There are plenty of factors when choosing a size for an avairy. For me as a show breeder i believe 4 m is too long. Modern show budgies are about feather. The old timers talk about shoulder and muscle being developed from long flight areas. The trend in UK and europe over the past 10 years and more recently in Australia is for smaller flight/stock cages for show budgies - ie approx 1mlong x 600mm wide x 600 high But it really depends on range of factors, budgies are extremely adaptability to a range of conditions

2010 Nationals
If thats the case Jeff, very interesting. In the past couple years 1. We have moved the ring issue date, from Jan to Sept. 2. Changed the perch sizes to 16mm 3. 3 birds benched????????? 4. Changed the National show date by a month I would say by anyone standards, this adds up to significant changes. I think some of these changes are good and some are bad, but collectively this amount of change in a short period of time cant be good for our great hobby.

2010 Nationals
Hi Heathrow, I find your comment interesting as I too dont believe that increasing the perch size will make the birds grip better. Personally I think a smaller perch would make them grip better, If you put a tree branch in your aviary the birds will all want to be on the end where the branch is at its smallest. As you say time will tell . Maybe hang onto the old perches just in case we revert back. Thank you Matt - finally someone agrees with me. I would like to see perch go smaller eg 9mm. Smaller perch sizes seem to make the birds more alert on the perch, larger perch make for lazy birds that sit across the perch. GB - The reason the 3 toes forward is an issue is for Judging is - to DQ a bird you need to be certain that it is a permanent condition. What makes it more contentious for a bird to be DQ at the Nationals is the number of preselction stages a bird has to go through. ie club selection, state selection & national preparation. I think if Henry George was certain his bird had 3 toes forward on a permanent basis he wouldnt not have benched it.

2010 Nationals
Extensive Judges comments now displayed on a class by class basis on the Live Feed site. The DQ birds had 3 toes forward on a permanent basis. That is when the bird is given the opportunity to move from perch to perch they still display this feature. The photo of the winning grey alos shows this. I guess it wasnt a permanent feature. This tends to affect the larger birds. The new larger perches should fix this issue. We really dont want to be disaulifying birds. I will state my vested interest. We were 2nd in the Greys and had a Pied DQ last year. However, hopefully the issue will sort itself out. I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall at the National Judges meeting today as the brds DQ belonged to National judges. Welcome to the Forum Jeff, I look forward to your contribution and Congratulations on your success at the Nationals, the Grey cock looks to be a lovely bird. The 3 toes forward is an issue for Judges, i would be extremely reluctant to DQ a bird for this when I'm Judging. I'm not 100% certain the changing of perch sizes will make a difference, but time will tell.

Congratulations Liv on your 12th Place Yellowface. Great effort. Victorian team looks to have a good lead, which will be very hard to make up for NSW.

Logan Shield - State Shows Around Australia
Very Stiff Heathrow - given that your hen is now deemed no good, you can send her down to me anytime! Chin up mate! Cheers PT I did seek a response why - she is flecked. PT maybe your Grey Green could be potential partner for her. After thursday she will be in the breeding cage. Congratulations and good luck to everyone who gets a bird selected for there state team. It's no easy feat. I will be watching the "live internet feed" with great enthusiasm over the weekend.

What do you think of the Green Hen? Not much from looking at the picture, really depends on what else you have to use. That's a breeders cull bird. You know the ones that get sold after the **** ones have gone to the dealer... Its still a **** bird, but the spangle is very nice. If i were you, i would be getting back to breeder/dealer (or wherever) to get some more from that spangle line. I dont know how old he is, but he would make a good foundation cock

Yes, I got 2 clutches last year. I then had to sell off my birds for one reason or another. These birds have gone on to raise clutches for the people that bought them as I have kept in touch with them. One hen is now on her third clutch since November last year. Thanks for doing a search on my history here... So back on topic, which birds do you prefer in my pictures? I love a good argument!!! Kazkhstan has some famous citizens, Borat comes to mind Kaz, you may be related. I would have the spangle cock every day of the week.
