A Trade Well Decided
What do you mean by a Double Factor Sky Blue Spangle split ??
-
What Mutation Are They?
Jen, no 3 may not necessarily be split recessive as many spangles have a spot or patch on the back of their head as part of their early inheritance......and I agree with no 4 being a DILUTE

What Do You Think
He is a beautiful boy. Give him a go when he looks a lot better than he does in that photo...........maybe when the colder weather is over and it warms up

Omelette's Babies
i see, thanks for the info mate. ive really only got 1 "long" showtype, and he's 7 yrs old, so he's only in the aviary to watch all the young blokes get the chicks while he sits their and does his thing hahaha. although he has a little lutino hen playing with him and grooming him, hope they dont breed though, cause he's too old He doesnt think he's too old I'll bet. I have heard of budgie cocks being Dads at 9,10, and 14 years of age. Dont write him off too soon

How Many Will Fit
There is sometimes a formula for minimum perch space that applies but best way is for you to say the size and people who are expereinced will advise the best quantity for the space based on their knowledge and experience ( also breeding or not in the space ....colony breeding or not....comes into it too )

Please Help With Cages!
Why? Front to back perches enable flying across the cage. Perches running across cages tend to make the birds sidle along them.

Mice Issues..argh!
Be very aware that mice going through the birds food can cause deaths in your birds in 24 hours. First things first get the food up off the ground or off mesh walls so mice cannot get to the food. Throw out all in the existing food and start with fresh food. Raise it up on pedestals and platforms that a mouse cannot get into. Mice will get through the average aviary mesh that is 25mm by 12mm...they will get through anything 12mm diameter, including bars of cages. If your aviary has mesh down to ground level, put some tin sheeting on so a mouse cannot get a foothold and get up and through the mesh. Mice can climb brick walls and wood. They can run upside down from aviary mesh on the roof of an aviary and drop onto the food. If the cage or aviary is against a brick wall the mice will run up and across the wall and into the cage or aviary. You need to buy traps and bait boxes for hidden poison. You need to think like a tiny mouse and block access into the aviary. You need to check the aviary from inside as often they are living inside in the first place. If you have soil floor aviaries then you will find they dig their way in, they can even dig through some concrete depending how thick it is. If you find mouse tunnels, flood them with a hose and water and be prepared to kill the ones that run out when you do it. Free food at your aviary will support a colony of mice.....they breed up fast so you need to be serious about knocking the problem on the head.

Splayed Leg
I see you have now added a photo to your first post that wasnt there before. Cute cute little budgie. I am glad you brought him home with you. Budgies dont often pick on the disabled budgies. I have a few in my aviary and they all get along with the others and vice versa
-
Splayed Leg
It varies. Check for malformed bones or breakages as well...what may appear at first to be splayed leg can be deformity or injury.
-
Splayed Leg
Another member has just posted about splayed legs also. In a search you will find we have covered this topic and also added some helpful articles to assist. Earlier the better for fixing it....the makeup sponge method covered in an article on BBC forum will help. The only reason your first attempt didnt was the holes were too big allowing the leg to pull back out. Dont blame the Dad. Its more often than not a lack of enough calcium than anything else. Some say Mother sitting too tight or no concaves in nestbox. Those things can contribute but lack of enough calcium is usually the most common cause.
-
Splayed Leg
Some say splayed legs happen due to the mother sitting too hard on the chicks in the nest. Some say its due to no concave in the nestbox and the chicks legs slip out from under it. More often than not it is due to lack of calcium. AND whoever is breeding their birds should pay closer attention to the chicks in the nestbox as the signs are there early enough for it to be fixed. A search on this forum using the search function and typing in SPLAYED LEGS will bring up a lot of earlier topics including how to fix splayed legs in younger chicks in the nestbox. Once its past 3-4 weeks its too late to fix.

Some New Birds
Vet Dave. We are currently dealing with our vet with a princess parrot of ours who seems to have PBFD...its a worry, and contagious. Your hen seems to be dealing with more than the average FM to me.

My First Breeding Attempt
Even though it has the appearance of a double factor dominant pied, I would suggest it is a single factor dominant pied...very lightly marked. But since you bred two entirely different pieds together it could also be a recessive pied. Has the orange beak of a recessive pied. I guess you wait to see if iris rings show up

Some New Birds
I have never had a french moult budgie that lost feathers down to the down feathers. Are you sure its french moult and not PBFD ?
-
To Clip Or Not To Clip
Wish I could help. I have never had a clipped wing budgie and appreciate their natural urges to fly and delight they have in flying. BUT I dont have indoors budgies, so each to their own.

Natural Seed Bunches
They love it. If you are referring to the green bunches of seed...they go mad on it. I sometimes buy it for a treat for the kindie cage babies or the mums with babies in nestboxes. If you mean the dried millet sprays ....same rule applies
