When Will He Grow His Feathers Back?

Featured Replies

Well, I clipped Izzy's wings before I joined this forum, that was sometime in september last year. It was the first time he had had his wings clipped and I desperately want him to grow his feathers back so that he and Arkady can fly around together. When do you think he will moult? When I clipped his wings, about 2-3 weeks later he had grown in one new flight feather, which I have left in and he still has.

Arkady is undergoing his first big moult and he looks like such a mess at the moment, the little nutter, I love him. Hey just curious, when budgies moult do their poos go runny? Cause that is what is happening with Arkady, he is as normal as ever, if not more mischievious, and I took him to the vet and the vet said he was okay. Any thoughts? Thanks guys :( :hap:

they will start coming in now during his molt, the old ones will fall out and the new ones will come in. I got Pretty at the end of September, he started his molt in January (it has been a long steady molt because of our climate), and now all his flight feathers are back

Lovey, Sylvester seems to have finished his molt, and he only grew back a couple of feathers. Are there various degrees of molt. Tweety is moulting now and her molt seems much more severe. She is losing a ton of feathers. Poor thing looks horrible. Sylvester looked a little rough above his cere but nothing like her. And I'm finding all kinds of different feathers from Tweety including tail, wing, long body, short body. With Sylvester it just seemed to be the small body feathers and a two clipped wing feathers.

that is a great question and I am sure the answer is yes. Pretty was more like your Slyvester, in fact he still has pin feathers on his head but it is almost done. You can see the top of his head is whiter and now poofer.

I have read that it can take a couple moults for them to grow all the way back in. I suppose I was lucky that he got them all back in on the first molt.

I find that with my budgies, some have really really big molt and get it all over done with in a short time, whereas some takes their time, and are constantly in molting mode!!! It took my Lemon girl about two big molt to get all her clipped flight back. it was a bout a year or so before she got them all back.

i clipped birdie last year sometime and his flights still arnt fully grown back. hes got a few clipped feathers that were full length when i clipped them are now grown out but grown out as in they still have the clip on the end of the as if i had just taken a half-1cm off the tip of a feather. im still waiting on all his flights to come back in bu tim thinking its going to take ages.

To my knowledge budgies dont get runny poop when they molt otherwise mine would have constant runs.

Have you changed anything in his diet and how long have the poops been runny?

Yes it was Izzy's first clip. I have clipped wings many times before and know how to do it properly.

Izzy is just growing some flight feathers now, He has two new ones in each wing. Do you think he will grow a complete set back?

I haven't changed anything in their diet.

 I have to add that i have actually noticed that Munchkins poops are not as firm now that he is moulting, althought he could just be drinking heaps of water in the cage before i uncover them of a morning  But since his has started moulting it has been different :D

I think moulting stresses them a little, so they get watery poop.

arrg, Izzy just broke one of his new flight feathers, he only has 2 in one wing and one in the other now!

What's your budgies' diet like? I have a good feeling that the slow molt has to do with a diet that is lacking. (Not your fault, and something fairly easy to correct).

Their poops shouldn't change during a molt. Once again, this could be a sign that their diet is lacking. It is a little stressful to molt but budgies on a proper diet have a much easier time of it.

Climate also plays a role but the fact that he started a molt and just hasn't finished and the fact that feathers are breaking leads me to believe it's a dietary issue.

I'd also keep a close eye on him for any sorts of illness as a prolonged molt can be a sign of this as well. But if he seems okay in all other respects, I'd focus on his diet for now.

His moult isn't prolonged, it only just started.

I feed him Kaytee fiesta. It has pellets and normal seed, different seed and dried carrots and apple.

I think his flight feather broke because he only had two on the one wing and thus that feather had no support from any other feathers, because all of the other feathers are clipped.

He's most likely not eating the pellets and dried carrots and apple. Does he get fresh foods along with this?

I give them carrot and bits of apple and Dandelion sometimes, but usually Arkady eats it all before anyone else can.

I thibnk it is more due to the fact he has his wings clipped, because he is 2 and a half and when he had full wings he never broke a feather. In fact this is the first time he has broken a feather.

I was so proud of him yesterday, he managed to fly 2 metres with only 2 feathers in one wing and one in the other. I was so proud I gave him a little millet just for that. ;)
