  1. As I said in my post, Mac and Tess went and got clipped for summer, so here they are, the now short, wiry-haired cairn terriers you all know and love..Mac and Tess Very different when compared to the picture below. I like them long haired but it is too hot in summer
  2. You will rarely see your birds drink. Think of it like this - -birds have to put their heads down to drink. In the wild this makes them vulnerbale, so they will not do it when there is another animal around - namely you in this case
  3. the opaline yellow face blue is a type II, so you are right, it is an opaline yellow face type 2 blue
  4. they look very good. I am assuming the normal light green is the youngest and is not feeding itself yet?
  5. I think you have done a wonderful job, although the noise - must be deafening. Must make it hard to have conversation - LOL
  6. Mac and Tess are Cairn Terriers, like Toto in the wizard of Oz. They have aged over the years, turning 7 this year. Here they are, back when Mac was blond and Tess was a puppy. Mac - Then Now Tess They both got big haircuts yesterday, so updated pics to come soon
  7. Are my eye's playing up or are these rings not going all the way around the chicks legs?? I think it is your eyes. I think honestly it is an optical illusion. It looks like the band stops and does nto go all the way around, but really, stop and think "could another toe be in the way?" What you are seeing is a toe facing backwards
  8. Dave will be here in Perth in a weeks time to visit with me. He is hoping to bring birds back home with him. I have some for Dave and will also organise possible birds from other breeders so Dave can take some birds home with him. I have saved up my christmas moolah. Let the shopping begin!!!!!!!!!! LOL
  9. Well done Deb. She is a credit to all the hard work you put in.
  10. Great looking birds Splat.
  11. Excellent info Liv. It will come in very handy for me over he next fortnight
  12. thanks for he tips, but she is used to the splint now, so she is not eating it
  13. She has stopped chewing at the tape.
  14. I thought they were all pied related - as in clearflight was just a variation.
  15. I agree with SailorWolf here, that is the beauty of pieds. Strange feathers can show up. Some feathers can appear random. If that was a normal bird, that black wing feather would appear normal. On this pied, it looks like it is a clearflight, except that last, longest flight. You have to admire the unredictability of nature.
  16. I am no expert on pieds - Kaz is much better - but my understanding is this. There are two main types of pieds - dominant and recessive. The dominants can be broken up into different regions, such as the Dutch pied, etc. One type is the clearflight pied. This is where the bird looks like a normal, except its flight feathers are clear, as in they have no markings. Soa green clearflight dominant pied will look like a normal green bird, but its flights will be completely yellow. Looking at your pics, I see Dominant pieds, a poorly marked grey spangle, another dominant pied (breeding box with the grey spangled hen) and the bird you have down the bottom is not a pied but rather a YF2 Opaline spangle. I think the thing that is throwing you here is that since he is a spangle his wing patterns are reversed - note he still has a black outline on his wings - and the fact that he is a Yellow face Type 2 as his flights are white/cream, not yellow. He is defintiely not a pied.
  17. Daz has them on hsi web site. You can go to his site, I think it is in ther,e navigate your way around, and you will see it on the site as a PDF document.
  18. I have some dishes hanging up by a very fine chain, and I am worried that is the way that she injured it. I was unable to today, due to having to celebrate my sister's birthday (pleasure was mine really, i quite like her) so tomorrow I am going to go in and do a clean up and fix some of these things up. Funny things is that I have had a bir break a leg before, and it was not the chain, but rather on some wire that was covering a hole. There is no real way to stop it happening as you said Sailorwolf, it is more about harm minimisation.

Glad to see that we be helpful, and that you are spreading the word. Any pics? We all love pics!!!
  20. i like the green spangle to sky blue cock pairing. I do notice that msot the hens that have not layed an egg yet are nto in breeding conditions, as in white ceres. I know that hens can come into "season" given the right conditions. It this what you were hoping for?
  21. birds hide injuries well, so if they even appear to have the slightest sickness you can see in them, you need to act fast. normally by the time we spot it, it is too late
  22. okay, Kiwi is home now, chewing at the masking tape that makes up the outside of her "cast" She has another appointment next saturday at the vet, and I am meant to fly to Perth the following Monday, so I am hoping for a veyr fast recovery, or my mother is going to get a crash course on budgies - she offered, and that was the scariest bit. She was the one who actually bought me Hugo, my DF violet rumped dominant pied. Anyway, she is ina new cage with all the perches removed. She is not enjoying it greatly, but she is inside and can call out to the others, so she will be okay.
  23. Are you getting some birds from Queensland Karen? From Daz in particular?
  24. that is the aim. Everyone has different expactations. Some people breed show birds to win that first prize. Some people own pet types as companions. I prefer the look of show birds, and one day I will take show birds very seriously, but for now, I amhappy to have my birds live in peace and comfort, with a natural looking setting, where the can have some fun and be entertained
  25. Sinc everyone else is doing a thread for their new breeding room setups, I thought I should. I have purchased an old aviary/shed that I will use. It's dimensions are 3m x 1.5m x 1.8m. It needs a little bif of work, but that should be fine. Here is where it will be going. I have begun clearing the area. I will move those pavers. They were where the hexagonal aviary once sat. I plan on laying concrete in this entire space.
