Quails are in Kens aviary because its big and soil floors. Mine is concrete floors and I am not a fan of quails. I will support and care for the ones we have but I wont put them in with my budgies

Our Other Birds
I now have a baby quail inside. Found it laying on its side in the aviary so I have it inside and I am feeding it too. I will put it back when it gets stronger. Word of warning to anyone who may think of trying this Baby quails get out through the bars of a budgie show cage. This one did. The cage was on the bathroom counter and I found the baby quail sitting in the bathroom sink

"sparky"
They arent wrong..........he is a baby fresh from the nest. I can tell.

"sparky"
Only just out of the nest is too soon to be sold and go to a new home. They need a couple of weeks being shown how to eat by their Dads. Watch him closely and be very sure he has food in his crop as they can pretend to eat and not be eating at all.

Runny Poo

G'day, Newbie Looking For Some Help, Please.
Check out the breeders we have on our forum here http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index.php?showtopic=18921 and others near you may answer in your topic Welcome PS if you buy birds from different places you will need to quarantine........seperate cages, seperate airspace at least 5 metres away for 30-60 days and this will help in not transmitting diseases.

Prices and costs are a KILLER but they are NOT the only reason the hobby is in decline.

Are Auctions Killing Our Hobby
I too give away birds to beginners as I remember where and how I started. Too many clubs complain about the lack of new members or juniors in the hobby. A lot of newish members fall away when they see the costs associated with the birds and often because they have been sold "dodgy" birds from other breeders Auctions are only a small part of the problem as far as "killing the hobby " goes There are many other reasons the hobby is in decline In my experience ( my opinion only ) 1. Clubs either dont know how or dont try anything new to bring in new members. Suggestions put forward are often dismissed by older more long term members. Times have changed and its time for new methods. 2. Many newbies have been bitten by less reputable breeders who sell them their useless stock. These newbies then either fade away in disillusionment or they dont come back to buy again. They may see everyone as the same as the breeder who sold the bad birds and then have no trust in other club members. 3. The world just gets real busy and many member have weekend commitments that mess up club meeting dates. Attendance is down. 4. Financial....for sure. We all know thats a major player. theres a zillion reasons why the hobby is in decline and it isnt all down to auctions and prices of birds.

Are Auctions Killing Our Hobby
Auctions are necessary. A great many of the birds at auctions are flown in from various states and breeders not normally accessible by most people. Some breeders only sell to auctions too. Many of these breeders are not just down the road and available for a home visit. The "big money boys" at the auctions drive the prices up of course as the top birds command a following and they fight over owning the best. Yes......there are still $30 birds to be had locally and even some in the bigger auctions too. But its supply and demand that drives prices up. Its the competitive nature of man that drives prices up too. So, its called a HOBBY but is it an affordable hobby ? I think it becomes an affordable hobby when your own birds produced, and often from the higher price birds you bought, are breeding, then produce enough saleable birds to cover the new ones you buy in. Sometimes this takes years. To get a good price for your culls these days you have to have a NAME and be doing extremely well on the show bench.

Are Auctions Killing Our Hobby
Good birds I could have once bought locally here in W.A. are on the whole being sent interstate now for auction money. Mostly all I can buy locally is the leftover rubbish...birds with issues. Theres a few here and there but not much. That forces me now to buy from interstate auctions if I am after new blood or better birds than I can get locally.

Our Other Birds
Four more of our baby Princesses went to a new home be handraised today. We have 8 babies left. We normally let our princesses raise their own babies but with moving soon we cant do that. Its BREEDING CENTRAL in Kens aviary right now. Four baby canaries fledged today. Another nest had another four in it but the parents abandoned them and began another nesting site. I was supplement feeding the canaries in their nest for the past two days but it became apparent today I had to bring the four babies inside to look after. So I am now handraising four baby canaries. and this afternoon when we went in to check all in the aviary we had to watch where we stepped as there was 8 new baby quails running all around too having just hatched this afternoon.

Dom Pied Baby
Definitely dom pied spangle and its a real nice chick too PS First photos didnt show it well enough
-
Fallows
Your babies look adorable..............you must be real happy with them. I got a Peter Thurn ( aka Chookbreeder ) fallow split for Nubbly when I went to the Western Suburbs auction a week ago ..............shes not too bad
-
Dom Pied Baby
Doesnt look like a dom pied spangle to me in that photo. Spangles have head spots or head patches too. Need photos of the rest of the bird. If you are basing the dom pied part on the head spot only.....thats not enough to go on as spangles have them too.

Shed Aviary
Ebay doesnt work like that JB. It wont stay at $70 for long and especially not with 8 more days to go.
