Breeding room handles are attached ( bolted ) from inside..........not screwed on outside. okay, okay I am glad that is not an option then Just had a thought - But have you been locking the breeding room doors every night and every time you pop out to do a job? I know we all have a variety of security measures in place, but How many of us routinely lock things up all the time? - I know I didn't ... but I will.

Really!!!! Thank You for that tip Going out now to get some asap. Grrrrrrrr, what is it about Perth?! Can't get eye cream .... or anything that would stop the itching around the eye .... Me: "I would like some cream for conjuntivitus, please." Pharmacist: "Would that be for you or someone else?" Me: "Someone else." Pharmacist: "We have some drops for mild conjunctivitus" Me: "I really would like a cream, the area around the eye is very red from rubbing" Pharmacist: "Well we only have drops for mild cases, perhaps they need to go to the Doctor and get a prescription" Me: "It is for my budgie!" In the end I was offered Paw Paw cream (which I already have) and which does not say on the label that it reduces itchiness. The Ionic Silver should be coming soon is all I can say at this point. Thanks Robyn. The eye itself seems fine, it is the surrounding area which is affected.

Breeding Pairs 2010
I am sorry you are having these problems Dave, especially as you don't have any nests to foster to. Are the chicks slowly going a pasty white colour? I had a couple of nests like that in 2008. I had heard you could try giving them a drop of olive oil to the beak or even treat the parents with Lincospectrum. I tried both alternatives with limited success and since then have simply fostered the chicks to a healthy mum. BUT you can't do that .... I agree with Kaz here, if you want to try and save them I think you need to try crop feeding as most times when the chicks get ill the parents stop feeding them and let them die.

Ratzy's Breeding Journal
Well all the indications are good! I reckon you'll be getting eggs soon. It is very hot right now .... have you made sure they are in a cool area? Remember that once the hen starts to incubate she is basically box-bound and you need to make sure she doesn't get too hot!

My Birds Are Unwell
Well good news you haven't lost any. And as for not knowing what to do, yeah that is totally understandable as you are on that hair-raising fast learning curve that we all go through when we are starting our stud : New birds from different aviaries PLUS limited experience with diagnosis and treatment It can be a nightmare. But chin up! Look for the silver lining and you will see that as disconcerting and horrible that is right now you are finding out lots and lots and what you figure out now will stand you in good stead for the future.

Lou Lou And Luvie
She started losing condition when I isolated her from her friends and she made it quite clear to me that she is not happy on her own. She did her quarantine period in December and was treated with doxy as par to the course but as her eye is itchy and not running I am confident she does not have chlamydia psittacosis. Baytril is the obvious choice for sore eyes but as it was not effective I am considering conjunctivitus as Plan B. This is very contagious but non life threatening. I have a few years experience now with diagnosis and treatment so I am quietly confident with most things. When I have exhausted my options I and if there is no improvement I will take her to the vet if necessary.

My Birds Are Unwell
Again GB, it is really hard to advise you well without actually seeing your birds. Respiratory illness is budgies is treated with Moxi T, a Rob Marshall product and Pooey bums is treated effectively with a sulpha based med such as Triple C. BUT you said you didn't want to treat them any more and it was going to be survival of the fittest .... Have you lost any birds between Friday and today to make you consider medication as an option? Best of Luck!

Aviary Security
To access the same way we do Renee, means crossing our yard and more chance of being seen. Seems whoever has been at the aviary is coming in from the back or over a neighbours fence or another way which I wont disclose right now. Also I lock the doors of my birdroom. Hmmmmmmm. But this guy likes to take things apart and how difficult is it to unscrew your Breeding room handles .... and if you were in your workshop at the time .... ? I'm just saying that it seems back to front to me.

Lou Lou And Luvie
Here is the story of Lou Lou and Luvie: Lou Lou is a gorgeous Lutino hen I bought at the SWBC Written Auction in December bred in 2009 by Cec and Brenda Gearing. LOU LOU At the beginning of last week I noticed that her eye was sore which I thought unusual 'cause she had just had her Lice & Mites treatment. But I caught her up on Wednesday and brought her inside (the garage is way too hot for quarantine any more) and I was upset to see she had rubbed it really, really red. I decided to give Baytril in the water and to make sure she was getting it I crop fed her the dose for a few days. Unfortunately during this time she started to lose condition and I noticed she wasn't touching any of her food. Check out Lou Lou's red eye: Come Friday it was panic stations, her eye looked no better and she was starting to feel thin and I was starting to crop feed her budgie starter to make sure she was getting food down her. I remembered a post Liv did about Ionic Silver cream being used for sore eyes so I started ringing around all the Health Shops to no avail ... so I did a Google and found Belinda's Natural Animal Remedies in Tasmania and although she didn't have the cream ahe did have the liquid form which she assures me can be applied with an eye dropper. I promptly paid her and hopefully I'll get it soon. In the meantime, what to do about Lou Lou? I could tell she wasn't happy 'cause she's been making those gr gr gr noises budgies do when they are particularly unimpressed with something. I consulted my trusty Diseases in Budgerigars book and decided that conjunctivtus was an option. So I pulled apart her cage and gave it a good dosing of AIL, removed all perches and scrubbed tham and then baked them in the oven. Here's the cage: Then I had a brainwave! Why not put Luvie in with her! Luvie is a cock I got from Hans last year, he doesn't have a tail and put him in the main aviary and he doesn't figure very high up in the pecking order at all BUT pop him in with a hen one-on-one and he is a real Romeo Just last month my best Greygreen hen was crook and not eating until I popped him in with her and within a blink of an eye they were carrying on like an old married couple. LUVIE So in he went yesterday first thing. At the beginning she wouldn't look at him and did that 'I'm hard to get' thing hens sometime do But then I saw she did a bum wriggle and I knew all would be well. Sure enough 10 mins later they were on the same perch and I know that Luvie will be working his magic and feeding her to bursting point before much longer.

I wish it were so, but unfortunately it looks like someone went to a lot of trouble with some bleaching dye

One thing that doesn't make sense to me is the following- If someone has gone to the trouble of jumping your perimeter to gain access, evidently checked out your aviary construction and come back with tools - Why didn't they just access the flights the same way you do via the breeding room? (I'm not giving anything away here 'cause you've mentioned that in your thread about your aviary) As you have intimated, they wanted to make it so that it wouldn't be noticed and obviously been interrupted - if they had gone in the normal way you wouldn't have been the wiser!

Orange Wings?
This is true. I asked him alot of time about pictures fom the breeder who sell gave him those birds. I want to buy them but he never acept it. I proposed to buy some birds to the original breeder neither this way. May e all you are in the rihgt way. Look in all fairness to Rene from Mexico, I think it started out as a practical joke and then went all horribly wrong for him when it 'went global'. Although I do think that whatever he did to those poor birds' feathers was a bit low, I only hope they didn't suffer too much in the process.

But aren't they noisy? And wouldn't the birds go beserk? Come to think of it, given that that corner is so close to your neighbors' I am surprised no one came and investigated!- Aviary Security
:laughter:  Yes, yes I am eating humble pie as I write. You know what I don't get Kaz - Why go to all the bother of bringing along tools to unscrew the aviary wire from the frame when wire cutters are much quicker?- Aviary Security
Just had a thought - Have you reported this to the Police? I think they should be notified. No. I once had experience of a vicious break in to my place of business when I ran a work premises...they smashed the front door in and took all my computer gear etc. They left behind a pocket knife with very clear fingerprints on it, and the cops just didnt want to know about it...couldnt care less. So I seriously doubt my birds will be of interest to them. :laughter: But there is the precedent of Hans' place being broken into and birds taken ... I am pretty sure he reported it. - A Bug In My Screen
