Posted March 4, 200619 yr Hi, My budgie has a swollen leg and his leg ring is very tight and cutting in! I can't get him to the vet til monday! how can i safely remove the leg ring without causing more pain or harm? Thanks
March 4, 200619 yr ouch! if the leg ring is cutting into the skin already it needs to be remved by an expert. i wouldnt dare risk doing it myself in case of causing permanent damage to the foot. if it is really bad it might also bleed if you take it off yourself and do more hamr than good. is there a 24 hour vet around.? this sounds very very very serious and needs urgent attention. your budgie could get septicemia or something from this if it isnt treated quickly. please let us know what happens Edited March 4, 200619 yr by pixie25
March 4, 200619 yr Some places are open 24 hours and on Sunday's, you just have to find one. Have a look at this thread and give a few a call. http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....ic=6326&hl=vets Maybe one of these The Braid Veterinary Hospital, 171 Mayfield Road, Edinburgh, EH9 3AZ, Tel :-0131 667 2478, Mr S.Girling, BVMS(Hons), MRCVS. Almond Veterinary Centre, 89 Colinton Road, Momingside, Edinburgh, Tel:- 0131 337 1471, Fax :-0131 313 4233, Ian Foster, BVetMed, MRCVS.
March 4, 200619 yr why is it these things only happen when all the places are closed. i find its the same with humans when the doctors are all shut.
March 4, 200619 yr why is it these things only happen when all the places are closed. i find its the same with humans when the doctors are all shut. Hi, Thanks for all replies but I live 20 miles form Edinburgh and it would take over an hour on the bus which seems really cruel to keep budgie in a box all that time. Is there not method of removing leg ring myself? :hap:
March 4, 200619 yr i really wouldnt do it yourself, the leg sounds like it is already in a really bad way, it is possible you would only make it worse. even if you did get it off yourself the budgie would still need urgent vet care to treat the infection, if left it could be fatal...
March 4, 200619 yr An hour in a box isn't as stressful as you'd think. Much better than trying to do this yourself and causing further damage. It's in your budgie's best interest to let someone experienced do it. Even if someone tells you how to do it yourself, they can't see exactly what it looks like and they aren't there to guide you. It's too risky, especially when you're not 100% of what you're doing or experienced with it.
March 5, 200619 yr Birds calm down when they are put in a dark box. Even the majestic bald eagle will settle when you cover it's eyes with a towel when performing procedures on it. Put the budgie in a box, making sure it has enough air holes and a comfortable towel or something to sit on, don't jostle the box too much and the bus ride should be okay. Good luck! :hap:
March 5, 200619 yr How are you going? Update? Yes try and get him to a vet right away because it must be pretty painful to saty there until monday.
