My New Breeding Season
I am looking forward to the babies coming out of nests this breeding season. I am using a lot of the better youngsters I bred who are old enough. I have filled around 30 breeding cabinets and all the rest of the birds in the aviaries are jumping out of their skins for their chance to breed too. I am trying to make the new corner units for my breeding room and another vertical bank as well which will add the last 12 breeding cabinets to the birdroom and leave it complete. I will do a revolving topic here and add photos of the breeding pairs as I get them organised. PAIR ONE Dommie pied hen bred by Carl Alder and Green Cock bred by Rob Dunstan ( cocks father Gazzard bred bird..and this cock was selected for the nationals ) Hen was about to lay her eggs as you can see by her posture cock EGGS.........two PAIR TWO Omelette cock eggs three PAIR THREE GREYWING TO GREYWING.........a pairing from before that yielded a very good result six eggs PAIR FOUR dilute dom pied hen and greywing green cock ( second round ) currently on six eggs more to follow....

The Creation Of My New Breeding Room
Exciting The old aviary isnt beyond redemption. Offer it for sale here at a reasonable price and someone will want it. Or could it move down the yard and add onto the other aviary ? Will you be adding more breeding cages ?

drop dead budgies
Part of owning birds is not just having money to replace them but having a fund saved up for vet fees when things like this happen. If you think you arent old enough to do what has to be done then you need your parents support. I say again................you still do not know what killed the others..........whether it be from disease, no quarantine, bad management by you as a pet owner, bad conditions in the aviary. Until you fix what went wrong or know for certain what disease went through there is no point adding more birds. If you have money to buy more birds then you should have used that money for an autopsy on at least one of the birds. Then you would have a real answer you could work with. Meanwhile study up on psittacosis, coccidiosus and quarantine.................all facts available on this forum and learn something from it.

drop dead budgies
Since you have no clue what the others died of and have no real solutions, NOW is no time to be adding more budgies. There is obviously gaps in your knowledge and practices with regards to keeping your budgies safe and healthy. You would rather listen to petshop staff re advice and you havent addressed any of the advice you have been given here. I wouldnt advise you getting any new budgies until you know what went wrong and killed the others

Tips On Candeling
You dont need to remove or handle eggs to candle. Transfer of bacteria to porous eggshells is a risk. Its just not a necessary risk either as there is no need to handle and move eggs about.
-
Tips On Candeling
Wait till the eggs are around 5 days old. Dont remove the eggs to candle them. Get the hen out into the cage and while she is out use a bright penlight torch or candling torch ...put it behind the egg ( in the nest ) and shine it forward to you where you can see. Looking for pinkish reddish glow and veins at first.

Getting Hens And Cock's In Condition At The Same Time
Wow I never new this, thanks I always knew that changing diet dramatically would force a moult, but I never thought of using this fact to an advantage by creating moult time at a more convenient time and bringing them all into condition at the same time either.

Not too early to tell for most of us on here. We will tell you straight away once we see a picture. Take it with natural light conditions and no flash on the camera. Clear cere shot ( cere = nostrils )

Getting Hens And Cock's In Condition At The Same Time
Excellent advice

drop dead budgies
I would look more towards psittacosis or coccidiosis than anything re lead poisoning Ratzy. Answers re conditions in the aviary needed...........wet or damp ? which would account for cocci. New introductions could have introduced psittacosis. Both fatal in a short period of time.

The Budgerigar Program

Getting Hens And Cock's In Condition At The Same Time
He would be humping everything..................alive and not alive....drinkers, aviary wire, feed dishes etc. He would be trying to chat up all the girls in the aviary and some of the boys as well he will be trying to "step aboard" every female there is and sometimes get so frisky he will try to mount the males

Pet Shops/breeders In Sydney?
The average breeder doesnt register anywhere as there are no licenses needed to breed. Budgerigar clubs have breeders of course but 99.9% would be breeding show budgies. We have a list of members who breed in our for sale or wanted to buy section on here.

Quick Question..
Hay will make birds want to nest and breed in it. It also will attract moulds. I would suggest white sand ...the kind they sell for childrens sandpits You can buy that sand by the bag at garden places if you only need a small amount.

My Aviary Progress
What guage is the wire ? Some of the bunnings wire is very thin guage and the joining clips and tool dont cut the mustard ( i.e. "work"too well ) Knowing the width of wire you can buy first nand building the aviary to accomodate the wire width is often the better course of action. Good quality aviary wire comes in 90 cm, 120 cm, and 180 cm.
