Posted April 5, 200619 yr Have you ever seen 60 odd budgies moulting at the same time ??! It's a sight to behold. Feathers and poofiness in all directions Since all in the main aviary haven't had nesting boxes for a month they must have been bored. One decides time to moult and they all thought it was a good idea : : So, it's been raining feathers for about 2 weeks now. They are the most raggedy crew you have ever seen. It's a wonder I can get a decent photo out of any of them !! When is it likely to end ??
April 5, 200619 yr OH gosh (Laughing out loud). I believe it is up to each individual bird, Pretty has been going through a very very slow molt (since December) but that is because our weather is cool here. He still has some spikes on his head, but all his flight feathers have been replaced, he has tail feathers now, and his yellowish coloring is a bright white, but every time I see him fly or poof there goes more feathers.
April 6, 200619 yr At least the birds arent in your bedroom!!...so thats one think to look forward too! :hap: ..(Laughing out loud)...OMG..could you imagine if they were! I have 6 in mine...and ive had enough!..(Laughing out loud)..although i did get another one tonight :hap: :hap: how could us budgie lovers resist! Budgiebird...how do you clean the aviary, broom, or shopvac?....good luck dear! Kirby There is mostly garden in there so no problems there and there is water supply and paths that can be hosed down. You got to worry when fiance Ken (who is a Virgo and a neat freak ) gets in there and painstakingly washes each leaf of the frangipani tree cos its right under the rope perch and the leaves had droppings on them !!! :hap: :hap: :hap: Then he gets the vacuum in there for the excess seed mess.
April 6, 200619 yr I haven't seen 60 but i have seen 25 (all mine are moulting at the moment!) and Blinkie is like a feather bomb, it seems like everytime i collect up his beautiful feathers he just shakes and a bazillion more appear!!!
April 6, 200619 yr All my budgies are moulting at the moment. Initially I collected everysingle feather, but now, with all 4 moulting, I've given up.
April 6, 200619 yr Im surprised that my Patty has any feathers left at all, how can one budgie lose so many feathers and not look bald hehe. Her cage floor is literally covered in yellow feathers after one day, I change the covering and its the same the next day. One thing I can say she never looks scruffy when moulting my only bird that molts the most and looks perfect, but then she is a lady of course hehe.
April 6, 200619 yr My budgies are molting too. Seems that there is always one molting. And not one feather stays in the cage - even the big ones. They all fall on the floor. So.... I"m buying an i-robot roomba automatic vaccuum. It is on raincheck right now and I can't wait for it to get here. I've been dragging the central vac out daily to deal with the feathers.
April 6, 200619 yr my gang are molting too. the humbing birds are coming by and taking the fluffy down ones off the wires and using them in their nests! i'd love to see pics of 60 birds feathers though, (Laughing out loud)
April 7, 200619 yr i'd love to see pics of 60 birds feathers though, (Laughing out loud) me too ! l bet that it would be quite a sight :ausb:
April 7, 200619 yr :ausb: Shawna, please do tell me how your robot vacuum thingee works out, I have big pieces of paper all over the floor under the cages which I can roll up every few days as I can't vacuum with my fractured ribs and everything is a mess.(7 days until I get a housekeeper). To BB and the rest of you, too bad about the feathers, at least I have to deal with it on a smaller scale, good luck all.
April 7, 200619 yr You should keep all the feathers and make expensive budgie pillows out of them, hehehehe
April 7, 200619 yr Shawna, please do tell me how your robot vacuum thingee works out I will as soon as I get it. I guess its due in on the 11th. My sister has one and loves it. She doesn't have budgies - just 2 little kids that leave lots of crumbs around. Take care of yourself. Hope the ribs heal quickly.
