What Is This?
We've been trying to figure out what our birds are doing. Namely Psyche. All three birds get ample out of cage time each day. Cupid and Psyche are getting to be great flyers - no crashes into walls and they are consistently go back to their cage instead of getting lost somewhere in the room. They love coming out and are getting braver in where they land in reference to us. We've noticed some interesting dynamics between Psyche and Baby and we're trying to figure out what's going on. When Baby is by their cage, Psyche doesn't behave much differently. However, in the rest of the room, when they're on the floor or by Baby's cage, Psyche continually seems to harass Baby. We call it harassment not because of physical contact or verbal bickering, but because Baby seems to be bothered by it. Psyche will fly over to be by Baby on her cage. She'll fly out of her house and over to her, buzz around her and go back to her cage. Baby always seems dazed and confused by this. Is Psyche just being friendly? Perhaps Baby doesn't know how to deal with it because she's been without other birds for 15 years. Or is this sort of behavior indicative of a larger dynamic?

Finally It Happens

Biting
It kind of seems to me that Squee just might be having fun. Baby chews on our fingers quite often and your video reminded me of her. Except she doesn't hold onto our finger. We usually box with her when she does that, move our finger around, pull it away, tap her beak with it, etc. She seems to have a lot of fun with it, and when she bites too hard, we just leave her, game over. She's usually pretty good about it. I can totally understand this might not be a behavior you would want to encourage though, and in that case, I'd not give her any sort of attention for it. She bites, just walk away without saying a word. She doesn't get your attention if she's going to bite. Or take away the treat or toy if she's engaged with that. I think covering the cage or moving her to a dark alone room wouldn't be as immediate of a consequence - timing is everything! The lesson might be lost on her, particularly if its a prolonged time out. Turning your back on her for a few minutes would probably be just as effective.

Sad Day
Yes, the latest picture just warms my heart!

Hovering?
Psyche hovers a lot. She's taken to doing it when she wants to come out of her cage. She did it a bunch before we were able to let them out at all. I always figured it was exercise.

Sad Day
That's wonderful! He's really coming around for you. 0.2 mL is WAY more than the drop I had to give Baby, so I'm sorry I don't have any more pointers. The only thing is holding their head firmly between two fingers shouldn't hurt them. One on each side of their beak so you're holding their skull squarely.

Poor Oscar
Hooray!!! Isn't it amazing how fast they respond to meds? I suppose that if they do their best to hide being sick as long as they can, its not long before they can hide it again. In a few days he'll be feeling well enough to start resisting when its time for medicine. Its kind of funny!

Squee's Big Day Out
She's SOOooo adorable! It looks like she had a great amount of fun. Yay!

So What Now?
Hmmmm....! We have to rethink how we're doing this then, work with them more in the cage rather than calling it good. Although our goal wasn't necessarily to tame them a whole bunch, just enough to make it safe for them to come out, so taht they can get exercise and release energy so they're less obnoxious. We kind of figured they would never be very tame since they're older and bonded to each other already.

Sad Day
He's beautiful!!! I'm so glad he's starting to feel better. Obviously such love and care wasn't lost on him! How much liquid do you have to give him? One of my birds was on antibiotics recently and other than initially catching her once she was feeling well enough to put up a fight, it was pretty simple. She just needed a single drop though. Do you hold his head between your fingers? After her head was stabilized, we simply needed to touch the drop to her beak. Perhaps your vet could give you some pointers too.

Rough Day With Animals
Yeah, Baby can be quite pigheaded when its time for her to go in her cage too. *L* We have a baby ball python and a red-sided common garter snake. Since the birds have gotten to be so active, we're no longer taking the ball out when they're out. *L*

Poor Oscar
Poor little guy! Since you got him taken care of so quickly, he'll be just fine.

Sad Day
I would stay with him if you can. If nothing else it'll give you some special time together. It sounds like you both need it!

Freezing Egg?
Hmm! Frozen is better than fresh... Since I'm out of fresh at the moment, I'll see if my guys will like frozen corn!

Rough Day With Animals
Oh yes.... food, the great equalizer! *(Laughing out loud)* Food makes everything better. Unless you get too much of it. *L*

Bath Time
how nice to have such a calm birdie! It almost looks as if his eyes are rolling back in his head cuz he likes it so much.

So What Now?
Good idea not to rush them. Don't want to make them more scared than they already are. They'll come out soon enough.

Blinkie's Love
Too cute!! They're so funny to watch! I love the pictures!

Casper Finally Spoke!
Oh fun!! I dreamed the other night that Baby started talking. *(Laughing out loud)* Of course it won't happen at 15, but she sure mimics sounds. Kisses, doors opening, and native outside birds.

Ozzie's Hobbies
oh too cute!! I just LOVE the expression on his face at the broccoli. I'm gonna have to figure out how to moderate my guys' intake of treats now that they've gotten quite a bit of them for Christmas too. The stuff will probably last all year!

Visiting!
Baby did a bold thing today. She was out and I opened the others' cage so they could come out and join her if they wanted. She was over there hanging out for awhile on the cage and then she climbed down to the door and hopped right INTO it! We were kind of nervous of what might happen, but Cupid and Psyche were more shocked and taken aback than anything I think. They just sat ther eon their perch with a stunned look, like "What are you doing in here?" They didn't know what was going on. It ended up quite nicely, each of them took at turn at the food dish with her and there were no squabbles of any kind. Then Baby climbed up to one of the perches and took a nap while the other two stayed on the opposite side of the cage, looking at her in confusion. *(Laughing out loud)* Is this sort of behavior rather typical if there are multiple cages of birds and they are allowed out of cage time? I kept telling myself that it would be okay because they're not the territorial type and that there was plenty of perches and toys and food in there so they wouldn't have anything to be jealous of. Also, that Baby was going back to her own cage and stuff would help stop any problems from arising from this. Everything ended up just fine, but I was sure to separate them again when I had to leave the room just in case. We've both independantly have wondered about housing them together since they seem to enjoy each others' company and we've wondered if we'd be able to take out the back walls of both cages and connect them somehow. This isn't anythign we're planning on doing anytime soon though, particularly because two hens and a male can have issues. It sure is interesting to watch this little trio of birdies develop and interact!
