  1. I have two but Lemon kicked her fake eggs out so far Storm is doing the good mum thing so everyone is told to stay the F*** out of the study and even I have to use my sisters computer work, Buddy is in my bedroom and we are going to leave her alone and hope like H*** that eveything works this time...
  2. I was thinking that Kaz I had not heard of Show Names in Budgies but I figure there are only so many names you can use so instead of sounding like a ponce and calling Brandon "Royal Brandon" all the time he has a stable name and then a different name that links him or something..... I thought it might be something like dogs you get a dog and it has this big long name on all it's paperwork and then you call it Bif or something... so the new owner does not feel like they have to call it by that name. I have a Horse who's breeding / polo name is Captain Hollywood Rain... She is called Holly. I figure it gives the owner and "out" to name the bird whatever they want. There is a slot for common name that is not filled in so i am just going to call them Brandon and Malachi
  3. Thats great news, sometimes it is hard to keep a good Budgie down!
  4. okay when I got the two guys for free for the mouse the breeder said that he would send me their Certificates... Did not think much of it at the time but whatever anyway, got a e-mail over the weekend and attached was the guys certificates They sort of look like this http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/prod...=8369&rel=1 They have the Budgies show name (mine also has a scanned picture of the chick instead of the graphic) Parents names and mutations, hatch date, adoption date, breeders name and ring code and his sig. The other form he sent through was a basic history. I know everytime these guys have been wormed had any form of treatment, seen a vet etc.... WOW if he does this for all his birds then WOW. Granted the guy is a stay at home dad so he has the time to do this while the kids are at school but wow. I thought it was a really nice touch. I found out my Guys are Brothers through their father. Show names are "Royal Brandon" at the front and "Malachi Azazeal" the guy behind I would love to do this for my pet types, but am no prepared to pay for a bunch but figure that if I get a template together then I might look at doing this. maybe not the scanned photo but the rest so that new owners have info to take to the vet etc... and know all the details. Anyone else use them? PS anyone ever watch Hex? Cause if they did I think I am going to have to keep an eye on Malachi Azazeal... also if you know anything of the fallen angels then I think I picked an evil budgie!
  5. It's shocking for that split second your whole world crumbles... I was really trying to work out how I was going to tell you that I lost all of your guys! Oh also I am thinking of putting Kadaj (the pied guy I got on the weekend) with DQ What do you think? I so need to get a better picture of him, I also need to stop calling them by name cause I know I am never going to end up giving them up!
  6. Oh so cute you know I am going to come and steal George one of these days!
  7. Very Very Pretty babies!
  8. okay I get home and walk into the study and see NO BIRDS in my top cage, completely flip out think something has happened and then realise that they are in fact both in the breeding box So doing the nightly seed run and go into the avairy with a torch and can only find two birds So I freak out and yes I admit I start crying thinking something has gotten my pretty birds and I knew I should have stayed home today... Then I spot a flash of yellow I look closer and I find BUDGIE TREE! All found safe and sound.
  9. Can I put Buddy in? He is a reject Budgie that no one wanted so MB sent him home with me and now he rules the house! His 'Oh Mum not another picture!' Look
  10. WOW we have some really talented people on the board!
  11. By Paulina Jenkins Willow bark is an ancient alternative medicine. We know this from the ancient manuscripts of the Assyrian, the Egyptian and the Greek. The Egyptians used it as a remedy for inflammation. Hippocrates, Dioscorides and Galen the Greek physicians used Willow bark to reduce fever and sooth lower back pain, inflamed joints and other pains. Since 500BC the Chinese have used it to relieve pain and fever. Willow bark was also used by the American natives to control sexual desire. Willow bark is also called Salix alba and White willow. It is a tree commonly found in southern and central Europe, and central and western Asia. Very often it is called nature's aspirin. The salicylic acid in aspirin is responsible for the pain relief properties. Willow bark is also rich in this active component. Willow bark is an effective painkiller often used for pain as a result of inflammation. These include joint pain, back pain, rheumatism, gout and arthritis. It reduces fever and gives relief to headache, colds and flu. Willow bark boosts metabolism and is beneficial for weight loss. Americans during the colonial days used Willow bark to treat food poisoning, gout, fever and inflammation. It is of benefits for gastrointestinal disorders such as heartburn, colic and sour stomach. This herb can be used externally as an antiseptic to treat burns, wounds, cuts, sores, dandruff and tonsillitis. Generally Willow bark is well tolerated and safe. Pregnant and nursing women must not take this herb. If you have a reaction to aspirin, you must avoid using Willow bark. For those who are undergoing surgery they should avoid taking Willow bark two weeks before and after the operation. This herb could interfere with wound healing and bleeding disorder. It also interacts with some prescription drugs. Sufferers of gastritis and ulcers should avoid using Willow bark. For those who have any liver or kidney conditions Willow bark will aggravate the problem. This herb is not recommended for people with blood clot disorders. Children with chickenpox, viral infection and fever must also not be given this herb. Continual or long term use of Willow bark is not advisable. This could affect sexual desire and damage stomach, kidney and liver. Willow bark comes in the form of tablets, capsules, tea or tincture. 400mg 3 times daily is the standard dosage. A tea can be made by pouring 250 ml of boiling water over 1000mg of Willow bark leaves and let steep. Results from clinical studies have found that combining feverfew and Willow bark produce better effect for a minority of migraine sufferers. Willow bark remains a favourite remedy by herbalists for arthritis, fevers, inflammation, headaches, body pain and heart disease. Researches have confirmed that it produces better result than aspirin. There are other active ingredients found in Willow bark that are not contained in aspirin. It also shows a longer lasting relief than aspirin and does not cause any stomach upset. My Dad said that he use to put it in with the budgies that had aches and pains in the hospital cage with them for a few hours each day and watch for any reaction (he never had a budgie have a bad reaction) Only think he found is cocks who had been on a treatment (one got his foot stuck in a hole in a flight and we thought he had broken it) where not upto breeding for a good 6 months after being taken off the willow bark. That might be because of the injury or the willow bark we will never know.
  12. I don't have a proven hen outside of Lemon and she is bonded with lime so bad that she will not even look at another cock. I do need to find Harley a better girlfriend in the long run i think. Nope she stomps on them! I saw her, but I might try trimming her tail feathers as well to be on the safe side. MB that is a good idea and if we did it in the middle on the night we hit less traffic Going to add a few fake eggs to her box tonight and see if that helps if Lemon is still sitting on the fakes tomorrow then I will transferr them as I see them.
  13. I am hoping that if I leave her alone and try to just sort of wait and see then she will settle. If she smashes another then that's it she will have lost her chance and hopefully Lemon will foster the chicks. Yeah she is a first round hen and only about 2 years old. My big issue is Harley is getting a little long in the tail feathers so not sure who many more round he has left in him!
  14. If it helps we had an old mare that use to be in pain when she ovulated due to a cyst (sp??) anyway she would chew on the willow trees areound certain times and seemed happier. The vet told us that it is a natural pain killer but not that great in taste so animals will work out it helps but will steer clear of it if they don't need it as it is taste nasty. However we did have a bull that use to chew it so much and.... well... lets just say the cows where not as happy as they should have been we moved him into a yard with no overhanging willows and then we gots lots more calves and happier cows so it might be a try and see type thing.
  15. Thanks but how do we transfer them from me to you? All I know is I don't think I will use Storm again unless these babies come out really nice and then she will have her eggs taken off her. It's just so fustrating. Rang the breeder and he said that her sister from the same clutch is doing it to GRRRRR Lucky he has other hens to foster to!
  16. Thanks guys. I think I will see if Lemon is still sitting and keep and eye out for more eggs. I know that Lemon will sit on anything she is going to be one of those hens that I will foster everything to I think. If she is still sitting on the fakes in a few days and new eggs from Storm have arrived then I will transferr them to her and let her and Lime bring them up.
  17. okay so I put Storm in with Harley and well they took to each other like ducks to water... Or Budgies in love . Then I noticed that Storm was hanging around the breeding box so I waited a few days and checked and yes there was eggs *insert happy dance* I could not wait so I candled the eggs and joy of joys I had babies! The old guy did it! However the next day I find that she has smashed all the eggs :hap: A few days later another egg arrives, I did not touch this one just confirmed that it is there and then on Sunday night I hear that sound of her smashing it So really not happy, I don't have another hen on eggs at the moment so I can't foster them out. I know that Lemon will sit on eggs so I have put some fake ones in last night with her and she is sitting on them like the pro that she is when I checked today before going to work. My question is should I leave any new eggs with Storm and just not touch the nesting box for a while and hope nature takes over or should I keep checking and if Lemon is still sitting on the fakes take them out and put them under Lemon? This is Storms first time at breeding so maybe she is just getting the hang of things, but as Harley is an older bird I am not sure how many swimmers he has left so don't want to waste any if that makes sense. Advice please.
  18. Oh the poor baby, and I really thought he was going to make it.
  19. *hugs*
  20. Please no one get offended by this, it's a topic for conversation more then anything. Also Mods if it is in the wrong spot let me know or just move it. Today I was talking to a guy from work about setting up and attempting to breed budgies. I told him about my guys in the aviary and about the guys inside. One of my other co workers was listening and then came around and told me how breeding Budgies for Showing them / Color mutations was the same as running a puppy farm, Comments like "You know that your budgies are just going to end up in some aviary or some kid is going to let them go when they can't be bothered with them anymore..." Ran rife through the conversation. Do I agree with him... Not on the puupy farm comment! but I do think that there are some people out there who think they can make a quick buck by breeding and selling Budges... Not sure how they believe this but hey each to their own. The other thing was that I have a link with my guys, I do love some of my guys in the aviary, Blue is my baby and if anything happened to him I would be in tears, does Blue sit on my shoulder and eat my homework, nope. He is to busy doing other things then deal with his human. But I still love him as much as I love Buddy who does play on my desk. Blue is just not a buddy buddy bird and that is that... does it mean that I love him less then a bird that lives inside full time and can talk? Nope sorry, do I love him more then Brandon a new bird I have gotten in the last few days and want to breed from, yes, why? cause I have to make the call on which birds are my buddies and which are my breeding stock like anyone who breeds anything you can't fall in love and keep them all. He also said that it is pointless to have an aviary and that if we are to keep birds then they should be tamed indoor birds, breeders and aviary owners are just being cruel. So I was wondering for other people, people who breed or purchase through breeders and pet stores so you ever think of the 1000 of birds that we/society cull off each year that are not the right color or the right temperament or don't have a good enough stance for the show cage? It seems that in Australia there are no Budgie rescue centers (and if they are let me know) you can't adopt a Budgie from the RSPCA. I know of a few privately owned shelters that have Budgies for adoption, I got Mozzie through one (who has since shut up shop due to funding issues). I know there are Budgies that I will never give up. Harley, Blue, Flame, Mozzie - My original four, Mozzie more cause I know she has had a terrible life up till now and I would hate to see her miss treated again. Sky - same reason as Mozzie Lemon & Lime - They are my old pair and I love them, they spent 6 months willing me to take them home and now I have they are just really nice birds to have around. They deserve to have each other and comfort in their old life. Buddy - Cause he is my baby and in two days he has managed to wind himself around my heart and chew through about three t-shirts! The rest, as much as I love them if I had to give them up tomorrow then I could as I have marked them as breeding stock in my head. I guess I grew up watching Dad do it not only with the Budgies but also with Horses so I would watch horses that we could not train or did not work with his program drive out the driveway sometimes with tears and sometimes with "please don't jump out of the float till he gets to his destination" So thoughts feelings opinions?
  21. Hi and welcome. Good on you taking on an older bird that was looking for a home. So many never find a new home after being lost from their first one. Looking forward to pictures.
  22. My Dad use to say "10% breeding and 90% pure dumb luck"
  23. Don't you hate that! The Blue guy did look a little rag tag but did look better in person!
  24. Hey in MB's defence none fo her birds looked that bad yesterday! I was a little "Huh what did the kids do to the poor fellows on the way home?" Maybe they are just not super models.
  25. LOL I will see how mine goes with Royal Brandon *giggle* and then let you know. So need my breeding room!
