My New Boy
Bec, Its Wayne here from Werribee you brought some birds off me a while ago! How are you? Can I ask you the name of the place where you brought Spunk from? Cheers Cheers maesie, well no name yet, but I think you may just have given me an idea! Spunk would be a great name for him (with your permission of course ). Thanks Kaz . Yeah, I was so impressed with the bird dealer I went to today. When mum and I pulled up to the front of this old, run down building, I started thinking 'Oh no' (but never judge a book by it's cover!) Inside, I was in there looking for quite a while , all the birds looked so healthy and the cages clean and I didn't see one dirty water dish or empty food bowl. And I was talking to the sales lady about the budgies and she seemed very friendly and honest. And when I purchased 'Spunk' she told me "remember to quarantine" and that "he is due for worming at the end of march", I'd never been told that by any pet shop/bird dealer before! So I was pretty happy and will be going back there again.

2 X Yellow Face
Well good news the 2 Chicks survived the night and are eating. The two adults are really great birds. Yes I have cage bred these birds, the cage is normal size. I have never had any problems before like this even 10 years ago when i was breeding. If i decided to give the pair another clutch could I take out the mother once the birds are big enough and leave the dad in their to feed them. As I said earlier both parents had the blood stains but would rather keep them.

2 X Yellow Face
Here is the story, can anyone help. I have a pair of Bloue Yellow Faces, lovely big English Budgies. I brought them off a good breeder as young birds last year. 1st Round, had 5 eggs and 4 hatched. Babies were doing very well all nice sizes, one was a yellow face the other 3 were blues. Once the babies come out of the nest both Adult birds attacked the young and when i noticed only 2 were alive who immediately transferred to another cage, they are both doing wonderful. 2nd Clutch - 6 Eggs, 5 Hatch, 2 died on our 43 degree day a few weeks ago. I was scared parents would do the same thing, I was ready this time to take the Female away as soon as i saw first sign of babies out of nest. As you see they are wonderful parents who fed them and looked after them very well. Checked birds this morning all three babies were out of nest (2 Yellowface and 1 x Blue) 1 was dead on floor was again attacked one had a little scab on its head. I was so angry, i looked at both adult birds and they both had blood on their faces, they were both in on it. I again immediately moved babies out of the cage and into another one. What do I do with this pair?? They are really nice birds but attack their babies. Should I Sell them, should I try them with new partners, SHould I sell only 1 or do I try them again? They are beautiful birds but I suppose hard decisions need to be made. Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Crested Budgies
I went back to the shop yesterday and brought 2 x Male Crested Budgies. Both were normal greens one was ringed 2006 and the other ringed 2007. So both are young birds, a good size and in great condition. I'm very happy and will try and find partners for them once quaratine is over.

Crested Budgies
Thanks for all the info, A local breeder has some advertised I had a look at them and he has a few nice sized males left ( I think they are Tufted). Do you think it is worth buying 1 or 2 and breeding them? Interested in your thoughts. I have done a bit of reading up on them and you are all right do not breed them together but breed them with a Normal.

Crested Budgies
Hi Everyone, Can anyone tell me any more about Crested Budgies like: How much should I pay for a pair? Are they harder to breed than normal budgies? What happens if you put a crested budgie with a normal budgie? Any info is appreciated? Thanks

After Breeding?
Hi, Im interested to get some feedback from everybody on what they do to their budgies once they finish breeding for the season. (Cage Breeding) As the budgies are well worn out from bringing up young what is the best or preferred way to get them healthy and back to A1 condition. Do you take out the cock bird first? Do you give both Hen and Cock a good rest before introuding them back into an aviary? Would appreciate any feedback Thanks

Help Needed! Losing My Birds
Hi everyone, just thought I would give you a progress report. It has been 3 days now since i had that awful day of losing 6 Beautiful Budgies. Since Spraying the cages on Monday night I have not lost another bird. I am still noticing mites in some places but as i am finding them I'm terminating them. My budgies seem quite happy and the babies I have in my nest boxes have not had any problems. I have decided to let my 8 pairs continue their clutches and then give the bird room a good clean. I cant believe I have never had this problem before. A couple more questions for you all: My sister thinks I should paint my breeding cages, would this be a good idea? Do you think I am having these Spider Mites becuse my aviary is made of wood? Do you think I will be able to get rid of the mites? Thanks again Wayno

Help Needed! Losing My Birds
Macka, I went to a pet place and brought Aristopet Mite and Lice Spray, its all they had, and i needed something very urgently. I will purchase the other products from a supplier I deal with and will make sure I get the right products. I made sure the spray i used killed the mites thus why i double sprayed the cages.

Help Needed! Losing My Birds
The Mites were absolutely everywhere in this one bank of 8 cages. I have sprayed all the cages and sprayed all my budgies, I'm hoping this eradicates the problem. I checked my birds this morning and everyone was happy and I could not see any moving mites. I will respray again tonight just to make sure I have got them all. I beleive that this is now the problem as all my birds were dying throughout the night and not during the day. Fingers crossed all is now over. I have learnt so much and thankyou to everyone who has given me advice. It really makes this forum so valuable. I will purchase the products you have mentioned and hopefully will not have this problem again as I am now fully aware of it. Thanks again

Help Needed! Losing My Birds
Hi, Thanks for your reply, When i got home after work today I quickly raced out to the aviary to make sure everything was okay, thankfully it was, I closely inspected the cages again and found them to be infested with a little red/brown creature, Are these Mites?? I brought some spray and sprayed all my cages, they were everywhere, I quickly took all food and water containers out and washed them. then cleaned all the cages. What I am wondering now are the mites the problem? Reading what you wrote about "coccidiosis" we have had rain in the last week or two, not alot but enough. I will read more about this on the internet, do you know what the sulfur based medicine is called? as i do not have it. My water and feed is changed constantly so i do not think it is the mice, I also trap and bait for mice all the time and have in the past and never had a problem. Thanks for your advice if you can tell me any more info I would greatly appreciate it.

Help Needed! Losing My Birds
Hi All, I've been breeding since about JUly this year and have successfully raised about 30 budgies so far. I have a bird room with 24 cages of which 16 i am using for bredding my beautiful Budgies. Just in the last 2 weeks I have started having problems..... I lost a couple of birds in different cages and im not sure why, this morning like i do every morning I checked my birds and i was horrified to learn i lost 2 Adults and 4 Babies in one bank of 8 Breeding cages. The 2 Adults were in one cage, 2 babies out of the nest box in another and 1 baby in 2 other cages found in the nest box (One had 3 other babies in there) and one had 3 eggs) I am devastated, I dont know what to do. I've been going through in my head what the problem may be. A bit of back ground.... I have only lost the birds in a bank of 8 cages which were brought 2nd Hand and cleaned thoroughly before use. I have noticed mouse droppings in the last 2 weeks as well in the bird room and set traps straight away, and caught only 1 in that time. The Bird room is part of my aviary and is fully sheltered and not enclosed. All my birds are healthy and the ones i lost were fine one day and gone the next. In one of the Nest boxes i found a little blood with little red bugs or they could of been a different colour (Not sure) in the groove of the lid to look inside. I would appreciate if anyone has any advice on what may be wrong. My other bank of 8 cages, I have had no problems at all, thats why im thinking it may not be the mice but something else specific to the 8 cages on the other side. Thanks

Nest Box Material Y/n?
Sunnie, I brought mine from a Pet Produce place. I know too that Petstock Sotres sell it.

Nest Box Material Y/n?
I've been using the Oaten Chaff for about 2 months now. It can be a bit messy as when i open the box alot of it falls out. I only use it once the babies are about 1 1/2 weeks to 2 weeks old. It is also not too expensive, I think i brought a 25 Kg bag for $14.

Nest Box Material Y/n?
I brought some birds off a Breeder a few months ago. He uses Oaten Chaff in his nest boxes. Since then I have used it, it also keeps the nest box clean and apparently the birds can also eat it and it is very good for them. Has anyone else used this?

Hi Kaz, They are ina breeding cage, the babies are nice birds, I have seen one picking at food, but not the other, The mother is very protective, does not like me at all, but she is a good mum and i'm confident that she will look after them. I will check their crops in the morning and will put the vegies in like you suggested. Thanks

Marking And Recording Eggs
The Only Problem i See with those clips is that i have a small piece of timber attached to the door of the breeding box so it is easier to open. Thanks for all the ideas everyone I might go to Officeworks and see what i can find. Wayno
