  1. I found this awesome company that do kitset aviaries and custom designs. They look like really good quality aviaries too. It is in New Zealand though, so I don't know if they can post internationally. But if they can ship to different parts of NZ I don't see why they can't to Aus or else where. here is the link: Millenium Aviaries
  2. I did that with Emmett. I bought him from a petstore that had their budgies in huge aviaries and then brought him home and put him in a small quarantine cage. He was fine. He was in their for 6 weeks too. Now he is in the big cage and he is doing well. In fact most pet-shops in New Zealand keep their budgies in aviaries when they are for sale. So all my budgies I bought were originally in large flight cages or aviaries and then put into small quarantine cages and then later moved to the main cage and none have ever had problems. Just a side note: We have a petshop that sells budgies "only as aviary budgies" you are not allowed to keep them in a cage. Weird. They are always the big english ones though. I don't agree with that. I have just never bought one cause I didn't want the petshop people to go off at me for buying one to stick in a cage. Although I almost bought a lovely violet clearflight pied english last year, but didn't because I was moving soon after and was in the middle of breeding my budgies.
  3. I have the same problem as you Bea. I remember posting about it way back. But what I do is I wet the gym but I don't wipe it as I find this is what takes the colour off. Just leave it to dry in the sun. And only attack it with water in the areas where there is poop stain on it. Otherwise wipe it over with a dry cloth or chamois, to get that dust off.
  4. Haha, you could make millet earrings. I know Bea made broccoli earrings for her boys. hehe. It worked a treat too.
  5. Eww. I just read that article and I can't believe it. I think the author somehow misunderstood or misquoted Mickey and Johnny's mum. I just don't understand how they can talk about her with her birdies out and playing and then say that budgies don't need to come out and play. I even think canaries should be allowed out for free flight time too (finches are a little too high strung though) and I let my mum's canaries out whenever I go home. They're a little hard to get back in the cage, but that's because they're not used to being let out.
  6. My female budgies do it too. They only started after they started breeding now. And they make it whenever they feel a bit amorous.
  7. I don't see how sedating her what stress her out at all. I had to have my budgie go under anaesthesia for X-rays and blood work up. She was fine. I thought the whole point of euthanasia was to end your animal friend's life painlessly. I don't like this vet of yours ORCA, I think you should go see another one.
  8. You can always find some really good cages on ebay. You should ask Elly, where she got hers from.
  9. That is a cool playgym. Yeah I've seen them over in Australia too. I know City pets in Brisbane sells them.
  10. Yeah, I could see my babies guts, it was very interesting. Birds have very thin skin which makes it way easier to see through than mammal skin. I guess their muscle layer wouldn't have developed too much at this stage either. And the sternum wouldn't have grown to cover its abdomen much yet either.
  11. Haha, It never seems to work out how you want. Like with my first clutch of babies I was hoping for at least 4 and in a miriad of different colours. What did I get? 3 babies and all exactly the same colour, exceptone was cinnamon. And out of the 8 babies that I bred I ended up with 4 yellowface type 2 spangles that are all basically the same colour, they were all cobalt. (I actually ended up with 6 yf 2 spangles but the other two are opalines and one is a violet). Such is the way of nature, completely unpredictable and teasing.

As I stated in my previous post dark green leafy vegetables are good for calcium. So spinach is a good one. You can buy cuttlefish bone and calcium iodine bells too.

Very nice. You seem to have the same problem as me, I can't take good pictures due to my lack of photography equipment.
  14. I have a problem, I'm getting attached to Robbie. I was originally going to sell him, like I am with Albert, but over time, he has proved, what a special little gentleman he is. If I am going to sell him, he would have to go to someone special, and I would have to be able to see him regularly. Originally as a chick he was quite a timid little fellow, even though I handled him every day, he was quite scared and would always hide under the towel. When he became flighted, he was scared of my hand and didn't want to come out, even though younger sister Nikio was pretty game on coming out for a play. However as time has moved on he has become very tame and very friendly and loves nibbling my hand, and he does it ever so gently. He has the cutest face ever and he is the only boy budgie I have who flirts with my finger, all I have to do is bop his beak with my fingernail and his little head goes off bobbing around the place. And then when he plays with my hand and wrestles it, he flies off with his tail up and goes all happy dance and then flirts with all the girls in the cage, even his mum. wink.gif. He is so sweet and I share a relationship with him that I don't with the other boys. he loves climbing up my arm and eating my jumper. He has his father's face (extra cute(his father is Arkady)), his father's charms, well attitude to charming girls, his mother's good looks (mother is Isis) and he is a cutie. You see I think I have too many budgies. I was gonna sell Albert and Robbie to reduce my number to 10 budgies, but as the days go on, little Robbie, just makes me gooier and gooier. I couldn't imagine him as a lonely budgie in a smaller cage than he is in now, but I don't want to be selfish, because he is very special and deserves a close friend. Albert, I think could handle being in a smaller cage, the fatty! Fat Albert. (Laughing out loud) My cage is 165 cm tall, by 89cm wide by 89cm deep. That is okay for 11 budgies isn't it? They seem to do quite okay with 12 being in there. What do you guys think? As you can see, he has wormed his way into my heart. He probably knew I was going to sell him, so put on the charms and once I have decided, he will probably be a little brat. hehe

1.5 feet is quite a good width though, that's 45cm, which is pretty good.
  16. They do that for a little while, until they build up the confidence to come out.
  17. You'll just have to make them come out. hehe. Tell them they need to get exercise, or they'll get fat!.
  18. Often when you get a new budgie they go through this "escape at all costs" phase, where they try their darndest to escape. This wears off after awhile. When I first got Arkady he did flips around his seed dish perch. then discovered that he could open the seed dish and he escaped from his cage and flew over to the other budgies and spent the day on top of their cage. I still continued to quarintine because, what time he was out and on top of their cage he didn't have full contact with them and if he was carrying something he may not have been able to pass it on. Arkady going through his escape phase: Flipping around his seed dish perch:
  19. Awwe, you poor thing, you haven't had very much good luck lately have you? Oh well hopefully it will all improve from here.
  20. Your Lutino cock is so bright. he looks like the sun. He is gorgeous
  21. I would say hen too.
  22. Sailorwolf replied to a post in a topic in Cage Discussion
    Yep that sounds good.
  23. Either way, he/she is absolutely gorgeous and I would love to have a little budgie like him/her. It is a very strange pied, what kind of pied would you say it is (Nerwen Kaz, Daz, Feathers........etc)? Just about the wing clip, if he only has one wing clipped, when he flies he will be very off balance and will spiral and crash probably. I would get both his wings clipped to even him up, so he can steer somewhat should he fall. You can get an experienced vet or pet-shop staff member to do this. However they must be experienced, because if a blood feather is clipped they can bleed a lot.
  24. Anyway here are some new photos. Again with the webcam, but it shows the colours much better and also you can see Nikio this time. I don't know how Izzy got out of these ones, but he did. Look at Arkady in those last two pictures, they were taken seconds apart, nobody else has moved but him, and in each picture he is a blur. That tells you the nature of Arkady, he's always hyped up, like he's on caffeine or something. hehe If your wondering why there are not many toys in those pictures, it's because they thrown them on the ground, there are about 7 toys on the bottom of their cage right now, brats. Two of them they have decided to start eating. Hahahaha, Arkady and Isis were just mating, and then Alo comes along to see what all the fuss is about. Isis got all grumpy at him and started chasing after him, while Arkady was still on her back.
