  1. the room is lit by natural lighting. We only use lights at night. Does this make a difference?
  2. See mine are in the house, in a main room. They dont go naturally
  3. Yes they still wont breed. She wasn't in an aviary or anything when she was breeding in store. They were in a pet store cabinet. Keeping in touch would be great!
  4. Simple. How many hours of sleep do breeding budgies need a night? And do they need silence to sleep?
  5. Oh the sweetheart! Looking forward to hearing GOOD NEWS :hap:
  6. Thanks for all the great advice! Its confirmed a lot about what I was already thinking. Im going to try a few things and then see how it goes! Six of the bushies came into us at the same time. They were full grown and not captive bred - so i can only presume if they were wild caught that they're prob not brother and sister. But i couldnt tell. Her cere is in breeing condition and his is a lovely bright blue. Im going to try closing off the breeding box tomorrow. Cross fingers!
  7. Okays I cant get my pair to breed, I would love any advice. Here's the deal: They are in this breeding cabinet together: I brought them from my store together. The hen was laying egg after egg when she was in store. Since I have her at home she hasnt layed a single one. What sort of things can effect breeding? They are kept indoors (in my room or lounge room) so they are never subjected to cold temps. I do move the cabinet around abit, out in the sun on a nice day, or between the bedroom and the lounge room. Will this effect them? There was a stage when they were in my room for ages without being moved- but she never layed then either. They get fresh vegies seed and water (with calcium supp some days). They get moist budgie starter and sprouts too. Does it have to be silent for birds to sleep? Their cabinet gets covered at night but theres no where in the house that is very quiet (me my parents my partner and another couple is never quiet!). They are paired up and in love. They feed and groom each other etc etc. And she often scratches around the box and spends time in there. But doesnt lay. What can I do!? Its not like she cant lay, because she was laying in store. And suposedly she hatched two of them, that didnt survive ( i didnt see them, other staff did)- so they have had "sex" before - its not like they dont know how to "do it". Its the season and they are not getting very merry! Troubleshooting would be great. Thanks all in advance!

    Was that for me Elly?

Pixi. I would say that I am a pretty decent bird trainer (just look at my videos)- BUT I had the exact same thing with my new bird. And nothing at all worked. I did exactly the same thing, and stuck it out. BUT I believe some birds are just better off with other birds, not with human company. By all means keep trying, but sometimes the bird just doesn't come around either. My little boy is now alot happier with a few other budgies than he would have been as a companion bird.

  17. Okays I dont know if im too keen on this conversation anymore... All of a sudden I dont have time for my animals, and being put back in my place because I read the packets... Who's to say that I dont talk to other breeders? Four of us at my work breed birds. One has being doing it for over 20 year, from red tailed black cockatoos to budgies and finches. I understand you may be trying to help. But maybe you are trying to put me in a "typical mould" as well. What is wrong with packet food?! How many of the people in the forum dont by some sort of food for their animals!? How many people here buy supplements? ( I know i cant make vitamin A out of thin air!?) How many people buy rearing mixes? etc etc

  19. Well im always willing to try things. I figured it wouldnt hurt to offer it to them... Is this wrong? We say to give a varied diet and thats what I am trying to do. (plus i am a spend addict! when im at work I buy everything I can for them)

Flirting with what!? I understand if they do it to toys and stuff buts all too his "ïmaginary friend". Nope it all wood. I wish i could get it on video.
  21. Box says: Feed a heaped teaspoon of prepared budgie starter per week about 1 month before budgies are paired for breeding..... Once paired, offer a teaspoon a day... After the hen lays offer ad lib.... blah blah blah untill chicks fledge. I believe its a good soft food. Other opinions?
  22. thanks melbournebudgies! Dry food really is better for them!
  23. Okay so there is another topic already about nutrition... sooo... This is what my budgies eat: The breeding pair: quality seed mix, budgie starter (paswells), egg and buscit mix, gum leaves, calcivite plus in drinking water, sprouts and fresh fruits or veg (mainly brocoli) Rookie: Whatever I am eating!! hahah. All the above plus pellets and the ocassional millet for training.
