  1. Why remove the nesting box? I placed it there for when there is harsher weather they could escape it. I clipped wings because this aviary has a small side door only. The roof needs to be removed for maintenence. No roof and birds with wings.. Not a good thing! They proved to me that they could jump to any ledge in there today as I was watching.
  2. Hey all. I've had some experiance with indoor budgies (owning two for the last year) but am quite new to having outside, and obviously more wild budgies. My indoor two are quite tame. These two I have just bought today and very scared of me. I assume that people that house birds outside have these birds untame. Being new to outside aviaries, are there any special requirements these might need? Quick pics. (Pics were resized to 500x375 to get as close to forum requirements as possible without ruining aspect ratio.. hope this suffices) Not sure what to call them yet. I was thinking 'Huey' for the white one as I originally picked that name for a white budgie but could never find one when looking at respectable breeders for my second bird. The yellow has a nickname of '******' because he bit me hard and that word just came out. heheh.. Pretty sure they're female.. Anyone confirm? Also good news.. clipped their wings myself! Was pretty happy with that. Cheers for reading and any comments/info you have. Rob

Haha yeah one of mine has a habit of doing it right next to my ear. Kinda hurts (Laughing out loud)!
  4. Good to see another Adelaidian about! Where abouts are ya? I'm yet to try my hand at breeding, getting settled in with my indoor budgies currently.. Soon to try some outdoor.

Perhaps you should read my thread. I had a similar problem when introducing a new bird. http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=11264
  6. Progress.. Tweeter has major attitude problems now that he has three major flight wings. If he doesn't like where he's going he flies to his cage - From anywhere in the house! Knows how to get there everytime without fail. *shakes fist* Duo is no longer running for his life when I enter my hand in the cage. He is still moving away, just not scared shitless anymore. Hardly any 'jump on side/roof/floor of cage' stuff too. I'm trying to teach him that 'hand = good' as his cage resides up high. I put him on the floor, his cage is high and he can't get to it. I put my hand near the floor, but not near him. He has started to climb onto my hand and as a reward he gets to go to his cage. Hopefully this will help in future. He's also stopped getting himself stuck (see other thread in behavior fora), hasn't done it for a good week. I reckon it's a devil bird and it's just doing it to give me the shits. :budgiedance: Right now the ground is the only place as having both wings clipped means he can barely jump 6" up. His cage is raised, has a ladder to climb up and into it. However if he does a dive bomb (off my shoulder for example) and he lands somewhere where he doesn't have line of sight with his cage he goes wandering. Which generally means find a small crevice and wedge your way in, find it's dark, get ****-scared and wait for rescue. Same deal with playgym. It's no good when he feels the need to glide unelegently downwards off it.

I haven't had too many experiances with Budgies, but my first never did this. 'Duo' a four month old male whenever let out of his cage will walk (clipped) around until he finds himself in a very tight location (he could get out if he wanted to, but he seems too skittish to try) then squark until he a) tires out or :budgiedance: I remove him. This includes behind massive peices of furniture, under clothes, behind curtains, etc etc. If it's dark and theres only one way in/out, he'll get in there and the **** hits the fan. Right now he has got himself behind a small DVD cabinet. He squarked for about five minutes now is just quiet but still in the same position. This is making it so the bird can never be released out of the cage. You can imagine why when it takes a good half an hour to get him out from behind a bookshelf. Rob
  9. So far Tweeter is doing well. Not running at all when I put my hand in the smaller cage. He still hesitates and 'walks' away from my hand when he's on furniture, ground etc. He's also flying about my room (as best to his abilities) at will. Especially when he hear's Duo across the house.. But he only meets a closed door for his efforts.
  10. Thanks for the posts, taken everything in.. Don't worry Lovey, i'm not as silly to introduce into one cage. When these two were introduced they were in a neutral location, far away from either cage over several nights. I actually recorded their first meeting on my video camera. These birds are very loud in the morning and can hear each other (as I leave doors open overnight, to hear for possible breakins/fishtankdisasters/anything) however if i'm home i'll generally have most doors half-shut to keep some warmth in (it's winter here..) Right now Tweeter's in the smaller cage as I assumed it would take less time to retrain, he's already showing promise. Isn't going as nuts as he used to when I enter the cage. Progress already.
  11. My bird attacks my keyboard.
  12. Right now I don't believe my 'boys' are in love actually I think Duo is Tweeter's *****. :hap: When Tweeter says 'scratch here' Duo says 'How hard?' I'm going to try a different approach. Since no one but you Lovey seems to care enough to respond i'm going to try seperating them for a full month. I believe the reason Tweeter has gone wild is because Duo was not tame enough. So as of Today Tweeter regains his large cage to himself, and Duo migrates back to his small cage about 4ft away from me in my PC room (where I spend most of my time at home.) I'll take Duo out of his cage every day, try my best to hand tame him. If he isn't as tame as Tweeter WAS, i'll give him another month. (While doing this i'll be trying to retrain Tweeter.) Rob
  13. Thanks for the reply. I hope to see more from others. To be honest i'm very frustrated, I had a perfect example of a tame budgie and now that I did the 'right thing' and got him a friend it's all gone out the door. I try everyday to remedy the problem but I have had zero progress. Right now i'm quite fed up with them both, but I will try and prevail. Rob
  14. okay, where to begin. I've had 'Tweeter' for about six months, he has a huge cage, about 4ft by 3ft. He was very tame, I could put my hand into his cage and he wouldn't move an inch, just step up when I was close. About 6 weeks ago I bought a second Budgie, 'Duo,' and spent a month training him to not be scared. He was doing well, not flying about the cage, but not at the stage Tweeter was. I introduced both the birds to each other on nuetral ground, and as far as I could tell they were trying to establish dominance. They now both live in the same large cage, and every night it's whoever can sleep on the highest perch first wins. As far as I can tell it's a dominance thing. They also raise their open beaks at each other, and sometimes nip each other. These days, if I put my hand in the cage, they will both run/fly for their lives. It's extremely difficult to get either bird to step up to be removed from the cage. When I do eventually get them out, they are agitated at first, then settle down. For example right now they are out of their cage, both on my shoulders, chirping constantly. I believe they are happy where they are currently. Though they are very hesitant to step back up, sometimes even trying to fly away to avoid my hand. I read somewhere on the net one way to get birds to be un-scared of hands is to get a hold of them securely and keep them there for ten minutes at a time. I've been doing this, doesn't seem to be working. All I receive from both birds are sore fingers from them trying to destroy my flesh with their beaks. So what i'm trying to find out is, why have my birds gone from quite tame to untame in their cage, and is the holding method correct. Also what else can I do to further progress. Regards, Rob
  15. Alright my partner and I decided to scrap the Hawkeye idea because we came up with something much more suiting. Whenever the bird would chirp, it would be two chirps together, every single time.. Because of this, we thought 'Duo' would be a good name. Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Duo is stepping up every now and again, has flown to me on two seperate occasions (well glided more, having both wings clipped) and is quite happy to sit on my shoulder. Not bad after it's second night with me.

Here's my new cage, picked it up for $90AUD after some haggling. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v724/vip...s/largecage.jpg Here's a comparison to see how big it actually is.. Take note of the smaller cage holding the quarintened new member of the family.. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v724/vip.../comparison.jpg Edit: Photos were over sized 450 x 450 is the Maximum size.
  17. Aviary said it was male but could not help me on mutation. I'm taking her word on it that it was male as of the extremely slight blue in the cere. He's currently in quarantine, plan to have him there two weeks. Right now i'm thinking of the name 'Hawkeye' dedicated to the lovable M*A*S*H character. Any other ideas? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v724/vip...ds/newbirdy.jpg Edit: Photo has been changed to a link as it was too big. 450 x 450 is the maximum.

Yeah I always thought that 2c with frost would make one dead bird.
  20. Click here, small download, let me know your thoughts. Is Tweeter enjoying some millet, and my current cage. It's not the largest, but it's home until I move into my new place sometime within the next month. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4dAPf0ZlEw

Generally my male does it when it's frightened or stuck.
  23. Your partner looks like a pirate!
  24. The aviary where I bought my budgie also only clipped one wing. What problems can arise?

Must be a bird thing, Tweeter enjoys browsing the forums with me!
