  1. Another 4 pairs down today. Just 3 pairs to go!
  2. You can breed Yellow Face Violet Clearwings but their wings will be white, not yellow. You would show them in the Yellow Face class but you'd never be competitive against the more dominant varieties such as Yellow Face blues or spangles.
  3. You should get some nice babies then Renee Fingers Crossed! Of course in my dreams I'm breeding for Nationals
  4. Hmmmm. I still have to put down some Rec Pied pairs, Lutinos, Albinos and DF White. Good news is I found a nice Jeff Lloyd Normal Cobalt pair and have put 2 pairs of Normal Greens down. I've paired Magic and his 3 sisters, put down my 3 best Spangles sisters and found a really nice DF Yellow hen for my super McLoughlin DF Yellow cock bird. Of course the Greywings are down too. The Clearwings I got from Gina are in quarentine for another 3 1/2 weeks but they'll go down, so there's another 3 cabinets. I'm trying to be really focussed and only put down my very best birds ....
  5. Oh lovely birds Splat!
  6. Between yesterday and today I've put 16 pairs down, they can't access the nest box, that'll happen next week some time. Here's some photos:
  7. They're a lot more forgiving here in the West.
  8. Don't worry Glen, some people never get the hang of it! Literally it takes years to get your head around the matrix, not to mention the time it takes to successfully identify the different varieties.
  9. Neither does WA. : 1 Normal Green 1A Normal Greygreen 2 Normal Blue 2A Normal Grey and now at SWBC : 2B Violets!
  10. I don't give them grit but I have been told that zeolite is a good substitute AND that it's recyclable, all you have to do is wash it!
  11. I mentioned earlier that I was going to replace the Fussy Cat Litter with sand in the bottom of my breeding cabinets .... I take it all back! After a 10 day trial of having sand in the bottom of my holding cabinets I have discovered that it's a pain in the proverbial but. The birds flick it all over the place and it clogs up the seed dispenser. Here's what I mean: So now I have gone out and bought some zeolite and replaced the sand with that: ~0~ I'm going to make this another thread soon but here's a couple of Greywing pairings: Pair One: Sky Greywing hen with Cobalt Greywing cock Pair Two: Cobalt Greywing hen with Normal split Opaline Sky Cock A little bit of background on these guys, the 3 Greywings are from the deceased estate of Lin Pittick. Pair one cock and Pair two hen are brother and sister. Pair One sky hen has the darker greywing markings. The cock that I have put Pair two hen to is a Gary Armstrong boy, she is the lesser looking greywing of the 3 and I'm hoping his top end will compliment her.
  12. I put a flutter on and got my money back!

  14. Looking forward to the photos!
  15. From the pics the Light green Cinnamon looks the stronger bird, she might even be bigger than him? Good Luck! She's either coming into or going out of condition.
  16. Gary A....had to find a hen for this boy Interesting! Which one are you going to put to him? Surely not the Spangle- won't the Cinnamon show through?
  17. Okeey? Details please .... where did you get them from, how old are they?! :raincloud:
  18. I dunno Splat .... showing takes a lot out of them. I personally won't show the same bird more than once a month and I rarely show hens 'cause I want to 'save' them for breeding. In fact I try not to show a bird in 2 consecutive shows. I had a wonderful Normal Green who I showed a lot as a beginner Novice and he became a bit of a poser and refused to interact with the other birds. In fact he was a complete dud when I put him in the breeding cabinet. To this day I wonder whether I 'ruined' him by over-showing.
  19. Oh right, I understand. Yes, you do have to prepare your birds. I'm currently 'holding' mine back till I'm happy their calcium intake is sufficient. :raincloud:
  20. Hey Liv, what do you mean they were "rushed' into breeding?
  21. We all aspire to win at Nationals, it's the pinnacle of show budgie breeding! I'm sure some members have won but for most of us Novices it's a dream!
  22. Fantastic result Splat- You Go Girl! :parrot:
  23. My thoughts exactly. :happy-dancing:
  24. A couple of week ends ago representatives from WA's 3 budgie clubs convened for a bar-b-que and a talkfest also attended by Peter Glassonbury from SA. At that talkfest Peter indicated that he did quarentine his birds but didn't use preventative medicine. He then went on to recall a time he introduced a quarentined bird into his aviary and then watched while his other birds dropped like flies while 'the carrier' continued to exhibit excellent health. However, when he introduced it into the breeding cabinet it dropped dead, ravaged by disease. Food for thought. :happy-dancing:
  25. I've seen Gary use it.
