I was just wondering if it was possible to tell the difference between a normal and melanistic spangle in an adult bird? I have checked out all the pictures I can find, but it wasn't really clear. Thanks for your help. SJW Link to comment

I know the melanistic spangle has a light coloured tail, and all the pictures I could see of normal spangles all seemed to have light coloured tails as well, so I guess I'm just getting a little confused.... Spangle once grown from a normal. another m.spangle (after moulting) Link to comment

A normal bird will have a dark tail and normally patterned (dark) wings, a regular spangle will have a light tail and light wings and a melanistic spangle will have a light tail and dark wings.
