  1. I have two chicks one 18 and one 16 days old. One has an orange beak and one has black they have been like this since a few days old. Does this mean anything? These are my first chicks I was kinda expecting them both to have black beaks?? Also the parents are opaline clearflight green cock. And normal violet hen. I thought that this meant I could only get green and green-violet babies. But one of my chicks is violet too. I didn't know this was possible? Can some please explain how the violet managed to show threw? Thanks heaps Meg photos to follow once my camers charges
  2. My Jak-Jak recently laid a clutch of eggs none of which hatched. She threw them out and since she looked very well I allowed her to lay a second clutch thinking i would give her a long rest afterwards. Yesterday she was not sitting on her 8 eggs and today she is crook. She spat out all of her seed all over the nest box. All the eggs were cold so i took them out and the box too. I cleaned out the house for her. Gave her a bit of a wash too. She is fluffed up and skinny. But she has stopped spitting seed and has started eating her owna nd being fed by mate threw the bars. Is there anything else i can do to help her? HEres a picture of my girl.
  3. My young stock have recently grown into themselves and what i at first thought to be an equal number of males and females has turned out to be a vast majority of females. When all this birds were young and showing no signs at all of pairing or colouring up on the cere I let them all in the avairy where there is one pair nesting. And I watched closely and saw no signs of trouble. But now they are starting to mature and showing signs of pairing...Is this a very bad idea to have these unpaired females[about six to eight months old] in the same avairy as my pair who currently have two big chicks in nest? I have been watching and no signs of trouble yet but i know these things can go wrong very quickely. Any Advice?
  4. Wow what beautiful budgies... How did you get the back groundall white like that?
  5. Oh also. I am recovering from an illness so i am home all the time. So I have plenty of time to continue feeding them if this is the best option. Right now I have them in my cleavage to keep them at a good temperature and i feed them whenever they ask for it. Is this okay?? I keep them under a heat light at 34.5c at night. In my room and if they wake hungary i fed them once or twice in the night too.
  6. I am a bit worried about separating the hen because she is sitting on the chicks and keeping them warm. Dad is only coming in to fed them. She has hatched another egg yesterday and i can't seem to get her inteseted in this chick at all. She wont even keep him warm or fed him. So he is in and out of the box like the other little one and being fed by me. The two smaller ones are allot smaller because there were a couple of infertile eggs inbetween these two and the first two hatching. I worry that if i take her out the older two will freeze. They are only just a little fuzzy no feathers yet. But both are doing well on dads feds and mums warmth
  7. My hen injured her beak in a fight and can't fed her chicks. Dad took over feding the two biggest but would not fed the newly hatched bub. As i had no other hens with chicks I have been feeding this bub myslef and keeping him under a light at 35/36C . He is three days old now and eating well seems pretty stong and active and growing too. I was wondering is it ever okay to put him back out with the other two older chicks that are being fed by dad? As this is my first clutch i can't help thinking he would have a better chance in the nest even if its only the father feeding. If i put him back to see if the father will fed him is there a chance of him being attacked or thrown out of the nest? Please any help. Also the hen's beak is split from a fight. right now she is healthy and active the male is feeding her but she wont fed the chicks. should i take her to the vet now? Or should i wait and see. Because she looks very healthy apart form the split.
  8. Well since the only other hen nesting is the one that attcked the other chik I desided to give them a fed lastngiht myself and then put them back out with mum for the night. This morning that are looking strong. but again a little hungary. I'll give mum and dad a chance to fed them but if they don't ill fed them and put them back again. I'm hoping that once mum is feeling a bit better she will take over the feeding again. I can't imagine the hand fed being as good as mothers fed.
  9. There was an unfortunate unforseen fight in my avairy this morning. The result was one dead chick[RIP] And two very sore hens. T he mother of three chicks[and three more eggs] had her beak split and I don't think she is able to fed her chiks anymore. The father has taken over feeding them. The smallest bub was only hatched this morning . Is it okay to let the father take over the feeding? So far he is doing a pretty good job. Do I need to step in and help him. Or should i wait and see if he can handle it on his own? Thanks for any advice. These are my first chicks!
  10. This is my favourite picture. The is Jak-Jak unforunately all these eggs were infertile. She has thrown them all out and just started laying again. So fingers crossed that things go better this time.
  11. The father is this light green dominant pied opaline goregous man and the mother is a normal violet.[the violet colour doesn't show up well in thie photo.

  13. My budgie laid 7 eggs starting on the 1st of december. A friend on another forum said that since none had hatched and she was acting like hse was going to lay again it would be a good idea to remove the eggs. But when i went to remove the eggs i felt some movement. So i put them back. Does the movement mean this egg is fertile? And was my friend wrong, is it too soon to remove them? thanks...
  14. Hey everyone. I spend allot of time watching my precious budgies and I'm really not sure what is going on with my hen. She paired up with a male ,laid seven eggs. All went like clockwork. Untill three days ago eggs number one was due to hatch, and nothing has happened yet. I didn't candle them so i don't know if they are infertile. But today she is out of the nest and doing all of the courting behaviors with her partner again and i even saw them mating? Since this is my first lot of eggs and i don't know what this behaviour means? Also MErry chirstmas everyone. Meg
  15. When i bought my new birds i was given this Sulfa Solution by the pet shop. The lady said that it was to keep the balance right in their tummies because the stress of moving can put the balance out. But the bottle has many warning about how posionous it is to humans and because of this i wasn't sure if i wanted to use it on my birds. So I thought i'd check here first and see if other people are using this product too. Thanks everyone Meg
  16. Thanks guys. He does have all his toes that was the first thing i checked too. I'll keep a close eye on him and see what happens. Oh he is a new bird. So I didn't have the chance to correct it when he was younger. But as long as he is healthy and can be happy thats whats important.
  17. This is McDreamy. My beautiful boy. But as you can see he has a very very wide stance on the perch. While he is obviously healthy, and full of energy he seems to have trouble landing and hovers above the perch for awhile before attempting to land which is often messy and he sometimes has to falls and has to try again. Is there seomthing wrong with my bird? Is he going to be okay? And do you think he is capable of being a breeding bird when he is older? Please help Meg
  18. If i breed my light green dominant pied opaline clearflight male with a normal violet female what do you think i could get?? And What would i have to breed to get dominant pied violets? Thankx Meg
  19. My first pair of budgies currently have four eggs in the nest and the females started sitting just c couple of days ago. I was wondering how much interference is too much? I know not to touch the eggs or chase her off while she is sitting. But is there risks involved with handling the chicks once they hatch. I was told as a kid that if you picked up tthe chick and then returned it to the nest. The parents would reject it because it smelt of human hands. Is there any truth int this? I'm not going to take the chicks from the nest but is the any harm in removing them for just a couple of minutes at a time to check them out?
  20. I have read all over the place that it take about 18 days for your eggs to hatch. But I wasn't sure, is it 18 days from when they are laid or 18 days from when the hen starts sitting?
  21. Hurray! I have my very first egg ever! This great camera with lots of zoom so i can take nice close photos without getting close enough to disturb her in the nest. These are the parents i believe Although this male has also been seen feeding the mother I'm sure you have all seen an egg before i was just so pleased that i wanted to put this up :feedbirds:
  22. I bought this gorgeous violet but i don't know if it is an adult or a bub any ideas? The photos don't show the violet well. IT looks blue here. I don't know if the pics are clear enough. But she has a small amount of the eye rings happening?
  23. I had my first go at budgie photography and i thought I'd share this lovely shot of my birds nesting.
  24. Hey birdy people. I have a picture here of my two newbies. They are recessive pied. But because they have soo much white on them I'm not sure which is the male and which is the female. But it seems to be they must be one of each. Please let me know if you know.
  25. okay now this may be the silliest thing you have ever heard. But since I know i can delete this if i get laughed at i thought id ask anyway. My albino hen has been courting with a beautiful dom pied male this last week he has been feding her and head bopping and all that. But this morning i caught her mating with my lutino male. I have read that they will continue to mate most days threw out the laying period. Does this mean that if she mates with different males during this time that the babies in the one clutch could be from different fathers? Also her cere is brown but not as chocolate as it was earlier in the season. does this mean she is not actually going to lay this time even tho she is acting like it and mating? And just one more thing... if an albino and lutino do pair up will all the chicks be either albino or lutino or is there other mutations possible... Three questions in one. thanks so much im just getting started and i really appreciate all this help
