  1. is 27 days old too early to fledge? cause baby was out of nest box and in the chickie shelter.. baby is fully feathered and being fed by dad on the floor when I checked last all seemed well. Tinsel is attempting to eat (although mostly without much success) on its own from the food I put nearby. And is almost able to perch.. almost...

from what I can see of the photo (kinda fuzzy on the cere) I agree with Kaz, it looks like a male with the bright purple/pink color.
  3. I can only imagine the Birdy Hearse Transport.. should have a bunch of people follow behind you while you drive really slow from one to the other
  4. I'll take a picture when I get home from work and post it first thing. I'm thinking of leaving work early sick anyways, it's one of those days. My chick is about twice the size of yours in the photo... should I have spaced it out more? (Laughing out loud)
  5. I put mine a half inch apart as suggested
  6. here are photos of the splayed legs... I've since splinted them tonight as instructed (to the best of my ability) but no pics of the splints yet. These were taken earlier tonight at 14 days old,
  7. thanks kaz... trying to make the splint now.. I've already added the calcivet to the water and onto the chicks beak tonight... I hope I get this right.. (Laughing out loud), cause it's gonna be a georgous spangle
  8. Kaz, I have a chick who is developing splayed legs, 14 days old. I'll upload a picture tonight but sending my hubby out to get the sponges.. what size is best to buy?
  9. from what I've read I think it's a color adding factor like violet
  10. your birds are definatly goldenface in coloring... which is a seperate genetic mutation than the yellowfaces. The link on "yellowface blues" that Kaz posted is a great refrence, here is another one http://birdhobbyist.com/parrotcolour/peter/yface02.html
  11. good to hear you have some possible dusk babies from that pair! I can't wait to see them feather, I'm still very curious about this mutation
  12. good luck with the eggs, can't wait to see pictures!
  13. awwww cute chickies!!!!! hehe love em. Looks like someone lost a band though *grin*. How old are they?

I LOVE the breeding cage setup you did, I wish I could find cagefronts like that here in the US but they seem difficult to find here. I wonder if anyone in the UK or Aust makes those to ship across the ocean? (Laughing out loud) They look great and I love the space, which should also help with stronger chicks when they fledge. The nestbox looks excellent and with the cardboard entrances is an interesting idea. Hopefully it all works better for you this year and I can't wait to see the results. Do you have the building plans for these that can be PM'ed? (Laughing out loud) They really are nice.

great info!! thanks for posting it. Going to print it off and save for my own breeding refrence.
  16. good luck with the eggs, do you know if any are fertile? as for nutrition, Kaz is right... you should be giving them additional nutrients before the eggs were laid, but if not make sure to give them plenty of fresh veggies like shredded carrots, fresh parsley, spinage leaves, corn or even broccoli are great in any combination you have available (even if they never ate them before they are usually more likely to try new foods durring breeding), as well as boiled eggs (just smash them up with a fork and keep the egg shells in the mash, they'll use it for calcium and protein and it's an all around good food for breeding). also make sure they have access to natural lighting or provide a UV lamp nearby to help them produce D3 which helps in absorbing the calcium in their diet.
  17. (Laughing out loud) the Japanese names are mostly because I love the culture and secondly because my husband is an avid anime fan... we are trying to teach our daughter to speak Japanese as we learn some ourselves and this is a great little way. Plus they are unique names here in America.

Some of my birds have Japanese names (my hubby loves anime cartoons). Others are named for their stature in my show breeding, and others for their color or behavior. The Japanese Names: Roka - "White Crest of a Wave" (double factor dom pied blue, so mostly a white bird) Tenjin - "God of Learning" (this bird is very smart and adapts well, always learning) Yoshe - "Lovely" (this is my first violet budgie, and for a pet variety has nice color/markings) Tori - "Bird" (she was my first tame budgie and has alot of personality) Kenja - "Wiseman or Sage" (he looked like a pudgie budda when I got him, and Budda is wise!) Yuki - "Snow" (he's a blue greywing with very light coloring and almost looks like snow) Others: Bambi - she's the aviary hussy, and has a stripper name picked out by my husband (Laughing out loud) Lilly - She's as pretty as a Lily, my little violet. She's my most tame and gets extra attention. Devin - Gaelic for "bard/poet", he's very vocal and sings alot Duke - has great deportment and looks royal Duchess - she's my first spangle and the "mother" of my future spangle line Dusk - He's grey and reminds me of the evening dusky grey sky Dawn - She's my first goldenface cobalt, and reminds me of the sun in the dawn of morning Zeus - one of my best quality show birds and hopefully the sire of future champions Hera - my georgous cinnamon show bird who was purchased with Zeus, she's a goddess too! Tinsel - my first banded chick who was born on christmas day, The name was gender neutral and reminded me of tinsel on the christmas tree with the violet sky pin feathers. Aster - he's a violet spangle and reminded me of a purple aster in bloom Saphire - a nice cobalt hen, named for color Rowan - this is the rare brownwing that I'm trying to test breed and reproduce, brown like a tree
  19. a photo of the Budgie Bean Soak.... added picture to FAQ used http from this picture didn't not upload to BBC server
  20. it's actually health enough to be eatten by humans I've tried it and it's like a nice salad.. minus the seeds of course!!! (Laughing out loud)
  21. (Laughing out loud) thanks, Mine LOVE it... and what's good is you can use this basic recipe for any of the parot types just substitute your birds favorites and use their normal seed type and viola! For larger parots you can also add peanuts or sunflowers to the finished food. My budgies and tiel go nuts over it, and it's healty enough that you can feed it daily without it causing any issues like most 'treats' do. Mine have it daily and I substitute the fresh veggies with what I have on hand thats seasonal. Here is a photo of of it finished ... in this batch I also added some spinach leaves, cooked pasta and some chili pepers for my teil. (the birds don't have a heat gland for spice, so it won't harm them and they like the seeds inside)
  22. (Laughing out loud) yeah my 3 week old chick is already quite a bit larger than the adult pet variety I have!! 46 grams !! Blew me away with how large they are! The parents are both around 55-60g each and that's after they lost the extra overweight pudge they had from the breeder. My pet budgies are only 30-40g each. My hubby's idea of funny when he first saw my show budgies:
  23. you got some real stunning birds there Kaz, beautiful! I especially love the yellowface grey.
  24. thanks all, took me a couple months of planning to think ahead for things like climate, convience, and especially cleaning it all! Luckily the birdroom itself is about 11 foot by 9 foot, so I had quite a bit of room as well as the ability to use other rooms in the basement area to make things more convienient. I also make bird toys, so that setup is in a seperate area down there outside the birdroom and my birds all get to test out my prototypes. (Laughing out loud), they have fun though... spoiled birds I also have a few birds upstairs in the living areas with their cages who are my "pets" (Laughing out loud). I have an adjacent storage area with spare cages, hospital cage, travel cages etc. I can't wait until I get my new breeding cages to add though. When I get them I'll post photos. I converted a spare dresser that was no longer being used into a breeding cage stand for the non-wire cages and it has plenty of storage for all my breeding and other misc bird items like spare feeders, med kits, scale attachments, toys, supliments and whatever else I need to store away for them. All nice and convient and easy to find in one location. I find that although the birds love the high perches and ropes and swings, they still really get good use of the lower areas of the aviary with all the natural perches which are like a playgym for them and helps keep their beaks and nails trimmed with the natural wood branches to gnaw on. Also each individual wood piece of the aviary frame is easily replaceable if necessary with just a few screws.
  25. (Laughing out loud) I envy you Kaz, I would love to have more breeding pairs.. but we all have to start somewhere I guess. I'm hoping I can get quite a few pairs next year from these chicks. I'm also getting 5 more show types shipped to me from another state with the same bloodlines of spangles and violets. Which will be paired for breeding once these three pairs are done and are in condition to breed. I just need to get one hen to pair with the brownwing (brother to Dawn) I'm going to be test breeding. Then I'll have 3 pairs breeding in the spring here. So I'll have 6 pairs total which will be the basis of my future show birds. I am already looking forward to next year when I can start pairing up the chicks and have a breeding season like yours! (Laughing out loud)
