  1. Kaz, Sounds good, Next time your out there would you be able to take a picture and show me exactly how you do it. Would be good to see, I was thinking of a plastic pocket attached with glue and slide the card into there but would have to make these to suit. Thanks
  2. Hi, I have 6 pairs of Budgies now that have Eggs/or babies. I have noticed a few people on here mark there eggs, Can i ask what you use to mark them as I would like to get into this habit too or do you think its not necessary? Also I have Cards which I attach to my Breeding boxes to record eggs and hatchings from my pairs. I brought some small pegs to attach my cards to the boxes but these Pegs always Break. Can I ask what others do to attach their cards to their boxes? Thanks any ideas appreciated. Wayno
  3. How do i know if my budgies are on an 18 day breeding cycle or a 21 day one? My hen started sitting on eggs on Aug 25th, when are the eggs due to hatch?
  4. I live on a suburban block about 700 squares. The neighbours dont seem to mind the birds at all( we have asked them ) and as there is a lot of large trees in our area with wild bird populations the neighbourhood is used to bird noise. You can ask your neighbours, but ask if they can hear your birds ( dont ask if they are noisy ) and do they mind bird sounds ? If you start out saying the word "noise" is makes them think in those terms. We are lucky. Our suburb is semi rural and we can have any number of birds. Only if neighbours get upset can it become a minor problem. Kaz, I might just leave it a few weeks and see if anyone approaches, I am use to the noise and you cannot hear much noise when your inside the house. I am getting a little excited as I am expecting my first pair to hatch their eggs in the next couple of days. Thanks
  5. I am also in a bit of a predicament...I have just finished my large aviary, in it it has 1 large Aviary for finches, and 2 small aviaries, one for finches not breeding and 1 for budgies not breeding, ALso in it i have a Breeding Room.Over the last month i have purchased around 18 nice budgies to breed and enjoy. I also agreed to hold around 20 budgies for a friend whilst he does renovations to his aviary. With nearly 40 budgies now in the aviary and breeding room, they are making a lot of noise and i'm worried the neighbours are going to get angry with the noise. I use to have budgies before but cannot remember them being this noisy.I really do not know what to do!! they are nice and quiet when its dark but fairly noisy once its light. Also throw in the wild birds around my place making noise too..Do i just leave it and hope the neighbours get use to the noise and im being paranoid or do i approach the neighbours and ask if its too much noise. The neighbours know i was building an aviary. Is suppose once the 20 budgies leave it will leave me withg my 18 budgies would the noise still be as bad? Kaz, Are your neighbours close by, or are you on a large parcel of land?

Daz, When you life the lid on the Breeding Box I notice you have a piece of wood there, obviously to stop eggs or babies falling out... How do you clean the box with that piece of wood there?

I am in the process of building an aviary, I have made it out of timber, I have used Oregan which lasts much longer and is not treated in any way and cannot harm the birds. For the walls i am using Hardiflex and COlourbond for the Roof. I am trying to minimise Timber on the inside so the birds do not gnaw at it all the time plus if you keep them occupied they should do less damage. I purchased my Orgean timber from a 2nd Hand Timber yard and saved big dollars on it. I wanted my aviary to blend in with my back yard so decided to build one instead of buying a galv pre-made one. If you want ease buying a premade one is alot easier as i have been building my aviary for 3 months now and i have the frame up, roof on and guttering so water goes straight into my Water Tank. I will be posting pics soon on the Aviary topic. Cheers

Norm, It will be interesting to see how you go with One COck to Two Hens, Not a bad idea when you think of it, but will it become too stressful on the Cock trying to bring up two clutches at once if the Hens both rear young at the same time. Please let us know how you go.

Kaz, Tuscan Topping is similar to Lilydale Topping, it is a small crushed Rock/Pebble, It is laid on top of Crushed Rock and when set becomes very hard and acts a bit like concrete but you do always get some loose stones on top. Sweeping the bird room up all the time will more than likely also sweep up some Tuscan Topping so I was thinking to make it easier have some sort of covering to make things a little easier. Sorry to hear about your birds today. Do you have any idea on how i can put a diagram on here. Would love to show you my design.

Been delays with the Aviary, Frame hasn't started yet but i'm hoping it will in the next week or so. All this time waiting gets me thinking about the layout more. Another question, Inside my aviary there is going to be a bird room, The floor is Tuscan Topping and not concrete. Can anyone think of something i can put on top of the tuscan topping to make it easier for cleaning and sweeping Cannot put concrete down but there must be something else i can put down to sweep the excess bird seed off. Tried doing a plan of my aviary to show you all but its only in Excel Spreadsheet format and i do not know how to convert that to something else to put on here. Any suggestions
  11. Hi, I'm in the process of building my aviary still and have a seperate aviary to house my non-breeding budgies. Does anyone know if I can house Java Finches with Budgies as a friend of mine told me you can? There will be no breeding in this aviary just a aviary for my birds to excercise and keep fit before the breeding season. Any advice?
  12. Hi CHeekyChucky, What nice birds!! Can i ask you where this breeder in melbourne is? As i also live in Melbourne and would love to go and see him. Details would be appreciated. Thanks

Well the Aviary has finally started, Landscaper has been in all week, ground is all level, flooring and front brick work going in first. Once the walls start will start posting some pictures. Quick question for anyone that keeps different birds. I'm building a large Aviary, and inside this aviary there are 2 seperate flights, One for finches and one for budgies. The Budgies flight will not have any breeding boxes in there. Someone told me i should not put a flight with budgies next to a flight with finches seperated by only wire. Has anyone heard of this before or has a similar set up. I've never had finches just budgies and parrots and would like some feedback before the Aviary walls start going up. Thanks
  14. Hi Everyone, Getting back into Budgies and finches and I am building an Aviary and a bird room. Would love to ask people if anyone knows of anybody in Melbourne that supplies Breeding Cages or Cage Fronts. Would love 6 or 8 cages to start with. I have checked Ebay but nothing in the last 3 weeks. Also have searched internet everywhere for cage fronts but no luck. I'm sure there is someone that builds to order similar to Daz in Queensland! Can anyone help?

Any ideas where i can buy Cage Fronts from? Looked in 4 pet shops near where I live and no one has them. Also looking for someone to build be 6 breeding cabinets or to buy in the Melbourne area. Anyone have any ideas where i can get them from?
  16. Thanks Sco-tie.

Kaz, In relation to the vegies, do they have to be cooked or just raw.
  18. Hi All, Still planning my aviary, going to use Hardiflex sheeting and a timber frame. I would like to paint my aviary but should I? What if any is the best paint i should use? Dont want to harm the birds in any way.

I am thinking about painting my aviary, can anyone tell me whether its good to paint an aviary or not. If it is okay, what is the best paint to use so i dont hurt my birds?

Another quick question, Can I Paint my aviary? Going to have Hardiflex Sheets as the walls and maybe on some of the roof, was thinking about painting the outside and inside. Do you think its worth painting the inside or just leave it? What is the best type of paint to use to protect my birds? Wayno

Hi Cheekychucky, Good to know some people in the same area are on here. I don't have any pics yet as i'm still planning my aviary and deciding on what birds to get. What is your setup like? Would love to see some pics too. Have you had any problems with council, as i want to build a nice big aviary for my birds. Will keep in touch Wayno

Here is my aviary plans http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....topic=14142&hl= My aviary complex was here whn we bought the house, but the avairy was just the two main sections...on the left a L-shaped section and on the right the long section. I have since divided up the section on the right to suit my budgies and breeding them. The section on the right is my husbands for his parrots. We are still working on mine in that we are soon to tile the birdroom area and insulate the walls and clad them inside with whitecoated ply ( melamine ). The birdroom has power and lights and water supplied. There are low wattage night lights on at night to stop "night frights" and the birds DO like to have the night lights on. The aviaries are made from treated pine pole construction. Treated pine is poisonous so care must be taken if using it to cover any pole sections the birds may have access to...wrap with some extra aviary mesh would be good. Ours isnt, but that mainly due to the whole thing being well aged and the birds havent tried to gnaw the wood in any way. The mesh is around 25mm by 12mm rectangular wire. Some of our doors have been made with recycled security mesh screens ( rewired with aviary mesh ). I will try and get some more recent photos but here is a topic when we moved............I now have a lot more budgies than when we moved. http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....wtopic=7998&hl= Thanks Kaz for your feedback. I'm now starting to get worried about Neighbours and councils, Might have to call the council. Where my aviary is situated is a fair way away from my neighbours actual living quarters. And the wire mesh part will be facing my property and no one elses. okay so i will stay away from Treated Pine. I have my borther who is a builder to draw my plan up for me and let me know a rough price for materials. Also still trying to convince the wife, I'm trying to make her part of it but she isnt really interested. But i think i have her 99% support. I also have a dog but he should be alright around the birds as he is getting on in age. I so wanna build this aviary but it is alot of hardwork to plan. Wayno

Daz, I didn't know there were any requirements, I suppose council regulations change state to state, are there any regulations in your state? I had birds at another property in my area, but didnt even think about contacting council. Interesting! Will send them a quick e-mail. Wayno

Hi All, Fairly new to this site, After 10 years have decided to get back into Birds as i have missed it so much. I am looking at building an aviary in the next few months. The Aviary will have three flights inside, 2 flights will be smallish housing Budgies and finches and the large flight in the middle will house small parrots and budgies. I have been thinking about what materials to use to build my Aviary and would love people's opinions or suggestions on what i should use. The Aviary will be approx 7.7metres wide and 5.6 metres deep with a round Paving section at the front. 3/4 of the Aviary will be closed and the other 1/4 open. I was looking at the following (and have the following questions?) Frame - Was thinking timber Walls - Was Thinking Hardiflex - which is similar to cement sheeting, is available in 4.5mm and 7.5mm and is supposed to insulate pretty well from direct sunlight. Roof - Also hardiflex underneath colourbond Roofing and cover 3/4 of the Aviary Internal Sperations for Aviaries - Wodden Frame with Wire/Mesh. Questions What is the best timber to use and what would last the longest? Has anyone ever used Hardiflex and will this be good for birds? What size Wire/Mesh do I Need to house Budgies/Finches and Small Parrots? and to keep mice away. I have this aviary all drawn up in my head but its hard to sketch. All Aviarys will have plants as well. OPen to any suggestions on what i should consider and what i shouldn't. I want to get it right the first time and would appreciate any feedback. Thanks Wayno. P.S Will post Pictures when i start which should be after Easter.
