I've been watching this thread since day one, and I must say.. I demand more pics!
  2. Name: Pidgie ( recessive cobalt pied ) Sex: Female Colour: N/A Other mutations: Spangle
  3. In my experiance.. Yes, he will change. My first bird was a young male and we spent a lot of time together, very, very tame. Once my second male was introduced it all went out the window in a matter of a month. They pay attention to each other, not you, and act more 'natural' then human-tamed. I still believe that having them together is the way to go, you just must let them do what comes naturally. You don't need to get different sexes, two males will bond and be very happy together.
  4. At first my budgies won't go near 'THE GREEN EVIL STUFF OF DEATH' but curiousity gets the better of them. Have a set 'new food area' and use it. My birds go for baby spinach, whole wheat pasta, green beans, rice, chilli.. Right now i'm trying to introduce them to carrot by they don't like the ORANGE STUFF OF DEATH yet.
  5. (Laughing out loud) all the birds in my house are now dead quiet. .. Wait there they go again!

Yeah, 5 weeks is just the beginning. 5 months is more about right

I thought I might jump on the bandwagon. Think mines a little bit odd compared to the rest, but I think it does the job. :dbb1:
  8. Once again thanks for the replies, all. I do now believe that a heart attack of sorts was the cause of death. The sound of the blind closing (venitians, it's not a quiet thing) was the direct cause of death. The bird jolted violenty when it happened, then seconds later dead. I believe it had another heart attack then, final. It makes me wonder if that I had put it in a quiet place it might have recovered overnight. I doubt it, but there will always be the mystery. I won't remove the video, reason being for educational purposes. I was searching the forums madly for threads similar to mine, but found nothing of use. It may help someone in the same situation I was earlier in.
  9. The budgie training room is my study, where I spend most of my time when not on site I work in here on the computer. No fumes at all. By the sounds of it you've lost a bird in the past? It's all very new to me, whenever i've had a sick or injured animal i've been able to treat the problem and never have I had an animal die on me from non-natural causes. Edit: I'm trying to work it out in my head. The blind closing scared it literally to death. Heart problem? Birth defect?
  10. Thanks for the reply Eterri I appreciate it. The bird was in-training so away from the flock, in the single small cage. (If you can call four a flock.) So there is very little chance that I can see of the others from catching anything. I won't be taking the bird in, as right now finances are quite tight. As much as I would love to know what was the cause of death, I imagine the costs to be ridiculously high. The bird has been removed. I am still very annoyed (my wife asked me to calm down as I was storming around the house like a madman ranting) that the fact that if this was caused by myself what could it have been. My wife tends to think a insect bite, spider bite. I doubt it personally. It was .. disconcerting when after removed from the cage it was rather stiff. The bird was not even a year old. What a total waste.
  11. Have taken small video to show the seriousness of this. Please view. Realise this is a video of a sick bird on the verge of death. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkpXhW9EzjI I have cleaned cage out and sprinked seed on the matt, as well as water in an easily accessible lid. Thanks Eterri, I realise this, however all vets are closed where I live. There are no 24 hour emergency vets I can go to. To make matters worse there are no avian speciality vets in my state. If she makes it through the night i'll take her to the local tommorow. Between my last post and now, the bird has passed away. From the movie where I placed it, I closed the blinds which are close. The noise must have spooked it, it kind of 'jolted' and it's mouth opened, and that's where it stayed. I just don't understand WHY this happened. Not seven hours ago this bird was completely fine. It took SEVEN hours to go from normal to dead. I'm pretty pissed off to be honest. If an animal in your care dies for a certain reason, you can learn from the experiance and make sure it doesn't happen in the future. But I treated this bird NO DIFFERENT from my three others. 12PM today bird normal, fine. 7.26PM today, bird deceased. No ******* idea. -out.
  12. Help guys, my first real problem with birds. I've come home from work today and my female budgie was in the corner of the bottom of her cage, wings spread a bit away from her body. She can hardly move. To the point where I could put my hand in and remove her from the cage without her being able to run or move away. She did squark a few times but that was it. The bird had both food and water supplied. I currently have her on the ground with food and water within extremely close reach. It was roughly 28c all day today but the bird has gone through much worse weather than that. Any ideas? I and her are very distressed.
  13. What i've found is that people forget to say that budgie taming takes not weeks, a lot longer. Six months on average i'll spend with a new young one. I'm on month two with my newest and she'll still run given the oppotunity. Lots of progress though too.

Good read. I'll be doing something similar to this in a years time, be great to get some insight into it before hand.
  15. My birds will pick a corn on the cob clean in a few hours. :grbud:
  16. Update! *HUGE* thanks to Bubbles for the miracle cure via mail. It's been nine days since Tweeter was treated. Tremendous progress. You can hardly notice any of the problem now. Most of the fluff has grown back also. And now, a picture story. Yeah.. You're not getting near me. Seeya! You found me! ARGH MY EYES!?! TO THE CAGE!! *whoosh* Why did you bring him over here? I was happy by myself!! What has he got with him..? He found me! Argh he's coming inside our home! Run! I'll never release my grip! Yeah I was bored. :bluebudgie: Just happy all is well again.

My male Budgies did this when I first introduced them. Took them about a week to get over it.
  18. Thanks to a kind member on this forum there should be a bottle arriving in the mail early next week.

Will definately have to give that a go. So it's just cut up lettuce? Or a big lettuce leaf?
  20. Hey all. For Aussie's out there, i'm trying to get some Ivermectim but apparently it's illegal to get without seeing the bird, which will cost me no short of $60ish. The drug itself is $12.50.. Does anyone out there in AU able to secure the drug without consultation?
  21. Thanks for the reply. I'm quite happy to go to a vet and pick up some medication, i'm hoping someone can confirm what it is. Tweeter is roughly 11 months old now. Gone through his first moult. Edit: Thanks for the reply Bubbles! I'll be off to get some Invermectin ASAP. Never heard of the baby-oil treatment but I believe that with illnesses you should go for the sure-fire way of treating. This way i'll have the medicine there incase it reappears also. Glad I found this forum, without it I would never have heard of scaly face let alone it's treatment!
  22. It seems to be spreading. Is this the dreaded scaly face i've heard about? How does one get this virus/disease? Tweeter has never had contact with outside birds. How to treat this?
  23. Hi guys, thought i'd show you a stand I made recently. It's nothing special, but it doesn't look bad and does the job well! This is it in all it's glory. I hope the picture size is close enough to the admin/mods ideal size. In total it cost me $35AUD to construct and about fifteen minutes. For the Aussie's out there I bought everything from Bunnings and BigW. From Bunnings I bought the wood. It basically fits itself! In the timber department you can buy the bottom blocks (a heavy chipboard) that were offcuts. Usually cost a few bucks each but the guy that helped me find the offcut box said I could just have em! Bargain! Next was the bottom hole fitting. A square type shape that slims as it rises with a hole in it for a dowel rod. $3~AUD. The large dowel rod cost $4AUD, just make sure you get the right size to fit the holes in other bits. The top hole fitting is rounded which is better for securing something to it, and comes with the hole for the dowel. This was a bit more at $8AUD. Next trip was to BigW where I picked up the play gym for $20AUD. It's a small size, but almost $15AUD cheaper than at any aviary/petstore! I attched two bits of chipboard together with hot glue first, then nailed in for extra grip. Then glued and nailed the bottom fitting to the chipboard. I then glue and nailed the gym to the top fitting. Then lastly I hot glued the holes *a lot* and slide the bottom and top of the dowel rod in, and held. It's very secure, the birds love it! I think the height of it gives a bit of security. It's about 150CM high. Easily movable to any room your in, it's great to have the birdies next to me if i'm at the computer or lounging around. Rob
  24. Thanks for the replies as always Lovey. I reintroduced the birds tonight on a stand I made them. At first they had a bit of a fight but it's been about six hours now and they're a lot better. Tonight i'm putting them in seperate cages still, but over a week I see good things. Ironically it seems Duo is more happy to jump on my hand (the jump on hand to get to cage trick worked awesomely) and Tweeter just flies around me if i'm taking Duo anywhere. I've found that the whole attitude with wings thing is true to how everyone says! Once the budgie grows it's wings back their personality does change! Tweeter flies off quite easily these days, even though i've tried to keep up the attention. I think it's just how he'll be. The month's apart was the right thing to do I believe. I'll repost after they're back in the same cage. Hopefully they won't go back to being scaredy-birds. Here's a picture of the stand I made. The gym I bought seperately and attached it to the top. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v724/vippin/stand.jpg Rob
  25. The roof isn't in need of repair. It is firmly secured with no chance of escape. It doubles as a door when needed, after four firm latches are removed. You can see the full aviary in the first picture. The nesting box never produced problems for my indoor birds, they explored in there when they wanted to. Just extra fun. Especially when i'd throw a treat in there occasionally.
