  1. Oh...COME OOONNNNN! It must be the weather, the cat (who NEVER catches mice usually) just ran into the house and dropped a very much alive mouse on the kitchen floor, it ran into my fabric cupboard to join the gang!!!!!
  2. Ringnecks might even eat them!! The bloke they came from said he had quails originally and couldn't work out why the kept disapearing until he discover the ringnecks were finishing them off The mice are officially in my bad books now, I just opened my hall cupboard where all my sewing fabric is kept, I haven't opened it in a couple of months due to a heavy load at work and I can smell mice Going to set some traps and then I face having to possibly wash the whole lot to get rid of any mousey smell, who know what has been chewed and wrecked
  3. Also gumnuts and bottlebrush nuts make great toys, if you want to colour them just use a little food dye
  4. I must say it is lovely to see a new member who is here to take on good advice and learn the dos and don'ts of budgies, I hope you enjoy your new pets as much as the members here enjoy our budgies
  5. Of course Maesie, as long as you're happy to camp The house we want is on 12 acres, so plenty of space for camping, plus we would be thinking of insulating one of the existing sheds and turningit into a little bungalow
  6. Something like this would be brilliant : CAGE
  7. Some bells are toxic, copper ones I think
  8. My ringnecks were going troppo, something they normally only do if they see something furry (the cat or the rabbit usually) but as the rabbit has gone into hiding from the rain and the cat is no where to be seen I knew it wasn't them, so I went out to check. In the dim of twilight I could JUST see a small furry shape sitting just inside the front wire. I figured I better go get it as I have been baiting and didn't want it to die there and be chewed by the birds :eww: It didn't move when I went in and so I figured it had been baited, I picked it up by the tip of the tail and went to bin it BUT halfway out of the breeding room it started wriggling I couldn't drop it as the dogs were watching intently and i was full of bait so I held on and ran to the bin with it twisting in my hand trying to bite!!! Finally after running through my house out the front door I dropped it in the green bin and it ran in under the rubbish. Normally I don't like to leave them to succumb to the bait but in this case I'm not planning on diggin through the bin to find it. Hmmm...feeling a little jittery now!
  9. I would steer clear personally
  10. I didn't mean time, I meant cost Wire mesh is expensive and keep in mind that timber is okay(not treated) but not ideal as it is hard to keep clean. What about THIS ONE
  11. It expires in Feb, so if worst comes to worst we just apply again then and hope the house we want is still there or another one comes up
  12. In all honesty by the time you buy materials you would be better off just looking on ebay
  13. Will they give you the aviary to use? I have budgies in my yard and their sweet chatter is actually uite pretty and to most is not intrusive at all. Where do you live, if you are in Melbourne I might be able to help with something
  14. Just a thought but if you want the character of the budgie but not too fussed about having a super cuddly pet, but one that will still get on your finger you would be better with two. That way they have a constant friend to fly around with but if you handle them lots as youngsters they should still be tame enough to not get worried if you need to get them on your hand. I have a totally non tame pair which often flies around the house and always comes back to their cage in the evening to roost
  15. Well problem solved, buy the new cage and get both  Personally I think white cages are hard to see through they draw your eye to the bars rather than the bird, black is much better in that respect
  16. I know someone who has a pair of zebra finches which she handraised, they are lovely little things and would fly around her house and land on her finger if she called
  17. Yes sadly we did lose the little crested chick, I commented in my diary thread that he was a scrawny thing and the next day I got home from work and he was dead  I have been kicking myself for not trying to crop feed earlier as it is probably the only reason I still have his sister (who isn't crested) The five chicks that I have are all doing brilliantly now though  I promise photos when I can get my card reader working Hoping tonight or tomorrow, the bloke across the road is looking at it for me
  18. Well I have three clutches, a green normal pair, a green cock/blue hen dom pied pair and a green crested spangle/crestbred normal pair who have got chicks with colour now. I was expecting all green normals from the green pair, green pieds from the pied pair (although I new there was a chance of normals) and green cresteds/uncrested from the crested pair. Soooo.... what did I end up with? 2 blue normals from the green pair and two blue normals from the pied pair!!! Plus the surviving crestbred chick who doesn't have a crest but is green as expected looks to a cinnamon! Just goes to show hyou just never know what you'll get sometimes
  19. Incredibly the commonwealth wouldn't give us one when we spoke to them not long ago due to the old default. It wasn't paid until recently as we have moved around a lot due to hubbies work (defence force) and despite still having an account with the same company for some reason they didn't tell us there was an old bill still to be paid  It wasn't until we got a credit report when we were thinking about getting a house that we discovered it, and then we paid it straight away.
  20. During this time I would say to try and encourage her to come to you more rather than forcing yourself upon her, you don't want her to get into the habit of squarking at you and being nippy so I would avoid anything which causes this behaviour until she settle down a bit
  21. I highly recommend the book Creating a Native Garden for Birds by Frances Hutchison, I have a copy of it and it goes through everything from grasses to shrubs to trees and what sort suits which types of birds. It's also pretty cheap if you can't find it at the library, amazon has them starting a $8
  22. Without having seen it in the flesh yet (as it is nearly a 2hr drive from here) the one above we LOVE, we have seen internal photos of it, close ups, etc and providing it ticks the other boxes like building inspection, etc I think it may be one we consider making an offer on Going to see it next week hopefully so fingers crossed it's not falling down  It has only recently been renovated and the verandahs added so should be structurally pretty good I think
  23. After many lengthy (and occasionaly heated) discussions with hubby we have finally decided the time is right for us to start looking at houses. Next week I have to talk to the banks and determine whether we can get a loan sorted, the deposit is no issue and the amount we are looking to borrow should be fine but hubby has a VERY OLD issue on his credit rating which is due to drop off in Feb. We are hoping that given we have no plans to 'settle' on the house until atleast March anyway this will be a non-issue(also because we have to go through one of the banks associated with hubbies work, so they are little more cruisy than other banks). We are looking to buy in a toen called Briagolong which is just near Sale in Gippsland, this is the beauty that is top of our list at the moment My mum and I are going to look at this one plus a few other sometime in the next couple of weeks. This one is on 12 acres with plenty of great spots for aviaries and even a heap of existing sheds which could potentially be converted
  24. It is rather stressful I'm hoping it won't take too long as it's horrid seeing him upset by her
  25. Also sorghum is a waste of money as they generally won't eat it and is often used as a filler in cheaper seeds. It is the one that looks like little red balls
