as show birds are so diffrent to pet i never belived it but they are start small then breed your own birds breeding them is the best way to learn its a very enjoyable thing but isnt easy till your established a bit thats from my experience i give this advice
  13. id foster even if they were cold if it was just last night you cheaked but your ment to cheak breeding birds morn and night poor cock bird keep him away for others for two weeks just to be safe thats what id do
  14. if you did have to understand your budgies better by doing something id have to say my experiment is how well do they cope in the freezing cold with out sleep all night long lol as ITS LIKE THE ICE AGE OUT HERE IN GIPPY and i cant ever sleep so what i learn t is that 1 ..they are fluffy as they toes are freezing off at bellow 10 degree out their at 11 pm and at 4 am its worse its a average of around 7 man no wonder their having a hard molt best it gets is at about 3 pm where its 20 to 25 in aviary and 2 . they also cant sleep cause its LIKE THE ICE AGE OUT HERE LOL seriously thats a cool way to make a bad situation funny tell yourself it was for the birds now your a true bird nut lol
  15. eight wow go gal :party0011:
  16. Thanks guys, Lots to consider, i will make some changes and see if it makes a difference to the survival rate. I live in the country so there are lots of things that could disturb hens at night (foxes, ferral cats, possums, rats, mice all the usuall). The only way mice can get in the breeding cabinets would be through the wire doors with the vertical wire on the front of the cage doors, what would you suggest to prevent this (keeping in mind they need to slide), I will get my husband to put some miniorb across the back to stop the breeze (wind tunnel-good thought). you can buy mouse proof wire im getting some soon its not much and you can double wire your cabinets with it cover windows gaps under and ontop of doors ect you can spray your breeding cabinets as nubbly five does i tried this this round with great success no eky bugs of any type but i dont think its mice as youd smell them and see poo
  17. i have a one i got in the junk mail off the gas company one of johnny howards ideas lol see some junk mails useful ive hung it from roof in center of aviary i read it nightly at about 11 pm and then at 4 am if im still awake just to see the change as the weather gets cooler i read it in avo and in more pretty much when ever im in their i will give it a look at its handy to have i dont worry about the breeding cabinets as i cover these every night
  18. i have never used a night light i even walk into my aviary at night sometimes as i can walk up and grab a certain bird with out all birds flying off i just talk to them tell them its mummy lol and keep talking whole time im their my birds are use to me and i can walk up to them durring day to but not more than faceing them soon as i move my arm they know im afterthem i dont use a net i find the birds get to stressed i just walk up carmly and talk to the bird i want to get its atention then i just grab it mostly i get them first go sometimes i dont but usually when people are around as their not useto others night lights are good if you want to cheak birds at night but i dont think they really help much i tryed it for two weeks but made no diffrence never use a torch this does freak them out if theirs a light on at night i think this gives hens more reason to leave nest so im with clearwing lights off night is night i find the cocks wake earliy to mate when sun rises if its been dark all night and hen comes out for stretch some say they help hens back to nest but i never known a bird that cant find its nest if it did leave it for anyreason
  19. why i have cameras
  20. All the chicks that do survive are really healthy and strong, i have only ever had 2 chicks in 27 years that have had deformities and they died anyway. My breeding cabinets are outdoors as i don't have the luxury of indoor breeding rooms because we are renting for a couple of years but they are elevated of the ground and are free standing along the side of the aviary, morning sun, afternoon shade the floor is wire so all waste materials fall through the bottom onto the ground so everything is clean. As for sprays, i don't use them as i am all for organic/al a natural. Maybe it is the outside breeding? the chicks are in a less controlled environment as far as temps/wind/rain so maybe it does come down to survival of the fittest when breeding out doors?? hay lib my breeding is all out doors i cover my birds with a tarp at night to keep warmer and from wind and draft draft is a huge killer of any age show bird i have experienced why i wrapped my aviary in glad wrap you could easliy do same put a water proof canvas tarp on across the top of your breeding cages and roll down every night it has to cover from bottom of back of cages and around and down the frount you can ground it a few diffren ways with a lead pipe all way through the canvas tarp which you stitch on or bricks sitting on top how ever doesnt matter so long as no draft gets in you must get up early to lift though like 530 am before birds awake or 600am latest i keep the tarp down on rainy days or windy cold days and i try not to check boxes on cold days until a time that wind may die down i hope you find answer chicks are dieing at all difrent stages so its hard to know with out really seeing

  24. okay with weather being so crappy i havent been taking pics as dont want birds to get chill i breed out doors so but update all chicks good theirs a dom pied i can see clearly and a possable dom pied the first one i think is grey so i think that makes my life easyer as i dont think sky violet and light green can give grey please someone just agree or disagree so as im certain as im a bit off on my pairing out comes at moment been bit destracted of late but im certain you cant but ???im not always right with things so...chick one mine chick two looks to be hen chick three or 4 look to be the cocks waiting for the weather to become better almost time to start spending time with them for 10 minits every day so the begining of tameing will be starting soon i will take pics soon as suns out
