Age of birds ? Definitely male and female ? Cere colours ? Photo of your cage and nestbox set up. See in my signature ( this post ) a link that says how to post pictures so....where is your breeding box ? LOL posted just after I edited the bread into breed
  5. Hi Roller and welcome . the new improved diet should have been well in place and well established long before now. its part of normal dietary practices for the birds and part of preparation if you are breeding to have the diet right long before breeding is thought of. also when you first get birds they need at least a few months of settling in before you put them down to breed.
  6. Definitely female lutino PS eyes dont start to turn red....they would have been red right from hatching.
  7. I would do EVERYTHING GB suggested as it would be my plan of attack as well. The rat thing ? I also agree with GB...if it was a rat you would find the remains of a half eaten budgie body, usually with the whole chest area eaten out and head gone in most cases....not a tail issue.
  8. We will put it to the original owner/creator of BBC for you JB
  9. Great write up Dave....dunno about you but I am waiting for photos
  10. I have one I was given....its a show cage with a plexiglass front

Since you seem to live in Perth....go to Swan Valley Birds...they often have bush budgies there .....around $30 each.
  12. I agree with Dave http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ak9jcuB2GjaL5JBEtK8HC.GYDH1G;_ylv=3?qid=20111202121256AAsz5SL
  13. I am sorry....I have to agree with GB. Birds are different. They can carry hidden illnesses and these usually come out with stress. Stress is a stranger sharing cage and space sporadically. I wouldnt do this. Cats and dogs can travel back and forth for playdates but not birds.
  14. Hey Splash From what you have said I would say just keep doing what you are doing. Your budgie seems perfectly happy with the interaction with you and sometimes adding another budgie just brings stress and additional problems. I would say NO....dont get another, just keep things the way they are....great job with the taming and training too by the way
  15. I fixed your dodgy link so the photo can be seen. Dominant recessive ?? Cant be both visually... one is either a dominant pied or a recessive ... so far looking like a recessive pied male but I wait for other photos. in asking for identifying the mutation you need other photos, ........iris ring or not ? and back and tail photos too showing wing patterns. How old is this bird ?
  16. Stunning !!!! and saleable...... go market yourself mate
  17. Hi Tony, I hope you get your new budgie friend. As far as sexing goes, any experienced person can sex them at that age so try and go with an experienced breeder. Most pet shops get sexing wrong. Young male budgies have a bright pink to pinky purple cere. Any white on the cere is usually female including if the white is with blue. Cheers kaz
  18. The budgie isnt a dilute as GB says........could you please post photos front and back so we can help you work out what you have ?
  19. If you "know" its a spangle, maybe dilute then posting full body shots so experts can have a look will determine positively what is is ....and not a maybe this and maybe that.
  20. the job we staff have is to put topics in appropriate places....this seemed less of a whinge topic and more of a general breeding topic related to show birds........hence the move. Besides in its own topic it will get more attention.
  21. Your 12 week old needs to be removed from the aviary....no under 12 month olds should be where nestboxes are. They try and go back into nestboxes and can and will fight over the box. 12 weeks old females have been known to lay eggs although they shouldnt. Presence of nestboxes with underaged budghies force breeds them. The aviary, while it seems adequate should really only be housing the tiels at the moment in time. Its really not big enough for the breeding activity and the birds you have in it whilst breeding. If not breeding in their it would be different.
  22. The bird you have described seems to be a male who is trying to pair up with the female. He would most likely not be the "attacker"...that would have been a female and likely the one you described earlier in this topic. How many budgies do you have in what size space ? How many males and females ? What ages ? How many nestboxes ? and how many clutches has this female had so far in a row ?
  23. The important point to make here is.......you bought culls. Show birds are culled for various reasons........a family line that may not be at all fertile is one. If you are buying showbred hens then you have to buy them as babies and not previously bred ones. Previously bred hens may also have been culled for a reason, .....i.e. egg eating, not sitting, addling, only 2-3 eggs, bad mothers etc. Both sexes casn be gotten rid of because they eat eggs or addle all their eggs in the nestbox. Really important is you breed your own hens and buy in cocks. Buying in hens that arent babies and waiting till they grow ....is like playing russian roulette.....most of the time. Show breeders will not keep birds with low to no fertility. Culls are the scrap heap of breeding birds....every now and then you get a win. Most show breeders also put their birds on doxy before breeding to increase fertility and knock out any hidden bugs.
  24. Buy some budgie starter and mix it half and half with handrearing mix at this age. Budgie starter has whole seeds in it which he would have been getting from his parents.
  25. NO. She would kill that chick because its in her nest where she has laid eggs and she would be territorial against anything that seemed like an invader to her nest. It would be different if she had a nest with chicks of similar ages. These are the hazzards and perils of breeding colony style. Forget the mouse theory.....the other female did this. And once a bird is dead in the aviary the others begin to eat it....so no to the mouse theory again. AND if you have mice going through your aviary its time to stop and fix that issue or you will have sick birds. Make sure that NONE of the birds in an aviary where nestboxes are are undergaed....none in that space can be under 12 months of age and no hens over 4 yrs. Aviaries should be the space they all fly and have fun and breeding should happen by pulling pairs out into a breeder cage...one pair one cage one nestbox. Read this http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index.php?showtopic=28294&hl= Solution ? YES you are now going to have to feed that baby. Putting mum and dad and baby in cage from an aviary at this stage now wont help. Mum and dad will pace the cage because they are used to more space and its highly unlikely they will feed the baby now after the nestraid and after moving on. At the age your chick is Dad would have been its primary feeder anyway not the mother. You could try putting the baby and the Dad in a cage and see if he feeds it before you try raising it yourself. You wont need the mother at this stage.
