  1. I find that the baby budgies you buy that were raised on vegies take them easily, but the ones you buy from places that don't feed vegies seem to take forever to catch on to eating them. I grate and shred everything up and sprinkle seed on top of it and take out the ordinary seed dish so that's all they have and find that they come around quicker doing that (of course I put the ordinary seed dish back in after a couple of hours so they don't starve )

Yeah we have a lot of trouble with kangaroos on the roads around here and I know the golfers aren't fond of them interupting their game of golf
  3. Thanks Norm, I know everything happens for a reason but it's still very disheartening when you can't save them all On the up side they are very good parents considering this is there very first clutch and the 3 surviving ones are coming along great.
  4. What do you have....a violet might be a very good idea A normal violet would be perfect as this is the gorgeous little fellow I bought a couple of weeks ago
  5. Kaz…which Norm are you talking about…what are you trying to say? That there's something wrong & I need the help of a vet…mmm…you know I want to keep well away from those avian vets… Hahaha I thought of you when I first saw the post and wondered why Dave was posting about your bottom
  6. Yes I do this everyday also, I probably spend way to much time in there when there is a million other things I should be doing
  7. Sorry can't help you mine aren't moulting in the aviary at the minute!
  8. Thank you all for your input on this subject. Thanks Elly, I did weigh up the pros and cons but as the budgies are only 6-7 weeks old same the 2 I already got from the breeder I don't put them in the big aviary until they are 12-14 weeks anyway so the extra 2 weeks wouldn't be a problem. The breeder hasn't bought any new birds for her flock for over 3 years, she just breeds them and sells them. I thought I would be smart and try Norm's theory of only taking enough money for what I wanted to buy, so at $10 each I took $50 so I could get 5 if I liked them . Haha I came home with 6 because there was only one left and she said I could take that as well because she new it would be looked after well. I will put pictures on later when they settle in better, but this is what I think I have: Albino Hen - (not sure as the eyes look more plum but she is pure white not a mark on her) Violet Normal Hen Grey or Mauve Normal Hen - not sure it's hard to tell Yellowface T2 Blue Opaline Cock Yellowface T1 Grey Cock - (The reason I said Type 1 is because there are no other yellow colors on it anywhere not even the tail - is this right) The free one is a Skyblue Normal Cock.
  9. Funny you should say that, it's exactly what my husband said to me and what made it worse was that I forgot to buy the rabbit food Hahhaha, maybe I should think about that Norm .....nah I don't think so! Any suggestions on what to pair her with next year?
  10. Wow there are some really great names there Phoebe, I'll know which post to look at next time I'm stuck for a name
  11. A couple of weeks ago I bought 2 baby budgies http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....mp;#entry221764 The breeder just rang me to say that she had some more ready to sell and I can see them tomorrow. My question is if I get a couple more can I put them in the same quarantine cage with the 2 I already bought from her or will I have to put them in a separate quarantine cage?
  12. Yippee!!! Everybody now knows what we always knew :fear that this is the BEST site
  13. I ended up taking her to the vet that night as she didn't look good and she died in the vet's hands :angel1: It doesn't look like any of her eggs are going to hatch either but I'll give them another few days just to be sure
  14. This pair now have 3 chicks. The first looks to have yellow feathers coming through on the wings. 2nd chick (ino) was thrown out of the nest, so I warmed it and put it back in, but the hen kept pushing it aside to I tried 2 foster mothers and they rejected it too (maybe they new something was wrong with it?) it ended up dying. 3rd chick is doing very well. 4th chick was half way out of the egg and died before it got out during the night - not sure why the hen didn't help it? 5th chick hatched this morning and it doing good too.
  15. Couldn't resist this little beauty when I went to buy rabbit food this morning. My boys have named her Shiloh. I would appreciate it if someone could help me out with the mutation as pieds have me beaten. The lady said she was 6-7 weeks old but I think she is more like 3-4 months as she seems to be just going into a moult. The colors haven't come out very good in some photos, her bottom of the wings are a lemon color like her face. This photo would be most like her colors.
  16. They are all gorgeous Kaz, love the green chops on the lacewing babies
  17. One of my hens has begun to go through a bad moult while sitting on 5 eggs. She had plucked some feathers to line her nest box but when I opened the box this morning there were way to many feathers for this and when she came out of the box she looked awful, loose rough feathers everywhere. I haven't had this happen while breeding before. I have fostered her eggs to another hen and put her in a hospital cage. I've also rang the vet and he said that the avian vet isn't there until tomorrow and he admited not knowing very much about budgies and I should just keep doing what I was doing and ring again tomorrow. I had a cock bird several weeks ago that went through a bad moult, he was all fluffed up and didn't look good, thought we would lose him but after a week in the hospital cage he was fine. Do you think my hen will come good too?
  18. I bought rings from ebay last year. They are split rings and numbered, not plain. This is the link for anyone that is interested. (budgie rings are the 4mm) http://stores.ebay.com.au/lentradirect-2U_...5QQftidZ2QQtZkm I see they now how rings that aren't split also.

Beautiful budgies Neat, pity you don't live closer to me I could borrow :yellowhead: some
  20. All tests came back negative and vet couldn't find any reason for the cock dying? The only thing he could think of was that all the ones we've had that died have had some congenital abnormality that isn't showing up?
  21. Just an update from the post in March of the pairs I put down that had chosen their own partners. First pair: 6 eggs, first hatched today...yippee (fingers crossed they all appear fertile) Second pair: 4 eggs, cock died last week. Due to hatch 18/4 (I think only 2 are fertile) Third pair: 4 eggs all clear :yellowhead:
  22. Thanks for helping out with the colors. My boys have named them Sinbad (violet) and Thunder for the mauve. :yellowhead:
  23. Good on him, all good things take time :yellowhead: He is a beauty.
